Fears

Postby Mr. SmartyPants » Mon May 02, 2005 4:47 pm

ive always felt uncomfortable about this, but i never really felt like telling anyone about it... but like... yeah i am some scaredy cat XD if ya wanna call it that

like... for example... the last shot i had was when i was 8! (Ill be 16 on may 30th) and ive never had a tetanus shot, a hepatitus shot, or whatever...

im also really scared of growing wisdom teeth... cause like.... having them pulled out hurts... a small percentage of people have their wisdom teeth grow normally, and i seriously hope that they would too... because i really don't want them pulled out

im also ghastly afraid of needles... i mean.... i feel that a puncture wound would be more severe then a brick hitting my head (although i know that to be false, that is the "mentality" that i have)

so... uh.... anyway to cope with these? Because i know ill have to get shots soon (aka going to Poland, or going to college, etc etc etc) and it really... scares the crap out of me

Play a rock song on your iPod and rock out before you get your shot.

EDIT: I recommend anything by Thousand Foot Krutch or Norma Jean =]

Well, with needles I used to be the same way. The thing I always remembered... dare I say it? Well... here goes. Tense up your butt muscles. I know it sounds funny, but when your arms are relaxed shots don't hurt as much. If you spend the whole time thinking about tensing up, then you'll not be as anxious. Also, look away. It helps. ^_^

*lightbulb over head* Ask the dentist to numb you. I know they dont' do it much, but maybe you'll get lucky if they have to pull your teeth. I also suggest that afterwards you drink Ensure. It'll keep you strong and doesn't hurt.

I seriously wouldn't worry about the tetanus shot...I don't like needles either, but you don't feel anything. Seriously. Then your arm is sore for a few days and then it's over...er..and you should have had all your hep shots when you were little...I did. :D Wisdom teeth? I guess you get over that too. :| I'm 16 and I still don't have them out. :0

Oh yeah, and they DO use numbing stuff for your teeth.

*hugs Smartypants* I hate needles! Honestly, close your eyes before you get a shot. =O At least that works for me. You don't see it coming, and even though needles are icky, it just feels like a quick pinch in your arm.

x3; I was also scared to death before I got my wisdom teeth pulled - but don't let it get to you. You can ask the doctor to either use anesthetic on you (you don't feel or remember a thing! O_O It's great!) or put you to sleep depending on how uncomfortable the procedure makes you. =3; They also numb your arm before they put the IV in, and you're out in a matter of seconds after that. :lol: It's actually kind of funny. When you wake up you don't hurt and you feel really loopy and you say some pretty crazy things. XD; Just make sure you take some pain-killer and put ice on your cheek before the anesthetic wears off completely, otherwise it's gonna take a long while for the swelling in your mouth to go down. =3;

Hon, let me tell you...that's nothing to be embarrassed about. I'm terrified of needles too.

In fact....I cry when my blood is taken. I'm almost 24 and I cry like a baby when the nurse has to draw any amount of blood. It terrifies me.

Your best bet is to NOT think about it...I agree with the ipod suggestion. Bring something loud and heavy to keep you distracted....so that you can't even hear them warn you. Tensing your rear end helps too ^_^

As to the wisdom teeth problem...that's easily remedied! Per everyone elses, suggestion, they can deaden your gums, either with a shot or sometimes with a salve/liquid applied to the gum.

You'll be fine ^_^

I used to be so scared of needles, until I had to start getting Allergy shots...now..its no big deal to me :) when your getting your shot, just dont think about it, that used to help me all the time, and sometimes now..I dont even feel the needle. Yeah..the only thing that makes me sick...is drawing blood..thats different than getting a shot...and I already get sick just thinking about blood...it dosnt help when someones taking it from me, I've almost fainted a couple times from it.

I don't really mind needles very much, but I don't like being at the doctor.
When I'm nervous it always makes me more comfortable to start a conversation with my doctor.

I don't remember my wisdom teeth extraction, mostly because I was under the influence of some kind of intravenously administered anesthetic.

