For Sailormoon Fans

If I get permission from mods to link (with some warnings, I suppose) you can read on a page a list of edits to the dubbed episodes of sailormoon... I'm not linking now because I realized that the site did have some things I felt I should run by the mods first.

A word to anyone planning on getting ADV's set, like me. The old footage is really washed out, and it IS, afterall, about 11 years old (most anime that old looks washed out unless it has enough fanbase to restore it for DVD like Akira and Grave of the fireflies, and of course restoring such a large show would be more expensive than it's worth) and of course, for those of us who've moved on to some better anime, the cheesyness may be too much for us, but for those of us more or less introduced to anime via SM, these box sets are sorta like getting that radio flyer, or that oscar mayer weiner whistle... Um... I think I skipped some steps in logic there... (thinking of the scene in Jurassic park where Malcom explains Chaos theory to Ellie)

Anyhow, I do plan on getting them... Eventually... i figure, wait a year and the price should drop to a buyable price... You know, NOT 130 dollars... But I can get them for under 80 at half.com, so I may get it there in a couple months... And I can watch it on my lovely new PS2 (here hopes, anyhow...) I've never watched season 2 (other than the VKLL fansubs, which were only the last few episodes) so I'm missing a big chunk of the story there... I just wish that S and SuperS would get box sets (uncut, of course, with subs) and that we'd finally get stars... I'd love to have the whole collection, but it's not at the top of my list...

Well, um... to keep this post on topic... Anyone have the ADV box sets? I heard their subs were pretty bad... IS that true, and if so how do you know? They did fudge excel's subs a little tiny bit, I could tell, but I was under the impression they were mostly accurate... Some of the differences between ADV and Chikashitsu (the fansubbers for seasons 1 and the beginning of season 2) may just be in translation style, but do serious mistranslations occur in ADV's work? I'll be getting it anyhow... The subs are optional, and 46 (well, 88 when I get both) episodes to watch in pure Japanese will be great for my studies! (hehe, perfect excuse to watch anime) Once my grasp of Japanese is a bit better, I don't have to worry about bad translations anymore, just obscure figures of speech and cultural issues that should be explained in linear notes... Do ADV's box sets have linear notes? I wouldn't expect it, but it would be nice... Or, anyone have a link to linear notes for the whole series that explain the little cultural things and inside jokes and Japanese humor? Not very many anime get released with them anymore, and I haven't seen any of ADV's anime released with them... It's sad, but I guess people don't view anime as potentially educational anymore... It's too mainstream now... If anyone knows of a site with linear notes for SM seasons 1-2, or specifically for ADV's subs, let me know...

Looks like were alone in our Salior Moon Fandom Bob. Anyway I don't own any of the box sets or dvd's I wanna pick them up though. All I have are a few poor quality movies and episodes off tv on vhs. I love SM though it really was like the first anime I ever saw when I was like 11 or 12. Anyway I would love to see it subbed and unedited. (note to self pick up some SM DVD's Soon)

Just like you guys, Sailor Moon was pretty much my first anime, so these DVD releases are pretty exciting for me!

I bought the first season box set, and although I have to admit that they look a little washed out and the sound is muffled, I barely even notice it now that I'm on Disc 6. You really just get used to it and it doesn't bother you much, especially if you're a dedicated Sailor Moon fan. I've already ordered season 2 and it should be here by the end of the week. Actually, if you want a good price on these box sets, go to Overstock.com -- they have them for $96 each, and you may want to check out Digital Eyes.net, which usually has good buys and free shipping (media mail).

About Sailor Stars, I also just ordered a region 0 release off of eBay (I know, I'm going deeper into credit card debt as I type, but I'm gonna have to stop all this buying soon  ). The region 0 release is in the original Japanese with English subtitles, and as far as I can tell it looks official (not a fansub). Plus, Bob, region 0 DVDs are supposed to work on any DVD player, including your PS2 (that's my player of choice). A few different sellers are offering them for about $40 (which actually sounds questionable, but I picked a good seller). When I get mine, I'll try to post a message letting you all know if it's a good thing or not. I can't wait to finally see Stars, though!

