What are OVAs exactly and what does OVA stand for?

It stands for Original Video Animation. I believe it is defined as a series of anime episodes that was not intended for a television broadcast. I could be wrong however.

He has it right.

OVA or OAV means this.

Original Video Animation. A sort of anime miniseries produced to be released directly to video.

The word is used both to refer to individual episodes and the series as a whole. Series are usually 4 to 8 parts, each one 30 to 45 minutes long. Frequently released in the US on volumes containing two or more OVAs. Also called OAV, though OVA is more commonly used; both are correct, and OAV is the preferred term at this site.

I usually perfer OVA's because they tend to have less filler episodes and more character development. Plus, the animation is usually a bit better too. Kind of a random thought.... :P

Ok... This doesn't really much to do with answering the question, but I got a kik out of it so maybe yall will too...

once my friend and I were in Waldenbooks buying manga and our Civics teacher Coach Moore came in and we went over to talk to him.

While we were talking to him he just kinda took the manga we were holding out of our hands and was flipping through it. Eventually he nodded and said, "oh so this is that uh.... that uh.... uhm...."

I was about to supply him with the word 'manga' but he beat me to it by finishing his sentence with: "Oriental Adventures....."

Kami (myfriend) looked and me and said, "o_o Yeito..."
me: "eh?"
Kami: "OAV = Oriental Adventure Videos!!!"

We cracked up bigtime. It was great. Hilarious to us at the time. Needless to say Coach Moore just kinda stared at us with a bewildered look on his face. ^^;

This post just made me think of that is all.. sorry -_-;
