And I thought this one was bad...

My friend recently purchased a new computer, and as he knows I like tech, he gave me the old one. All I've really managed to do successfully is void the warranty on one computer, a cdrom and my PS2, but hey, if I can get it running, it's a free PC.

Anyway, it has a 20 gig hard drive which he know works, and a Pentium 3 4xx MHz chip with 160 MB of RAM. As it is now (or maybe with a bit more RAM), is it possible/feasible to turn it into a file server? This is, naturally assuming that it works.

Thoughts?

Sure. Windows or Linux?

And make sure it has ethernet capability - onboard or on an expansion card, it doesn't really matter too much. (An expansion card might set you back all of $10)

Linux, claro. Which brings up another set up problems, but we'll get there when we get there.

Internet server, or just your own private server for your home network or something?

For the home network. I don't know enough try one for the Internet.

Actually, "file server" may not be the correct term for what I want to do. I'd like to set it up so that the other computers backup their documents/pictures to the one I just got.

Your other systems are Windows or Linux?

If they're Windows systems, you're looking at setting up a samba share, and then you could use something like, say, difolders to automatically copy everything from your documents folder to the samba share. (or just a batch file or something.)

Well, that computer should be enough, with the right OS and programs. 20GB though, that's pretty small. Oh well.

Personally, I trust FTP, because it works.

From the top:

Kali: It will be a mixture of both, with my computer Linux and the family's dual. Difolders looks interesting.

Lorentz: I'm lazy, and don't know how FTP works yet. I may look into it.

Volt: Yeah, I'm going to try to keep everything opaque to the world at large. Interestingly, in links if you just press enter when prompted for a URL, it takes you to your home folder.
