Holding water buckets as punishment

Postby rocklobster » Tue Jun 07, 2005 2:03 pm

Does anyone know why Japanese kids have to stand out in the hall holding water buckets when they're being punished? It doesn't really seem that punitive to me. (As opposed to writing on the board or detention)

Try holding a water bucket for 3 hours and see how fun that is. I can't even carry a grocery bag for 15 minutes.

And if they spill any, they're dead.

Writing on the board and detention is mental punishment, as opposed to that.

You say, "I'll see you and your water bucket outside of this class tommorrow. I figure 8 hours should cover your particular offense."
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Holding water buckets are also used as punishment in boot camp or I think they still use that as punishment.

A perfect example of this would be from Azumanga Daioh. When Tomo was being punished, she was only able to last 15 minutes when she spilled the water bucket. As energetic as she is, I doubt anyone else can stand such physical torment for that long.

Love is that feeling you get when a girl looks at you and it feels like your driving a car at high speeds and experience a sudden drop. You know what i mean? That sudden sinking feeling you get in your stomach? Yeah, that's love. Leave's you speechless everytime.

It's a punishment not used anymore in Japan. I understand it was banned. It still shows up in anime/manga-- usually as a cliche.

5 gallons of water is not fun to carry. But it does build strong muscles.

Yeah, even Tomo in Azumanga mentions that it is a punishment that isn't dished out anymore.

There's a blast from the past. Welcome back, Michael. Now, I suppose Zip has to share the computer again.

I'm thinking anyone who's thinking this is an easy punishment has never had to stand around holding something heavy before. After about five minutes, you'll think your are is about to fall off.
