Well, the majority of CAA'ers are from the United States of America. But I'm curious - from what countries are those who are not from the US? Just curious.

While we're at it Pommie, it is what the Australian settlers called the British deported prisoners, because they were abbreviated as P.O.M.E. - Prisoners of Mother England.

I am in the small N of Z -New Zealand. In fact, I have the strange feeling CA (CreatureArt) and I are the only kiwi ppl here. *shrugs* Ah well, we can always hang with the Aussies, any Pacific Islanders (are there any here?), South Africans and other members of the Southern Hemisphere.

For your own benefit Jeikobu, don't utter such a question outside the US... ever, because the rest of the world will point to your innocent question and exclaim loudly that US citizens 'are' in fact, ignorant and self-centred and think the whole world revolves around them.

It is an honest mistake as I think it is pretty stupid to name a region partitioned by foreigners after the southernmost point of another geographical construct devised by said foreigners. It is generally unfair to base your opinion of an entire country on one person (and you KNOW who I'm talking about). The US is not the hub of ignorance, stupidity and ineptitude as you bitter Commonwealthers would like to believe. If you don't believe me, watch the aftermath of a typical UK soccer--AHEM--football game for but one example.

You know, if no one has ever heard of my country before or got the facts mixed up, I won't think badly of them. It's not like my knowledge in geography is -that- great either. I just asked Shatterheart the other day in the chatroom, "Say, is Maine next to the coast?" when everyone was talking about east vs west coast and the best seafood. He just said, "Yes, it is." Now, wasn't that patient and polite of him?

Erm....South Africa. The Republic of South Africa, if that helps. As for it being cool, its only that way in the winter.

Well, the region we live in is called Southern Africa so its easy to get confused. Other countries in SOuthern Africa is Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia. But we're the only country that holds the name of the region. Its easy to confuse all this with East or West Africa being a regional name, I suppose. Geography is such a complicated subject - I was never good with it.

Anyway, I hope this map helps clear up the confusion and please, no picking on people for making honest mistakes.

You kinda got the definition right, but kinda not at the same time If we went by that description, America would be a Commonwealth country. Basically, 'Commonwealth' is for the countries that still recognise the Queen as the Head of ... er... State I think it is, but is represented by a Governor General or equivalent.

I'm from the kingdom of ohio, to quote a Siamese person in "The King and I," so I'm not a non-US member. We've never tried to form our own country like those South of the Mason-Dixon, so I don't really qualify as a "Non-US member" in any sense.

However, I thought I might be able to lend my massive storehouse of trivial knowledge to help define what a "commonwealth" is. What good would being a repository for useless information be if I couldn't take an opportunity like this to share it?

A commonwealth is a society organized by citizens for the common good of the people. The people of the commonwealth elect their own leaders, so it’s basically synonymous with the word “republic."

The term itself probably comes from early 17th century England describing the period after Charles I was deposed and England entered a brief period without a ruling monarch.

Another definition for commonwealth is an organization of autonomous states that are united in allegiance to a central power but are not subordinate to it or to one another (aka the United Nations).

Fun fact: One could say that there are only 46 states in the United States because four states (Massachusetts, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Virginia) actually consider themselves commonwealths. Of course, that would be splitting hairs to say the least, since all states are commonwealths. Puerto Rica, a territory of the United States, also calls itself a commonwealth.
