Pop/Punk jumping the shark?

Postby Zilch » Wed Jun 29, 2005 9:55 am

It seems like every time I flip on the radio, a new pop/punk song is playing...and it sounds just like all the other pop/punk songs I've heard in the last few years. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like the genre, I just don't think that anything more could be added to it. Your thoughts?

I agree with you. Pop punk's time is over. We need something new and better. To be honest, I never really liked pop punk that much in the first place. Lol, I always thought "pop punk" was a bit of an oxymoron.

I loathe pop punk... I could make a CD with Greenday, Atrayu, Blink 182, Yellowcard, and Simple Plan on it and I bet to someone who had never heard their songs they would think they all came from the same artist. Same chords, same vocal styles, same drumbeats, same lyrics, same everything enough please...I hope the "genre" dies and is buried forever.

You forgot Good Charlotte..... :P

Good point though. pop punk is just watered-down punk for pre-teens (apologies to any fans of the above bands who are older lol)

Yeah, pop punk is good. But it could use some originality though.

I didn't think that Atreyu was pop punk. They sounded pretty hardcore to me when I heard them.

I absolutely abhor pop/punk. I will admit that I do like Green Day though.

I don't even listen to the radio anymore because I can't tell the difference between any of the bands, and most of the lead singers from the bands have the same pre-pubescent squeaky voice, which I find rather obnoxious.

I stopped listening to the radio after My Chemical Romance(UTTER CRAP) beat Mae in this people's choice thing. It was so depressing.

I love music from the 80s though, and Indie and Alternative Rock like Ash and Third Eye Blind.

I stopped listening to the radio LONG before pop punk XD But it sure hasn't given me any incentive to start listening again, that's for sure. I prefer bands like Coheed and Cambria or mewithoutYou to this "music" they play on the radio.

Oh, I like Green Day's older stuff. The new stuff...well...>.<

Pop Punk has always been doomed to die from the start. A genre of music can't withstand time by being supported by cookie-cut bands that put no effort in thier music.

But hey, I don't listen to it so I personally don't care...let kids rot by their "emotional and sincere" lyrics.

I like pop punk/power pop, but it is a very limited genre. If you move too far off the three chords and nasal vocals, the music becomes something completely different. Same thing happened to death metal. The difference is there wern't any Top 40 death metal bands, and there are dozens of Top 40 pop punk bands. A couple of bands hit it big playing the music that others before them played, and now every Tom, **** and Harry wants to play pop punk so they can sell a million records. The phase will end soon, and then only the true bands will remain.

You have to think, though, that there realy is not much real punk left. Old punk was alot closer to hardcore. Mostly everything now like Blink and stuff is Pop/Punk. Atreyu is most definately NOT pop/punk. Don't know where that came from; their Post-Hardcore. And i can't stand bands like Good Charlotte and Simple Plan and stuff. The only band that i listen to that could be defined as such is Relient K. Yeah thats about it.(you guys who listen to some of these bands don't take it personal, this is my opinion)

There are some scattered old school punk bands out there. Officer Negative comes immediatly to mind, although I think they broke up. 7-10 Split is another one. I still see new issues of Maximum Rock and Roll and Punk Planet on the newsstands, so there must some real punks left.

BTW, I guess I'll have to write "every Tom, Richard, and Harry" from now on. :)

I'm a fan of pop punk but certian bands are way overplayed and annoying...I like the good ole pop punk bands like MxPx, The Undecided, NogginTaboggan and the like.

Thier are some very talented hardcore bands such as Between the Buried and Me but it is starting to sound alot of the same as more and more bands want to be hardcore only to sound all alike.

But music is like that save for the stand out individuals who adds new flavor to that genre.