That was the best nap I've ever had.

unless your wisdom teeth are coming in somehow that will enable the doctors to pull them easily, you will probably have to go to a dental surgeon to get them pulled. it's not that bad at all. the worst part for me was the blood pressure monitor they hooked up which took my blood pressure once every 30 seconds to a minute, the constant squeezing on my arm from that was driving me batty until i was out from the anethesia.

but you might want to watch out for an emotional reaction from the anethesia.. i cried for no reason after waking up after my wisdom teeth were removed, and a classmate of mine had emotional delusions. but it's different for everybody. *shrugs*

i have very tiny and practically invisible veins, so i hate needles solely for the fact that if i get a shot that involves veins or get blood drawn, it's going to take a LOT of poking :( . the way i handle shots is to look away.

I had my gums cut open, then my wisdom teeth sawed into pieces then each pieace pulled out of the incision... I was really scared before but after it wasn't so bad... except for the pain.... But my real fear are clowns and spiders...

AHHHH CLOWNS AND SPIDERS!!!!

(seriously)
The Straight and Narrow

I chose to walk the straight and narrow road, but one day I lost balance and fell off it. I had fallen onto some sharp rocks and injured myself. There were people passing by who would merely stare at me, and then keep walking. Thoughts of worthlessness entered into my mind, and as I chose to believe the lies, my wounds grew worse. I was so overcome with grief that I nearly gave up... but then a man walked up to me and stopped. Without saying a word, he started to wrap my wounds, he gave me some water, and then lifted me up and embraced me. He then whispered these words into my ear, "I love you my child." As he said those words I could feel all the worthlessness and despair fall away. He then held out his hands. They had huge holes in them. He then said, "Walk with me." I then took his hand and we walked together. Every now and then I would fall from the road, but no matter where I fell, he was always there to pick me up and tell me that He loved me.

Fears? Hmm. The only fear I have...I have beaten as of late. Hights really used to bug me...but somewhere along the line I lost my fear of death. Now, I can ride rides...climb stuff....it really does not bother me anymore. I know my grip on whatever I am holding...so I am confident. But yeah from when I was like 12-16 hights really bugged me.

I was deathly afraid of needles growing up. If they had an oral medication for it, that's what I went with. I even passed out during my medical for my marriage license because I thought they were going to draw blood, which they didn't.

However, time seems to take the fear away. As of late I have had to have a number of blood tests for medical and insurance reasons. I've gotten to where I can handle it now.

But I still do have the fear of heights. I cannot get close to the edge of a building or railing that is several stories up.

Hehe. ^^; I was always afraid of the concept of forever. Sounds kinda strange but it's true. Besides that I can't think of any major fears I have aver, or do have.

in general, i have a fear of heights and even climbing on children's playground equipment that can't even be 6 feet in the air, i get all tensed up and nervous. i also have a slight fear of spider webs... *rolls eyes* i know, wierd, spiders don't bother me very much, but their webs, or more-so contact with their webs, freak me out. i also seem to have a fear of having my hands stepped on by a horse or cow (my family ranches, so this could very well occur) and never being able to use them again.

i was a rather neurotic child and have a very long list of things that terrified me up until i was about 7. ET was on this list, at the very top, and a mention of ET is still enough to cause me to twitch slightly. XD

I don't have a fear of spiders, because my room seems to be crawling with them, and their little cobwebs too. Uh, I guess arachnophobes shouldn't visit my house. Though I am afraid of poisonous creatures in general... spiders don't scare me one bit. Weird.

Barking dogs freak me out whenever I go on my evening constitutional.

For some reason, you having a fear of barking dogs is a very odd concept for me.

Nothing in particular scares me, but when I'm scared, I must have my feet covered. God knows why. It's just...creepy...what if something touches my feet? I'D DIE!! SOCKS! I NEED SOCKS, STAT!!

Normally, it's okay. I mean, I can walk around barefoot, step on things, you know. But if something scares me, like a scary story (that one about the puzzle, for example), then my feet must be covered.