And, finally, I agree with you, Bob, that anime can be looked at as educational. I'm actually doing my final "senior seminar" project at my college next year on anime (I'm a communication major). So, there's at least two of us who agree that anime is educational and socially redeeming! :thumb:

You're not alone Bob. SM started my anime interests and will always be a personal favorate of mine...corny or not. I happily own both Sets for Season 1 and Season 2. If you want to purchase them at good prices....go to Best Buy. I got my Season 1 set there for 108$ (That includes tax), and the Season 2 set would be around 125$ (Not as good a price, but cheaper...nontheless) but I got it at a recent convention for 120$

Well, um... to keep this post on topic... Anyone have the ADV box sets? I heard their subs were pretty bad... IS that true, and if so how do you know? They did fudge excel's subs a little tiny bit, I could tell, but I was under the impression they were mostly accurate... It's too mainstream now... If anyone knows of a site with linear notes for SM seasons 1-2, or specifically for ADV's subs, let me know...

Subtitles:

Well, my knowledge of japanese is mostly limited to the various phrases I have instinctively picked up plus a few minor lessons here and there, but I will say this. The ADV subs, although a bit different than what you'd first expect SEEM to be just fine when compared with the fansubs. I can see differences in translation...and there are one or 2 translations that are widely accepted in the fan community that will come across as odd to see (I.E. Youma is simply translated as Monster...I suppose this would be true, but it feels a bit basic). Beyond that I haven't noticed any major gripes that would detract from the subs as a whole.

Video:

Now, as for the content, the video quality is fine considering the series has aged 10-11 years. No grain or marcoblocking in the encodings...just a bit of age to the source, but it's hardly a problem.

Audio:

The Audio has suffered noticably though on the first boxset and many episodes have a somewhat muffled sound to them...which is a shame. However, most episodes turn out decently. The R boxset seems to have better sound quality all throughout, though there was apparrently an odd quibble about 4 seconds of dubb audio getting on episode 68, and how this was possible I have NO IDEA, but it's fixed in the current releases...so no big deal.

Extras:

None to speak of on either set...this is kind of a disappointment, but Pioneer didn't do much better on their releases of S and SuperS so I can just suspect that Toei didn't give out much.

Now, there is ONE detail that has caused problems with these sets, and yet the reasons for this happening will surprise many fans. Episode 67...the same episode that was removed from the English dub for unknown reasons, has been DROPPED from the R boxset alltogether! ADV fought hard to get it...but Toei absolutely refused to give them the episode source so it had to be released without it! The reasons suspected for this is that the people at Toei extremely dislike this episode and wish to forget it's existance altogehter. It WAS just a throwaway episode that came into the plot at a rather awkward time and just broke of the pace, so it's not THAT missed...but this will undoubtedly peeve off many completists. However, that's not enough reason not to get the boxset, just hunt down a VCD or fansub tape of the missing ep.

Overall, I'm still rather happy with these sets. I've waited years to get them and they're finally here.

To Hedge: Serious? Well, I guess toei was all about the money to begin with... I saw the missing ep in question... I don't know what they're freaking out about... It wasn't THAT bad! There were some episodes in the first seasone that were a LOT worse than that... I liked Kirin-chan, hehehe... I mean, what qualified as embarassing to them?? I mean, so it was a break from the story, not like there aren't like a billion other times that happens... I mean, it is as a show anyhow pretty high on the fluff count...

Stupid Toei...

Yeah, I plan on getting them secondhand from half.com, I'll wait a few months, Maybe they'll drop down to 70 a piece or lower! I can only dream... I want to get some other stuff first, like Nadesico and also I'll be getting "To End All Wars" new the day it comes out in the US (Man, it's made by an american so why do Australia and the UK get it before us?? Shimata baka ni! (according to simpsons, that's Japanese for "D'oh!"))

