Yikes! A Stoplight Changer?

Postby Mithrandir » Thu Nov 06, 2003 10:38 am

An interesting article was posted to /. about a (semi-cheep) device that can instantly switch stoplights to be green in your direction. It's a little iffy about how/where it will work, but it could be rather scary if EVERYONE had one.

Hey that would come in handy, but not for 300 to 500 dollars.

People who write below their abilities in order to crank out tons of books and make a buck. Especially Christian authors who do that. Outsiders judge us for it, and make fun of us for it, and it makes Jesus look bad. We of all artists on earth should be the most concerned with doing our best possible work at all times. We of all people should write with all our hearts, as if writing for the Lord and not for men.

I can't see it being legal for long. In any event, I can think of a couple of ways that the authorities can beat the device (mainly by changing the transmitted signal and adding some extra logic to the reciever)
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

Yeah, but the mod chip for the PSII isn't legal either...

How much would it cost us in tax dollars for this to happen? I'm thinkin' one billion dollars.

Well I can't say for sure in other places, since i live in the middle of technology here in silicon valley, but a lot of the traffic lights can be controlled by amblulances going by. I do believe and know of such "remote light switchers" in these cases....

Yeah, Silence is right. They deffinately use them around here. There's a fire dept right down the road from my place, and I've watched the light go from Green to Red instantly while they go barreling through. It's a bit unnerving. But since they have siren's blaring the whole time, I can't really say it's a hazard.

some of them have light sensors that detect the flashing lights of the emergency vehicles, some of them have RF switches... A lot of lights will turn green just by flashing your lights, like where I used to live... my friend did it all the time...

It should probably be pointed out that this is, point of fact, highly illegal. I wonder if it could fall under the:

"...subverting the legal system through exploiting security flaws in government technology"

laws...?
