As long as it falls within the parameters of the assignment, I would hope your teacher wouldn't have a problem with it (well maybe not the first few chapters of Chronicles!). However, I really would encourage you to broaded your literary horizons.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

This is something I would recommend talking to your teacher about. If it's a Christian school, I'm sure there wouldn't be any problem. If it's a public school, might be a little more difficult. I do agree you should broaden you literal horizons though, as TM put it.

On a side note, welcome back, Zip.

Yeah I'd like to echo what Techno said. Reading the Bible is the best thing you can read obviously, but you really should read other things too.

It is not wrong or anything. But be aware that you could be setting yourself up to be picked on. Or people may look at you as arrogant or snobbish (or nerdy... >^^<; Believe it or not..). If you are in a public, bringing bibles to school is not the brightest idea. Or at least from what I have observed in the schools I've been in. >"< You may offend other people with different religions.

Are there any rules for what books you can read...or criteria on what the books should be?

I agree with what has been said thus far. Of course the Bible is an excellent choice for reading, and any excuse to read it more I would seize on.

However, if you're only using it as a crutch to get out of your assignment, I don't think that's very fair or right. There are other good books out there you can read that wouldn't be offensive and wholesome too. Besides, using God as a way out of your assignment isn't very respectful, don't you think?

If you are doing it for pure motives or to make a stand, just remember this: people will see how you act or what you say as what Christ would act or say. That means if you are really arrogant or impolite to people who ask you about it, you are not being a good witness to them, and more of a disservice to God. So go ahead and read it if you like, but be careful about how you react if you get picked on or questioned--you may be the only Christ people see.

I don't see any harm in using the Bible to satisfy your reading requirements. I certainly don't think it's morally wrong. What I would question is what the intent of your teacher was. If your teacher simply wants you to read, then so be it. However, I suspect your teacher wants you to experience literature in a way you are not accustomed to doing right now.

In any case, a school assignment is a good excuse to broaden your horizons a little and read a book. There’s a lot of good books out there.

It ain't wrong if it's the assignment. It certainly was for HUM 1 and HUM 2 in my secular college. Needless to say, the professors don't hold it in as high regard as we do.

That's a shame really given how foundational it is to much of Western literature and thought. I know from marking student essays that those unfamiliar with Biblical ideas are likely to miss the the point a lot of the time when a writer alludes to it. I know that my own university offers a course on 'The Bible as Literature', and another on 'The Bible in Shakespeare'. I don't know if they do anything on Northrop Frye's work though.

I agree with what has been said by everyone else so far in this thread.
However as many people have already pointed out you should be willing to
broaden your reading horizions.

I say that theis could be a great way to witness to people if you talk about the assignement. Read the Bible anytime, any way. Just remember: we must follow what we read. I have to remember that some times.

I don't see a problem with it, but maybe you should read some other books too.
Silvanis, Christianity isn't a religion, its a relationship.
The Bible by its very nature is offensive to non-Christians, but you shouldn't go out of your way to offend people, just stick up for your faith when its threatened.

You're right. I shouldn't have said that. It's just I'm in a rather bad mood right now. I'm also worried for one of my friends. I have a lot on my mind.
