Non Japanese anime ideas

Postby rocklobster » Sat Jul 16, 2005 8:10 am

What non-Japanese properties would rule as an anime? I thought of this after seeing the Anime Insider's "If It Were Anime" section. I think the following would be great:
A-Team
Quantum Leap
Elfquest
Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain
Bone (the Jeff Smith comic)

Star Trek! :thumb:
Star Trek would make an excellent property to turn into an anime series.
For one thing it already has a worldwide following so that there would be
no problems with getting people interested in an anime series. For another
reason it would give the franchise a refreshing look.
My idea would be to take the Marvel Comics series Early Voyages and
turn them into an anime series. :thumb:

Not to be nitpicky, but I wouldn't. Tintin and anime is too far removed in my mind for it to even be a good idea (even if Hergé was inspired by some early Japanese drawings that would lead to manga). I can't really say why I dislike the idea. I'll have to think some more about it.

Bone (the Jeff Smith comic)

Alot of these seem... wierd, but Bone and Star Trek could work. Especially Bone. If you haven't read this amazing tale, DO SO NOW!!!

Batman and Spiderman. Think about it. You could do some awesome arcs with all the unique villains each one contains.

Going with the original pilot version, eh? I liked Spock better as the second in command, myself. He seemed a little apprehensive in the original pilot.

Whoa, hardcore Trekker material! Right on!

I'd love to see Tron done as an anime, or maybe The Black Hole (another of the "No really, we can do grown-up stuff!" movies Disney did in the early '80s)

Wizard's Anime Insider is always coming up with anime ideas for non anime programs. They did a Dukes Of Hazzard as a anime idea except all the characters have Japanese names and drive a suped up Japanese car with a Rebel flag on the roof.
What about non anime movies? Jaws?

Jaws wouldn't work. The shark would only die once. There'd be no reason for the sequels.

You got wonder why there were sequels when the shark in the first one die and others came swiming along and doing what the first one did.
Something a foot there. Maybe aliens were behind the shark attacks. Capture shark, program to attack and attack and be smarter than humans.

True.

Star Trek would be a no-no; It's just too American. Is there any anime character at all similair to Kirk? I don't think so. The whole Federation is based on America anyway. Japan just can't pull off that impact.

Quantam Leap would be cool, except it would probably have a ton of sex in it. Even more then the original.

A Shogun anime would be neat, but the Japanese would probably rewrite most of it to make them look less barbaric.

Battlestar Galactica might do OK, but I'm not sure. Both the original and the remake are just so dang good.

Xanth. Plain and simple. Of course it would have a ton of sex and nudity in it. Maybe the Incarnations of Immortality instead?

I agree with Tintin.

Hm, the War of the Worlds movie might be good.

And of course Batman, with a sort of Hellsing-style to it.

I saw that one. This month, they did a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory anime version. Willy Wonka looks freakin' scary man!

The latest Anime Insider has a Battlestar Galactica idea that looks an awful lot like Star Blazers. I even saw Captain Herlock in there!

How about this one even thou I think it was done has a old school anime movie years back. The Thunderbirds. With all the use of computer animation for anime today it would work for some of the different ideas.
I have heard that Captain Scarlet would be done in computer animation.

Dirk Gently!!!!! That would be a cool anime. You know, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and Long Dark Teatime of the Soul by Douglas Adams. Even though it's a major culture gap, I can really see it as anime.

Anyone read any of Neal Stephenson's novels? (The Diamond Age and Snow Crash are two of them) They practically ARE anime, just novel form. Very cyberpunk style. Great anime material!

I came up with someother ideas for either anime or manga from TV or movies.
Airwolf
Police Academy
Smokey and the Bandit
Police Chopper One
Seaquest (Think there maybe some new anime coming out close to this TV show)
How about some hospital type anime like ER or Scrubs

That'd be hilarious! Of course it would be set in Japan and not Britain, but it would be funny. "Oh, it's just the horse in my bathroom."

Some Phillip K. **** short stories would be cool. What about Dean Koontz?

Stargate! It has a universal apeal, and couldn't be botched, no matter who did the animation. It would be uber cool. The fighting, strategy, comradery, the whole consept is well developed so there would only need be a bit of research easily found online, and the gate would look awesome in anime.

Why would they do that? they didn't censor Lone Wolf and Cub, so I don't think they'd find Shogun too bad.

sherlock Holmes--he's universal. And someone MUST replace Dic's "sherlock holmes in the 22nd century".

the BIBLE. As long as they don't get kooky with it.

My stuff. hahahah.

A Clockwork Orange. For some reason as I read this book I saw it as an anime. I dunno.

The classic novels--Frankenstein, War of the Worlds, Les Miserables, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Three Musketeers, etc.

The Dragonlance novels.

"The Black Hole," a live action 2001 knock off. Also the first DIsney movie to get a PG rating.

Given anime's track record with that particular source?

The Black Cauldron was the one Disney did that was adapted from the Chronicles of Prydain. But they kind of screwed up here. Gurgi shouldn't have been the one to dive in the cauldron. You like him too much! And then they had to go and force a typical happily ever after ending on top of it. That's why I think anime would've done a better job with it. They wouldn't be too scared to stick to the original idea of killing off Prince Ellidyr and making you like him at the last minute when you were hating him before that. BTW, if none of you out there have read the The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander, you should! Here are the five books in the series:
  1. The Book of Three
  2. The Black Cauldron
  3. The Castle of Llyr
  4. Taran Wanderer
  5. The High King
