Naming your child

Talk about anything in here.

Postby LorentzForce » Fri May 20, 2005 9:58 am

Remember folks, different names change people. Completely. Maybe not as much in English-speaking countries that use Christian names (like Paul, David, James, etc etc), but it does have a lot of impact in Asian countries where names can be varied a lot.

So think about that when you name your kids in Japanese or otherwise.

qv X B is right. In Eastern countries, especially during Biblical times, one's name was one's life. Why do you think so many people in the Bible had their names changed during an important life change (Abram/Abraham, Jacob/Israel, Esau/Edom, Simon/Peter, Saul/Paul)?

I've used most of my favorite names on characters already. ;_; they are:

Adrian
Rowan
Julian - I used this for a girl, as opposed to spelling it "Julienne", since they're pronounced pretty much the same way anyway...
Ivy
Lilian
Arian - "AH-ri-an", not "AIR-i-an" as in the Aryans -_-;
Aidan - I say it "EYE-dan" instead of "AY-dan"
Stephen - "Stefan" instead of "Steven"...how did "ph" come to be "v"? o_o
Tobias
Ardan
Alexander

My favorite name out of all those is probably Arian, but I don't think I would ever use it for my own child, because that would just be too weird. And as you can see, I'm partial to names that end in "-an" or "-en". o_o I also like Aidan, but that character is an evil, evil man...>.<

A few names I really like that I haven't really used yet are:

Nathaniel
Matthew
Airen - sounds like "Aaron"
Kian - sounds like "Keyan"
Ian
Uriah
Josiah
Symon - I'd never use this though because it was the name of someone I used to know and we didn't exactly part on good terms.
Calliope - "ka-LIE-oh-pee", kinda strange but I like the meaning, "beautiful voice"
Cassandra
Ruby
Sapphire or Sapphira
Lily

Okay, okay, I'll stop now...this is a subject I could go on and on about ^_^;

For a boy, I'd choose William. (I almost got named William. ^^)
If it's a girl, maybe Amber or Josie...

I have dozens of names that I've used on various occasions, and that I might like to name my kid. It's hard to pick just one or two, but I suppose that it would probably be one of these:

For a girl:

Kaela (pronounced KAI-la, not KAY-la)

Asharah Meredith (two beautiful names that sound good together and have to do with the sea)

Luthíen (yes, borrowed from Tolkien. People could call her Lulu or something for short  )

For a boy:

Caden (pronounced KAY-den)

Hadrian (yes, after the wall  )

Katsuo (means 'victorious child' in Japanese)
In a world shrouded in mystery, the winds of change begin to blow.

Or you could be cruel and give them names that will make them social outcasts like:
Zoth
Mr. Stupid
Lumpy Doo
Mayonaise, ect.

Or names that will be confusing in public conversations:

You (think of the confusion that would cause)
Please (anytime someone says "Please pass the mustard" he will be obligated to do so)

Or ones that would just be impossible to pronounce:

Mogthnptofdsamglspiugquy
Ashfdgpthgy
Plthomthru (you get the picture)

Oh the possibilitys...

'May' for short or 'Mayo?'

bwahahahaha <--would never do that to a kid, but it sounds so funny

I like this topic! My names of choice would be as follows:

Girls
Lorelei(although I've used this for a character in a story, so maybe not...)
Meryl
Laurel Anne (a combo of similar names of two of my best friends)
Haru (also a name from a story)
Kelby or Kelbi (another name of a friend)
Alicia (after a role model of mine)
Serafina
Aika (pronounced EYE-kah)
Corrine (pronounced cuhr-IN)
Amaya
Elise (again, from a story and from the song Fur Elise)
Wren or Rin
Romani (pronounced ruh-MAH-nee)
Trista
Trinity
Luna

Boys
Kirin (yet again, after a story)
Sora (see above statement)
Avi (in Hebrew, means "God is my father")
Akira
Link
Keir or Keiren

Wow! That's way more than I thought...As far as being cruel to your children, there was a girl who went to my school whose name was Tya Boots (Tie-ya boots). Another student at the highschool is named Chase Heiney. Yes, it's pronounced that way. That's awful, but hilarious.

My first child: Ichigo
My second child: Nigo
My third child: Sango
...

But seriously, I'll have to see the child first.

Though I like the names Brian and Victoria.
Brian for Brian Boru, the famous Irish king - and I have a friend named Brian.
Victoria for the English Queen, and because I know someone named Victoria.
They're both strong names, and pretty decent.

Why do people want to give their children unique names? Do you think your children will be unique if they have unique names? If that theory holds true then the opposite should also be true right? A common name makes a common person? Right? Right? Wrong!

I can name one person who has a very common name for His time yet we worship Him as the creator of the universe. Jesus was probably the most common name in Jesus' time so surely Jesus Christ Himself is about as common as they come. The name of someone doesn't make the man.

As for me i dont know what ill name my kids. That's still a long way off and it's not only my decision anyway. We'll decide when the time comes.
Absence is to love as wind is to a flame. It extinguishes the little, it ignites the great.

Life is a test. It is only a test. Had this been real life you would have have been instructed where to go and what to do.

When i argue with reality I lose.....But only 100% of the time.

I really don't think that any of the names I listed were unique, except for Romana.
And that was from being a Dr.Who fan.
All of the others were pretty normal.Of course if I wanted my children to have
unique names I could name a daugther Fortune Flood or Fortune Jordan and
a son Hinchea/Hinchey/Hinshaw Gilliam, all of which are names of ancestors.

Ah, that's the beauty of it! Our Lord and Saviour, Creator of Heavens, and yet with a name that is so common to man. So unique, yet described to be so common, so humble. Perfectly fits as name of our Servant Lord on Earth.

Naming kids, isn't it a bit early for me to start thinking about that kind of stuff?

But when the time comes, I think a few names sound good:

For a boy, I like the name "Date." I personally think it sounds kind-of cool and it also goes well with my last name. Plus, how often do you hear that for a name?

For a girl I like the name "Rebecca."

You're named for my friend Brian? I didn't realize our circles of acquaintance were so close.

Unless you meant the Irish king, in which case, cool.

The names all depend on who I marry. hehehe

If my husband's last name is Montoya, the kid is obviously going to be named Inigo whether it's a boy or a girl.

If my husband's last name is Knight, and we have a son, his name will be Jedidiah so we can call him Jedi for short.

If my husband's last name is Paul, the child will be named Lesley so that we can call him/her Les.

If my husband's last name is Walker, any male child will be named Luke Sky and any female child will be named Leia Skye.

If my husband's last name is Martin, the child will have the initials C.F., even if the child's name has to be Claudia Frank.

If my husband's last name is Wright, the child will be named Can't.

If my husband's last name is Wallace, the child will be named William.

I'll come up with some more later. Hehehe...I feel sorry for any kids I may have.

For instance, If I was a Montoya, I wouldn't want an Inigo. Simply because Inigo Montoya's father gets murdered.

Most people are married awhile before they decide to have kids ya know.:P Well good luck with that because can't say I'd marry ya if I had to use names you wanted. I think it would be better to come to a mutual agreement over this is the way it's going to be. But with names like Can't Wright you sound so serious.;)

When my sister in Alaska and her husband were having their first son(he has two daugthers from a previous marriage and they were in California at the time)they made a deal that if it was a girl she would have a Spanish name since he came
originally from the Dominican Republic, but if it was a boy he would have a Scottish
name.
thank God it was a boy since Ian is much easier to spell and pronounce!
