Nope, never read Full Metal Panic. Personally, I can't stand NGE--too many twisted symbols. My anime list would include angelic layer, trigun, cowboy bebop and gundam wing.

I've got the first volume of FMP (borrowed off a friend) and I plan to read it at some point. (so far I've only read about 10 pages). I'll let you know how it goes.

First post. I've watched half of both Full Metal Panic Anime and Full Metal Panic Fumoffu. Unfortunately I haven't seen all of either one.

As for NGE, its a classic, but in retrospect, it wasn't really that good. In the end it was interesting because it combined a huge diversity of ideas. A few of these include a post-apocalyptic world, giant mechs, teenagers and religious ideas. It also features (like a lot of other animes) the rampant misuse of the christian cross.

If you want to watch a trippy anime, watch Serial Experiments Lain. I'm planning to do a lenthy analysis of that anime later this afternoon on this forum. Feel free to critisize or expand my ideas.

Alright, I have not read the manga. I have seen about 7 or 8 episodes of the anime, and I must say that it wasn't one of my favorites. The action I liked, it was just, boring sorta. It was okay, if I were to rate it I'd give it a six. Though I haven't read the manga yet.

As for the question, yes Evangelion is one of my favorite animes. Though it has just a little intense scenes if you will. But I recommend it. Great anime, and the manga is awesome. I'd suggest reading the manga first, then watch the anime. I think it explains the plot a little better.

Hmm, guess I was a bit too harsh on NGE, but it is a good anime to watch at least once, just to see what a cult anime is like (as in an anime that has had a huge interest in it around the world.)

Personally though, although it was great at first, I think the story got more and more convulted, specially near the end. Its not just the psychological perspective of Shinji that it took in the last two episodes, its also the characters and plots that got twisted, as you can see with Asuka and her parents, Gendo and Rei (and Ritsuko), Shinji and Asuka, Shinji and Kaoru... its probably what made the anime interesting, but for me it just ruined all the characters by making them insane and or dirty.

As for Full Metal Panic.. if you liked it for the humour of Sasuke being in a normal high school, find a copy of the sequel Full Metal Panic Fumoffu... its more an alternate reality rather than a sequel. Its all about Sasuke and Chidori at school, with almost no mechas or battles at all. I liked it more than the original.

As for that Serial Experiments Lain analysis... I *was* going to make a thread for it, but during my research I found a site thats already got my point of view in it.. almost exactly how I would explain it (I thought my interpretation was unique.. but seeing that it was spot-on, somebody beat me to writing it.) His analysis of the Anime is **WARNING: SPOILERS* here. See especially his interpretation of the main character Lain, which is what I concluded when I watched the series.

Neon Genesis Evangelion was the biggest letdown. It had a horrible ending that just went on and on and on and on... boring. :shake: The characters started out great, but what a let down. FMP? We watch it, but it's not a classic. It's not like Slayers, Ranma 1/2, Trigun or Rurouni Kenshin. It won't stick around as one of the great anime's. It's kind of boring after awhile. Right now, Haibane Renmai and Twelve Kingdoms are very interesting - good characters and great stories. I also like Scrapped Princess, but I can only get HK or fansubs. What kind of anime do you like? Do you usually like mechas?

[size=84][color=seagreen]YOU SEE

You see into the deepest part of me ---

beyond the fog I hide behind.

You cast your light upon the shadows

that stretch like cobwebs in my mind.

You ease the pain when I am hurting,

and morbid visions from my past

pierce into the realm of Reason

as though I danced on blades of glass.

You grant me strength when I have fallen

and, once again, I've lost my way.

You take my hand in Yours and lead me

into the promise of a brand new day.

You bring order to all my chaos,

yet set my well-laid plans awry.

You place me on a firm foundation ---

then give me wings so I can fly.

You sand away my roughened edges

and polish all the dullest parts

until I stand before Your presence...

a newly-sculpted work of art.

You see into the heart within me,

right through my motives and selfish will.

And yet, in spite of all You see

You say You love me even still.

Actually, I just remembered why I liked Full Metal Panic and Fumoffu. Its not the story or animation, its the music... Shimokawa Mikuni's voice plus the great music (which you can listen to without her singing) made the anime's theme and credits stand out.

Hmm, does the manga show where Sasuke blows up his shoe box because someone slipped a love letter in there? Thats in the first episode of FMP Fumoffu I think.

I'll do a quick review of FMP Fumoffu here since not many people know about it.. peronally I think its an entertaining series. The style is quite different from the original (if thats all you've seen). As I might have mentioned before, mechas aren't even seen (mostly heard), and it centers around the stuff Sasuke and Chidori deal with in high school. Although it uses a fairly typical romance-comedy formula (theres a beach episode, a ghost story episode, an episode where you think Chidori might not like Sasuke, etc.), its still tend to be quite funny (even more so if you've watched the original.)

As a final warning, there is a bit of weird stuff, like some subtle hints to adult stuff and censored swearing (both used humorously), but on that note, its doesn't occur as often as in Chobits.

(Oops I just scrolled up and realized you wanted a review of Eva, heh. Oh well, you did mention that you don't want an anime that has god/goddesses. If that means you don't like seeing religious things that aren't true (stuff that refer to God that isn't biblical), evangelion has HEAPS of stuff that relates to God the wrong way. They took a lot of stuff from a cult that left some Dead Sea Scrolls or something.(someone mentioned it was kabala). So if you don't like that sort of stuff, as in giant "Angels" fighting man over the remains of the first human (Adam), or giant robots using the spear that stabbed Jesus on the cross as weapons, then definitely avoid Eva.
(Actually, I just did a bit of searching, check out bobtheduck's comments here.

On that note, If you liked Eva cause it was weird, check out FLCL (I just watched the first 4 episodes). A quick search of FLCL would show you the FLCL thread.