To Dolkinzer: A luna avatar... I wonder if that means something hehehe Though you'll have to fall in love with an astronaut before you even acknowledge me hehehe j/k... Have you seen the S movie, Dolkinzer?

Um... Yeah... Was that just a little over the top, I can never tell...

forgot to say, but it's worth a new post: what about linear notes? Do you know where I can find cultural notes for the first two seasons? VKLL used to have notes in their subs, but I don't think Chikashitsu did, and It would really help to have some stuff explained... I meaned, because of VKLL's culture notes, I learned that sneezing in Japanese superstition means someone is talking about you behind your back and I learned about all sorts of Japanese stories and points of culture and such... Is there anything like that online for seasons 1 and 2?

and, off topic, know of notes for Nadesico or other big shows online?

If anything, my SoN logic would put it more in a "Seeta Setsuko" than a "Artemis and Luna" right now...

"Little Sister, Little Girl..." Um... Yeah, I'm somewhat of a creed fan...

Anyhow, Dolkinzer, I hope you know I'm only joking...

Well, just like I promised, I can finally say that I own the Sailor Stars DVDs. They're all-region, not "region 0," like I said before. The DVDs are Japanese with English subtitles, and they're absolutely official (in another country, at least), with a really cool folding case and everything. This ain't no fansub! I'm really excited, although I've only had a chance to watch the first episode. The price isn't bad, as I've seen most ebay sellers offering for around $40. Just make sure you're getting the official one -- look for a picture of a folding case for the DVDs and a reliable seller (I bought mine from a seller in New Zealand).

Official by who? Who released them? Who translated them? I'm pretty sure all english versions come from Canada or the US, not from the UK or Australia or NZ... And Certainly not from Hong Kong. As far as I knew, no one had sailor stars yet... And I checked, it's not on the big list of licensed titles... Hmm...

On the back of the case, it says "TOEI CO., LTD. & VIDEO CO., LTD." Toei is the company behind Sailor Moon in Japan, so I'm thinking this is actually the Japanese release, with English subtitles (I've heard of Japanese releases actually having English titles included, but they don't automatically 'turn on'). Anyway, if you'd like, I can scan my case and let everyone see it. Just let me know!

:red: *Sigh.* Boy, am I a dummy or what? Well, just before scanning my case, I took the DVDs out (just in case the scanner would mess them up or something -- I'm paranoid), and I looked at some very small, teeny tiny, writing on the front of the disc amid pictures of the Sailor Senshi, and there I saw two email addresses for a couple of Yahoo! users that no longer have accounts with Yahoo! (I checked on members.yahoo.com). So, Bob, you were absolutely right. My Stars DVDs are indeed fansubs, though they are certainly very cleverly disguised as professional-looking ones. I didn't know fansubs could look so official! I went ahead and scanned the case anyway so that you could see it -- it even has a barcode, which confuses me -- how could they have a legal barcode on fansubbed anime? I'm pretty new to fansubs (this was my first), so maybe I'm just ignorant with this subject.

ANYWAY, I'm still pleased with my DVDs, and they are a lot of fun to watch. I could have gone on still thinking I had something official and it would have never affected me in the least.

I love Sailor Moon. It is what got me into anime, manga, fanfiction, looking online for anime webpages, and actually building webpages. Despite the fact that it may not be my #1 favorite anymore, it is still towards the top of my list.

I will probably only buy the end episodes, or pivotal episodes of the series (if possible). Those were the only parts I truly liked from the anime (youma of the day... don't make me get on a rant about that...). The only exception to that rule would be if Sailor Stars got lisensed, then I'd get them all (all of the Stars DVDs). Otherwise, only the end episodes and big fights.

Wait, scratch that. I'd probably want all of R if I could get the chance to get it cheap.

You can't buy separate eps of seasons 1 and 2 subbed... Only the box sets... besides, you can always skip the fluff...
