Why do peaple fear death?

This question has made me wonder for awhile and then I woke up one morning and then I though "Do peaple fear death because they doubt there going to where they thought they were gonna go?" I don't really know if it's true or not, but I'd like peaples opinions on this.

I think people fear death for one of many reason:
1) They have no control over it- it's inevitable.
2) perhaps some fear that the things they believed in life may be wrong, and then get filled with doubt.
3) people fear what may await them after life- consequence for their sins... like hell.

or maybe
4) guilt for they way they have lived their life

My view is that death is merly another step in the life of the beliver. It is the finale step of the eartly life but the first step of the heavenly life. There we will lose this old sinful flesh and be made new to live forever in Heaven. I look forward to heave and this is why...

because people don't want their loved ones to be without them... like a person's family... or someone has stuff they havent done in life that they wanted to do, like get married, go to another country, etc

Even as a Christian, when I was younger I was always hesitant about my own death. I was partly scared that I wasn't a good enough Christian and I was still going to hell, and I was partly reluctant to leave life yet....there was so much to do! To get married and to have a family and to serve the Lord...I couldn't leave yet!

Now I'm a little older and a little roughened by the winds of life. I'm NOT clinging so tightly to the pleasures of this world...and yet, I still have a lot of things I would prefer to accomplish before leaving life. But, it's become my heart now to say "Jesus, I'd really like to experience a lot of things in my life, but if you want me to come home, that's ok. In fact, that's better. Because you are God, and I am not. So whatever your will for my life, Lord, I surrender to it."

I think some people are afraid of what will happen to them when they die. But even more, I think, aren't so much afraid of death, but they're afraid of dying. Death is the easy part when it's all over. IMHO, what scares people is the thought of dying painfully.

Reminds me of a joke once told by Jerry Seinfeld.

The number one fear in America is speaking in front of a crowd while the number two fear is death. Number Two? That means if you're at a funeral then you'd rather be in the casket than giving the eulogy.

I was scared for along time that maybe the worldy view of death was true. That you will basicly be in a "sleep mode" forever. And never dream. And I don't know about anyone else, but I think that is pretty scary. I got over that fear though.

Oh yes, that is pretty scary. I don't know how such a thought can give some people comfort.

There's a belief that is held by some Christians (including my former pastor) that deep down in every man, women's, and child's soul that God exisits. I can't remember what it's called right now but maybe later. Anyway, if every man does believe God exists then what must they think of their final end? Especially if Christians have done their duty and warned the world of the judgement?

I'm perpretually terrified of that version of "heaven". We do know that in Heaven we'll sing praises to God, but I'm 100% positive it won't be like that.

I think most people fear death because of the pain or suffering involved, though I'm sure doubt about where one would end up also plays a role.

As for me, fear of death really holds no sway over me. I don't doubt where I'm going anymore, and if I go painfully I have the promise of going to the Lord when it's all over. I'm very very frightened of leaving my loved ones behind, though. T_T

As has already been said, I think that people fear the experience of dying much more than what follows death. This is especially true for Christians, who have some measure of certainty in the existence of something better after death.

Just like with any major change in life, some degree of anxiety is inevitable in death. Just imagine the nervousness you would feel when starting a new job, moving to a new house, starting school, or getting married taken to another level.

Even if there is an afterlife, death is an end in a very real sense. You will not be getting up in the morning. You will not go about your day as any other, because you will never see it. Instead, you will be facing whatever comes after this life. God or not, that is enough to scare anybody.

"Fear of heaven..." I haven't read Jean Paul Sartre's (who is an atheist, in case you didn't know) No Exit, which is described as a tale about heaven which is actually more like hell. "Hell is other people," they say. Actually that play... no, it's not. I sold all my Humanities books. Shoot.

Anyway, the topic at hand. Death is scary because billions of people have died yet not one of them can tell you what it's like--except One, though many scholars spend their lives trying to discredit Him.

from my own experiences with fears of death...

you feel like you're life isn't your own (even though it really isn't)
you fear what you don't know...I.E. you don't really know what happens when you die...how it feels etc so you fear it...
some people don't want to give up all they have in life...
you fear where you're going i.e. heaven or hell...
you fear that you'll just disappear instead of actually "going somewhere"...

these are a few things I struggled with for some time...that is, of course, jsut what i struggled with, but i would wager to say some people ahve similar thoughts...

Actually what surprises me is not that people,even Christians,are scared of dying,rather what surprises me is that there are so many non-Believers(atheists,etc.)who aren't afraid of dying.

Myself it's more dread like going to the doctor than anything else.

People fear death because it is unnatural. Death is not supposed to exist and inside each of us we know that. Eternity is set in our hearts, so the concept of life ending is so foreign to our hearts that we fear it.

Analyse everything people fear, you will see they're all a result fo the curse.

death, pain, misery, anguish. All unnatural things.

Since I am Taoist I do not fear death, but more welcome it, knowing its just another experiance of life, of being. Birth is not the begining and death is not the end. The persons soul never dies, it is eternal.

I'm not "afraid" of death, and I know alot of people who aren't, but if you think about it, when you die, you most likely won't be able to say gobye to your friends or the people you love, or be able to talk with them. . . allthough, we REALLY won't be thinking about that when we're in heaven XD but still, down here, I'd still want to have as long as I can to be able to talk to my friends and fullfill my calling that the Lord's put on my heart

I not entirely sure...even in the case of the non-religious. Sure, some might fear the end of their existence, but I figure prior to birth, I didn't exist for goodness knows how many eons. The non-existance and darkness before birth wasn't too bad, so I figure that the idea of facing something like that after death wouldn't be too bad. You wouldn't know any better.

Thankfully we have something to hope for though.

Personally, I think I mostly fear waking up a 90-year-old on death's doopstep, alone and feeling like I've totally wasted my time on earth. That and the actual feeling of death, like, how long does it take to die? And what does it feel like when your body shuts down? Ei, now I'm freakin' myself out.
