White House Scandal

Postby termyt » Tue Jul 19, 2005 10:16 am

Scandal grips our nation today and I just have to ask you all a very serious question.

Take a look at this photo:

Image

Four of the women in the front row from Northwestern's national championship lacrosse team wore FLIP-FLOPS to the White House to meet the President of the United States of America.

I, personally, am mortified and eagerly await a calming statement from our chief executive.

How could any person do such a thing?

(Edit for clarification on the pole:
Option 1: It's OK to wear flip flops.
Option 2: It's not OK to be so informal.
Option 3: I have no opinion.)

It's kinda hard to see with such a low-res picture....

I, personally, wouldn't wear flip flops to the White House, but to each his own, I guess. :) Those girls look nicely dressed, though, so maybe the flip flops were fancy. ;)

If I went to meet the president I would wear what I want, probably no shoes at all, HA HA HA

Ever had to take your shoes off to go through security at an airport? More than likely the girls were advised beforehand about the best type of acceptable footwear to even get close to the cheif executive.

Where's the fun in that? I personally think it would be hilarious to be banned for something like that - as long as it wasn't permanent.

You got it. Thanks.

I think you're on to something, too, Locke. The right head utensils could have been applied to remove any controversy over footwear all together.

I wear sandals to church -- to sing on the worship team, no less. I've even taken my shoes OFF in church. I don't think the president deserves more respect than that. :)

lol EireWolf I was thinking of the same thing. I wear nice (and just normal) flipflops to church all the time, so they'd be good enough for the President. I'd assume the President didn't especially care either XD

who CARES? They are sandals... atleast they're not BAREFOOT! And They look totally presentable, who really cares about what other people think

Oh they are wearing sandals! They are such heathens! Make a pointless news article about how much they disrespected the president with their "sandals of defilement"

It makes no sense, who cares if others don't think if they are presentable or not...

and look at BUSH! He has LACROSS STICKS IN HIS HANDS! Why doesn't anyone say "He is defiling his presidential hands of supreme executive power with dirty sporting goods!"

Good point, Megan. I always used to wear butterfly socks with my marching uniform, primarily because we were supposed to wear plain white socks. And I wear weird socks (like rainbow colored toe-socks) with my work clothes instead of black socks. Sometimes it's fun to have at least a small bit of wardrobe rebellion, even if it's subtle.

Personally, I can't believe that they're actually devoting news time and concern to this with everything else going on in the world. :eyeroll: I keep waiting for someone to say it's all a big joke and no one really cares.

I'm sure they properly cleaned and sanitized the sticks before letting him touch them. I'm sure the President was also properly cleaned and sanitized, but he probably took care of that himself. ("Let me wash your hands for you, Mr. President.")

But what are flipflops?

*gasp* For shame!

They're like sandals, except instead of having an encasing going across your foot to secure it, there's a 3-pronged strap that starts between the big toe and the next, and forms a spilt y-shaped strap that connects to the platform on either side of the foot. They can be made out of plastic, foams, and other such things.

I think that the girls look cute --- keep in mind that these are sporty girls, not every girl likes to tromp around wearing heels.

Especially if you're tromping all over D.C. As a frequent traveler myself, (when I was younger), I can tell you that's not easy.

And W4J can't help it, he's foreign. Flip-flops seem to be sadly lacking in some countries. My German friend Elli totally stocked up before she went back because they don't have them over there. And she then promptly stuck her flip flop adorned feet out the car window while we were driving through the city. Crazy Germans. :P

Oh, you mean "thongs." Those are heaps popular here in Australia! They are basically one of our national icons (lol). So flip flops = thongs. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for rescuing me Yukinon! I thought thongs were invented here, just like ugg boots were.

They used to be known as thongs here, too, but people usually don't use that term anymore because it can mean a totally different item of clothing.

A whole lot of adults I know are totally against wearing flip flops to church. :\ I think it's mostly the stigma of it being beachwear, like a swimsuit or something.

Fashion trends change. Younger people generally seem to be far more accepting of challenging the fashion traditions, whether it be flip flops away from the pool or pajama pants at the store.

Although I've seen really old people in pajamas shopping, so I can't rule out any and all exceptions. :P

I think it's fine that they wore flip flops. They look nice and it's not like they put on yesterday's clothes and neglected to fix up their hair to meet the president. And like Doc said, the security was probably a lot easier to go through with minimal footwear.

And flip flops are far less expensive than heels most of the time. Yay for saving money.

Has someone been listening to Dennis Prager? :)

Whilst I suppose it's honest, and there are worse things in the world, I would have thought a nice pair of shoes more appropriate. I doubt practicality would be an issue - I mean a pair of strappy girls shoes are hardly more difficult to search/remove than the flip-flops.

If it was the girls' own choice, you have to wonder why they didn't feel more pressed to wear something special for the special occasion. Unless the idea of some clothing being nicer and more classy than other clothing has completely escaped them.

All I know is that the president made a special speech last night and he didn't even mention it! I was waiting for an explanation and all he did was introduce some guy. Like all of America needs a personal introduction to one of his friends.
