Homeschooling

Postby TurkishMonky » Wed May 11, 2005 10:24 am

Recently i've been pondering my education (graduation is next week! Yay!) and homeschooling in general. I've been homeschooled since 2nd grade, and dual-enrolled in a community college since 9th grade. In retrospect, I'm beginning to appreciate homeschooling much more than i did while taking my classes - writing papers in middle school with no defined "sources" except what I could find on my own (aka no textbook); taking time out of every vacation for varied field trips; and working in my room by myself, instead of a classroom. The education i've recieved from it has been completely excellent.

With this i've been wondering if there is anyone else here who is or has been homeschooled, or dual enrolled, and how they feel it helped them. Does anyone care to share musings of their own about this?

All I can say about homeschooling is that it got me almost 2 grades ahead, and I ended up graduating from high school at age 17.

I kinda have a beef with homeschooling. It doesn't have anything to do with the procedure or other home schoolers in general. The conflict resides with various friends whom are home schooled and thier mothers are modern day, female Hitlers.

I've gone to Public School my entire life so I can't really stand up and condemn or support home schooling since I never went through it. But the friends who were or have been home schooled hated it.

I love homeschooling (in comparison to going to schools anyway), but there is a problem with me. I need my mom to help me with Grammar and Algebra, but she's often working 24 hour shifts, and then she'll be too tired when she gets home the next day. As a result, I'm way behind. Also, I could be trying harder on my part. So I'm going to need to be doing work over the summer. >_<

Well, I'm homeschooled and I have to say I love it. My education has been teriffic.
I've been told on various occasions that I'm as well versed if not better in subjects than a lot of college students. I'm not sure why Turkish Monkey didn't have a text book, but I've always had 'em, so I've never felt like I lacked anything. I do A Beka vidoe school, and it's really hard, but you learn so much. I did get behind a little in Geometry, because it's something that is so varied it's hard to know if you're doing it wrong or just differently. Other than that I have no regrets. I do all my school with Osaka, so we're never bored, and there's a huge homeschooling community where I live, so I have lots of friends. For me, it's been great! :-D

I've gone to Public School my entire life so I can't really stand up and condemn or support home schooling since I never went through it. But the friends who were or have been home schooled hated it.

I think liking it or not liking it really depends on who you are and what your situation is. All of my friends love it. Except one, and he had a good reason not to like it, but I can't remeber what it was. I think it was that he was an only child, so it was hard for him to be home all day by himself or something like that. But don't look at homeschooling as being so bad-- there are loads of people who wouldn't have it any other way, so it can't be so bad! *wink*

I'm really interested in what folk think about being homeschooled. My husband and I are thinking of homeschooling our kids, but we are actually thinking of doing it together. We know of only one other family where both parents teach their kids. My son who is 6 mostly wants to do it so he can swim with his dad every day for PE. One of my friends who was homeschooled hated it because she was on her own all the time. Even though she came from a large family, her mom (who was in charge) basically told the kids to figure it out for themselves. Has anyone been to both homeschool and public school? What is your opinion?

Yup, sorry bout bringing it up.

My parents and I were seriously thinking about homeschooling my sister since she is easily swayed by her classmates and every day she either comes home in tears or complaining about something.

I've been homeschooled since 2nd grade and next year I'll be going into a real highschool. So, I've been thinking about my past and realizing how much homeschooling has helped me. I went to a reasorse center so I could take some classes but most days I was with my mom working in textbooks. I've found that beause of that me and my mom have a pretty good relationship... ecept when she's been around me tooo long. I've also found that over the past 2 years (7th and 8th grade) it's really turned into selfschooling which is awesome, because it propairs me for what I'll have to face in highschool and college.

I have always loved the flexiblility of homeschooling and how it seems to produce hardworking, selfschooling, awesome students... well, I'm sure there are some bad kids but I've never met one. So, YAY for homeschooling.

Same here, I need my mom's help with both of those things, but she's at work most of the day and when she gets back, she's usually too tired to help me. And, Im very lazy about it...so just like you im way behind. Im going to try harder now though, cuz I reeaaaally wanna pass this year. Yep, im gunna be doing work over the summer as well. :P But thats no one's fault but mine.

I've been homeschooled for over a year now, and I'm rather glad of it.

Both public and private schools have been social nightmares for me. I will say that the pressure has toned me down a little bit, and I'm not as saucy as I was before. That I am thankful for. However, over the years the constant teasing, pushing, prodding...was beginning to get to me in a big way.

I can't stand when someone is being picked on. I'm a little girl, thin and weak, but if I see a kid that's getting hurt I will protect them with all that I am, no matter what happens. Therefore the whole time I was in the school system I had a huge target on my back. Every day a group of girls and their "boyfriends" would find something to jeer at me about.

By the sixth grade, I was shutting down. I was depressed and wanted nothing to do with anyone or anything involved with school. When I was little, I loved school despite being picked on. Now...I wanted revenge.

I asked my mom to pull me out and homeschool me, and she was afraid I wouldn't get a good education if she taught me. However, she put me in an "independent studies program" (half homeschool and half public school). The first day I went I found friends that turned out to be the best friends I've ever had in my life. We still talk via e-mail and sometimes phone even though they are 3,000 miles away.

A year and a half later, we moved to FL. The independant studies program was an experimental school that is only in CA. So...I'm homeschooled.

I miss MVA (the i.s. school), but I'm happy where I am too. It's better than having to go to Florida schools.

Next year I am going to try out Florida Virtual School. I'm taking Basic Systems Training and eventually I'll work my way up to taking my first computer programming classes. I'm going to dual-enroll in two years.

I guess if you have siblings and family around that can look out for you, public school is fine. I count myself blessed to have both my parents and my little sister with me, but I have no other family with me. When I went to PA I saw all of my cousins that had so much support from all of my relatives...and I must admit I was a little jealous. I've moved around all my life. I have a house that I call 'home', but I never really know if it will be for long.

So while I'm wandering around the US, I'll homeschool so I can take my teacher with me on the adventure...:)

Hey, sry i've not responded in a while, i was at my brother's debate tourney.

To clarify, i do have some textbooks, but for a few classes (mostly history) I took a research-based currculum so the point was to research tons and tons about my favorite obscure topics :thumb: I happen to pick the most obscure topics naturally. (No, really- once i looked through google results for a solid 14 hour period to find a layout of an obscure building in a tiny unknown city. Out of 5000 results, 3 pages alone on the entire internet had images of the building, from which i was basically able to reconstruct it)

Anyway, although homeschoolingis not for everyone, I highly reccomend it to those considering it if you have a good curriculum and time to homeschool.

Now i shall release my energy...

I was homeschooled 1st through 3rd and the last two years of school. There are only two things about it that I don't like: being alone with only family to talk to and the fact that there isn't really a gym class.

The curriculum I used helped me greatly, since I was failing in public school.
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone
And so hold on when there is nothing left in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!' ...you'll be a Man, my son!

Wow, thanks for all the input. My family is pretty lucky in that we live in an area where there are some good opportunities for gym or recreation for homeschoolers. That is a really important thing to keep in mind. Also, having folks to talk to outside the family (maybe church friends, neighbors?) Thanks, guys.

i was homschooled and think its a great form of education, while it may not be the best for everyone, (everyones differant) i do believe it is a good way to give children education in a God centered way.
