Content in Reviews...

Postby TrigunX89 » Mon May 02, 2005 1:21 am

I love this site, and I hate to complain, but may I request that people be a bit more detailed in describing the content in their reviews?

I read the Noir review before buying the series on DVD. The review said...

There is an unwanted kiss from one character to another character for around 10 seconds in episode 25.

I would have liked to know that the kiss was between two fully naked girls...

I read the Iria review before buying the DVD. The review said...

There's a couple shower scenes that are highly fanservicey.

I would have liked to know that it had full nudity in it.

Anyways, I really do appreciate the reviews. I'm just requesting that maybe they would be a bit more detailed in their descriptions. Thank you!

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend. I really liked both Noir and Iria, and I appreciate the reviews too. I respect the writers too.

You can't really see much, but Kirika and Chloe are naked when they kiss each other in the pond. I'm not quite sure how you missed that.[/spoiler]

I'm pretty sure there was one shower scene and. . . um, a pond scene (?) in Noir. I haven't gotten to that volume yet, but a number of reviews mentioned it.

As someone who's written a few reviews, let me just vouch for what a tough job it is. Sometimes you don't know what to put in and what to leave out. Futhermore, in anime with deeper plots (like the ones listed above), there are times when a reviewer is trying to reveal content without divulging the plot. That's hard. Really hard.

Furthermore, I just like to mention that if a shower scene is put in the "nudity" section of the review-- um, it's going to have nudity in it. Not just shoulders and knees. If it were in the sensuality section, then it might just be some more harmless back shots and the like, but in the nudity section, you can probably count on seeing something you didn't want to see.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I was a little surprised a bout some of the things TrigunX89 mentioned in noir after reading the review.
I know you work really hard on the reviews so I hate to complain, but also from the review it made Noir seem to be not very violent, while Noir wasn't gory, me and my parents thought it Was very violent [this coming from my dad who thinks a good family movie is "Black Hawk Down"] because CAA is the only place I feel I can get a good review of things, I think it would be better to be overly cautious, even counting how many times a character swears or curses.

Mai, Noir is for mature audiences and you may be a mature 14 year old, but it is meant for older teens and young adults, so keep that in mind when you're reffering to Noir. But I see where you're coming from. But more violent than Black Hawk Down? Not for me, no way!

CAA prefers us to review the series as a whole and not as individual discs, so specifics (like # of swear words) is not really feasable. Also, since we're not professional reviewers, each individual has their own standards. For example, I tolerate more violence than nudity, but I tend to not think of it as nudity, unless it is detailed.

So we try to catch the main points that we think will bother people, and maybe we don't think of everything. I think that's what the threads discussing each individual review is suited for.

It sometimes helps to read the review thread as well. Things that might not be fleshed out in the review sometimes are in the threads. Whenever a new review is added a thread is started about it as well.

Thanks, I will check out the review threads next time. Again, I really don't mean to complain. I just wasn't expecting some of the stuff I saw.

Hmm....why not contact the reviewer in question or the moderator who handles reviews personally next time? That would help avoid making anyone feel criticized or underappreciated.

I've reviewed manga titles, which significantly takes up less time than anime. It's always been a challenge to keep the reviews detailed enough and yet spoiler free.

Like CDLViking said, it helps to get a few ppl's opinions on something before trying it out.

Just a headsup. Gypsy who does the lions share of the work on the reviews is on vacation at the moment. As far as the whole nudity issue goes...this is gonna sound mean...but I think its foolish to be mad if someone tells you..theres nudity in it. You watch it...then get mad that more is shown then you thought. What, is a butt not as bad as breasts? If its somthing you want to shy away from...don't be ala carte with it...I think we should be thankful people took the time to do reviews at all...

Let me too say something about the standards of reviews here. I have seen the pending database list, and it isn't pretty. You would not believe what some people have the guts to turn in, because it completely lacks any sense of grammar OR content whatsoever. I know Gypsy busts her butt all the time to keep those reviews nice and polished. And plus, to the very best of our abilities, the staff (cough Gypsy cough) check out the reviews and makes sure nothing has been "left out" like that. So really, our standards are pretty lofty compared to what I have seen floating around the internet.

My best advice? If you're going to be upset enough to make a thread like this...check multiple sources. I do it all the time. I love CAA reviews and they are my absolute first response, but it never hurts to get multiple opinions and makes sure you've got your bases covered.

Wow. Again, I'm sorry. I was never mad at the reviewers, and I certainly was not trying to flame anybody. I was merely making a suggestion. I'm sorry to offend anyone. You can close this thread... I didn't mean for this to happen.

Offend anyone? I doubt you did that... you where only asking a question.

I will agree that sometimes the reviews do lack specific details... But to me, reviews and summaries are a bit different. Reviews give a general details about a movie/series providing gerenalized information about the "overall" feel of the show and specs such as music, video and material (gore, violence, sexual situation etc).

Summaries are more of details about the show. What happened and such; the who, what, when, where etc. Although I may not always agree w/ some of the scores/ratings people give certain animes, it's their opinion. I use CAA reveiews to get a christian perspective on certain animes. Although brief nudity and violence doesn't really bother me, I can't tell you how many times I've read a review online that gave so much detail to certain events and leave out things like: nudity, amount of gore and so forth. THat's why I use CAA and other reviews as a tool to tell whether it would interest me. Plus, I would rather watch the anime first instead of reading it. :P
