Worrying about the future...

Postby smooth_operator » Mon Jun 27, 2005 7:28 pm

Hi guys. :)

I was just wondering if some of you have ever experienced anxiety about the future? To wonder if you'll do well on a test, to wonder if you make it through an audition, or wonder if your loved one makes it from surgury, etc. At the moment of my life right now, I am constantly worrying about what's going to happen about such things - Playing events over in my head and imagining the different outcomes. Basically I ask myself a lot of "what if" questions.

It stinks to worry like this and I was wondering how you guys cope with such worry. Bible verses would be very helpful as well.

Everyone has wonders and fears about the future, the key is putting them in God's hands and letting Him handle it, and having faith He will.
"For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace." - Isaiah 9:6

*sigh* Totally dealing with this right now as well. Too much upcoming on the mind(college, relationships, possible family issues, church issues, etc) and plus i'm stupid about dwelling on past things. so yeah...

There are some great verses for ya though and this is one of my favourites.

God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that ALL things at ALL times, having ALL that you need, you will abound in every good work." -- 2 Corinth 9:8

Hope things work out well for ya and you can have some peace of mind. :) take care.

All the time. It comes with the territory for me. My personality is the take-charge, gung-ho leader who bears the brunt of the project on her shoulders. I constantly worry and fret about the future...but you know what? It's really unhealthy. It's bad physically, and it's bad spiritually. It nurtures a deep, innate distrust of God.

Think of it like this. Do you trust God to be who He says? If you do, then you believe He loves you more than anyone else in the whole world and will ONLY give you the absolute best. I always like to think of the verse in Matthew where Jesus tenderly says, "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows!"

Jesus also commands us not to worry: ""Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear....Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life...For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

It's fine to be excited about your future, but don't let yourself get stressed out or anxious about it.

i guess im the opposite... i take everything by stride... and it can be good, and it can also be bad. While everyone is worrying over SATs and College, im just "meh" *sips iced tea* and stuff....

Yeah, I know how you feel. It's pretty common, at least in my life.

1 Peter 5:7
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Ecclesiastes 11:10
So then, banish anxiety from your heart and cast off the troubles of your body, for youth and vigor are meaningless.

Psalm 94:19
When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.

try not to worry over it, in the Bible it says do not worry about tomorrow.....
you shouldn't worry over what you can't change, only God has control over it and you have to put your trust in Him ^^

Thanks guys for the advice and the references!

The thing is, it's hard not to think about what's going to happen the next day. There are times when I put my trust in God and hope for the best to happen. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't and when it doesn't, my faith starts to fall. I guess that's why I am over-anxious now about future events because I know that sometimes God will somehow not be there for me.

So I can see it's probably my faith that needs to be worked out on and not something I can control. The more I try to control something myself, the more it is not going to happen...
