didja know that in your lifetime youve probably eaten like 20 spiders? (some odd statistic like that, maybe it was 10, or 3... something)

Thanks a lot, Smarty Pants. I'll sleep much better at night after reading your post.

I actually had an ugly brown spider crawl into bed with me a few nights ago. It wasn't a very pleasant experience. I felt his hairy legs brush across my hand than jumped out of bed, retreating to the living room sofa for the rest of the night. Once morning rolled around, I got up from the couch to get back in bed, knowing for sure it was gone. Boy was I stupid. I was in bed for like 30 whole minutes before it came out of hiding, where ever that was. Once again I jumped out of bed only to stand there watching in dismay as it went parading about my pillow. Disgusting creatures. I never did find it or kill it.

Anyway...time for bed. Goodnight.

Anyhow, I don't like spiders either... Mostly because I've been bitten a lot by very weak spiders... I don't think I've ever been bitten by anything really bad, though, like a brown recluse or black widow. For our Aussie friends, that's the worst us Yanks have to deal with... I feel sorry for Aussies... So many deadly spiders and snakes...

Strangely enough, the little spiders that get into your home and jump are the only ones (aside from daddy long legs) that don't terrify me. I have a friend who's an exterminator and chooses to go to spider seminars. He told me that those spiders are fairly common and generally harmless. Anything else though...and I turn into a terrified 3 year old.

Jumping spiders are fun. Put an unlit match head down in front of one and watch its eyes squint and home in .... and zip!

Fortunately, yes, they are totally harmless. They're also fun creatures to watch, and fearless -- they'll bring down insects double and triple their size.

I don't care to handle spiders, but I don't mind them. The only spiders I object to are ones in the bathroom. One landed on me while I was taking a shower (boy, that's a scene right out of Arachnophobia, isn't it?) and rapidly wound up on the bottom of a shampoo bottle. It was one of the regular brown house spiders, but still, I was not amused -- even if it had probably just accidentally lost its footing from the moisture.

I will kill any poisonous spiders I find, though. Black widows and desert recluses wind up flat if I encounter any. (Interesting fact: I am told by a taxonomist that California does -not- have brown recluses, which came as a surprise. He says that recluses do live here, but that they're usually desert recluses, which aren't the same species even though they look similar and have the same fiddleback.)

You people and all your spider talk lately...you've jinxed me.

When I came into work this morning, I noticed a large dark spot next to one of the pianos. When my boss came in this morning, I jokingly said "Those delivery boys. 23 years old and they STILL can't wipe their feet. Didn't their mama teach them anything?"

He then looked at me with a concerned look on his face and said "You don't know? They moved that piano yesterday and a brown recluse came out followed by a ton of baby spiders. That dark spot is there because they spent forever stamping the ground, trying to kill them."

He then put a can of bug spray specially formulated to kill spiders in the drawer beside me in the desk. He bought it just for me because he knows I'm terrified of the things.

So yes. I'm scared to death and man is it going to be a long day at work. I'm already terrified of spiders...but if you guys knew exactly what those nasty little brown recluses could do.... *shudder* Yeah...

I hate spiders :( *whimpers*

Isn't spider killing pesticide with neurotoxins or whatever else that makes spiders writhe in agony and soon diiie like the evil disgusting things they are wonderful? :)

My mom got bit once by what is probably this desert veroxicilli (or some fancy name but I think that it was veroxicilli) which is related to the brown recluse but is some kind of a light brown spider. (I live in So Cal, btw)

Thanks for the shower story Shoo. *goes off to take shower (exact smilie not found here)*

I hate spiders too, or at least I find them loathsome, vile, creepy, and disgusting.

I don't really mind spiders or bugs. I can even tolerate them crawling on me as long as they don't look too surly.

After I watched part of Arachnaphobia as a kid, I would imagine that there were spiders crawling on me all of the time while I was in bed. You girls probably don't know that a leg hair rubbing against the sheets feels exactly like a tarantula crawling on your leg ;) .

Most spiders here (Australia) are deadly and there's a lot of space for them to hide. I've seen many redback spiders and some black widows and they give me the creeps. White-tailed spiders aren't too safe either and come in huge groups when its hot weather. Strangely enough I can watch Eight Legged Freaks and Shelob's Lair part of Return of the King without freaking out. Must be because at that size its much harder for them to hide and sneak up on you! (lol)

Redbacks, ackthpth. When I was visiting my uncle in the Hunter Valley and had to use a dunny, you can bet I was checking the seat.

With commerce the way it is, I really wouldn't be surprised if brown recluses were in states that people claim they aren't in, you know?

I woke up this morning from a night of horrible nightmares, so I was already kinda wimpery... and right there in the bathroom this morning was a HUGE spider, almost as big as my thumb... Its mandibles were very visible and I could just imagine it biting me all too easily.

It was on the wall, so I felt safe enough taking a shower. When I searched for it again, it was gone. I'm not looking forward to going back in there to finish getting ready for work...

I know I posted in another thread that bugs hardly ever scare me... but when I'm already in a scared/sad/emotional in general state, that doesn't hold true.

recluses exist in small numbers here in CA. Never seen one.

We also have the Black Widdows. Friend of mine caught one in a jar and let it go without food. After a year in the jar, it was still alive o.O

Also tarantulas here... lots of tarantulas. They pretty much keep to the bush areas and leave people alone, but sometimes "tarantula season" rolls around and they come out. This is when they have somewhat of a greater need for water apparently, and so they seek it out in any place that they can. Found one in my dog's water bowl, dead from too much water. One cralled inside, going under a door to do so. I was like 4 at the time and it scared me silly. Even a friend of mine found one in a batch of cookie-dough when she left it out to use the restroom for a few moments.

I'm actually rather fond of spiders. They keep bugs away. When I was little, I had a plastic toy tarantula (Sp?) that I called "Tina the Tarantula". I loved that thing, but one day I lost it. Never did find it....
