Is Power Rangers an insult to sentai?

Postby rocklobster » Tue Jul 19, 2005 1:05 pm

Power Rangers was adapted from sentai programs. Does this mean it's an insult to them or do you think they're more of a tribute?

Sentai is a program that is about a group of superheroes. G-Force/Gatchaman would be an example of Sentai.

That's like asking if Death Cab for Cutie is an insult to Indie Music. The answer depends on if you think going "mainstream" is helpful or hurtful to an industry.

Ooh, so philosophic and devoid of an answer.

Power Rangers are evil and threatten the world's sources of food by destroying the atmosphere with their wildly bright dye they use in their uniforms.

Power Rangers is an insult to everything...
The Straight and Narrow

I chose to walk the straight and narrow road, but one day I lost balance and fell off it. I had fallen onto some sharp rocks and injured myself. There were people passing by who would merely stare at me, and then keep walking. Thoughts of worthlessness entered into my mind, and as I chose to believe the lies, my wounds grew worse. I was so overcome with grief that I nearly gave up... but then a man walked up to me and stopped. Without saying a word, he started to wrap my wounds, he gave me some water, and then lifted me up and embraced me. He then whispered these words into my ear, "I love you my child." As he said those words I could feel all the worthlessness and despair fall away. He then held out his hands. They had huge holes in them. He then said, "Walk with me." I then took his hand and we walked together. Every now and then I would fall from the road, but no matter where I fell, he was always there to pick me up and tell me that He loved me.

They just took the footage from the Japanese shows of the fight/mecha scenes and added in American segments.

And Power Rangers is freaking cool.

I actually liked the first few seasons of Power Rangers. I liked it up until the "Alien Rangers" episodes, at which point it morphed (no pun intended) to Zeo Rangers, and I gave up then.

Even if I were to give the newer ones a chance, I have no clue what happened to Zordon, Alpha 5, or Zedd, so I wouldn't be able to enjoy it as much.

I don't really think you can insult such campy shows by being campy.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

I don't know if they were an insult, really. (It's been forever since I've seen them, though, so I can't make a good judgement...) but...nah, not an insult. They weren't the best thing for the genre, but they WERE part of a strange sort of invasion of Japanese material. First Power Rangers, then Sailor Moon, then Pokemon. *shrugs*

I used to like Power Rangers. I would still watch it today, incredibly corny as it is. *Azier's Favorite was Lost Galaxy*

But, no, I wouldn't say it is an insult. Most sentai shows are technically just as corny. Some just have better writing than others. I've always thought of PR as nothing more than a live-action sentai show.

Power Rangers is only an insult of your are too cool to laugh at ridiculous tv shows.

The show was good, but the toys were even better. Those zords were like transformers on steroids. Unfortunately my parents would never buy me one... :(

Dude... That was BRILLIANT!!!

Yeah power rangers was great when it first started. And then it got kinda weird when alpha went all... ya know... "yo yo yo!!" to suit modern slang. Then, right after Zeo, Power Rangers Crashed and Burned... Watching power rangers after Zeo (or even possibly while Zeo was on) was painful. Power Rangers will never be good EVER again (unless of course I become the writer. Then it will once again be awesome).

But, if what people say are true and sentai is just as corny, then no, it's not an insult to sentai.
had enough.

Yup. Then he was the White Ranger. Then the Red Zeo Ranger. And apparently, he's the Black Dino Ranger.

That dude just can't stay away from that series, huh? Just as well, he was my favorite character anyway.
