Laptop-standby problems

Postby Namelessknight » Mon Jul 11, 2005 2:23 pm

I have a compaq laptop and this past weekend it has started acting rather odd. No problems before and nothing weird occured to cause it[that I am aware of anyway]
So-whenever I put it in standby[close the top usually], it won't come out of it and I have to hard reboot by holding the power button down.

Second, it won't shutdown\restart using the software controls, ie, startmenu, shutdown, etc. it just hangs at the "windows is shutting down" and the fan runs, but the harddrive isn't running. Have to hold the power button down to shut it down.

So any clues? I've done the desultory scandisk and defrag, ran Adaware, and have Norton05 security installed.

Thanks...

Mine crashes if it goes into standby. I've cut down the button dealie that sends it into standby when the lid is down. (standby isn't a big deal for me)

My mother's laptop, though, had the same "hang during shutdown" issue that you describe. I'll have to ask her if it still does that.

Just checked the shutdown procedure and noticed something odd[again]. When the screen goes to the "windows is shutting down" window, my wireless card turns off and my pointer disappears, so it is like my comp did shut down, but it actually didn't.

My Dell laptop looses the mouse if you put it in stand by. Always has.

Recently, I've had similar issues, too. I'm thinking it's time to rebuild the laptop - or at least reload the OS.

Reloading the OS, that is something I am considering, but as a last resort. I have so much stuff I'd have to re-install. Argh....
