I would urge caution on the choice of words here. I wouldn't want to see the thread closed.

Mr. Ross, unless you want to lose your membership here, I suggest you simply stay out of this thread. You have done nothing so far but cause unneeded strife and antagonism on this thread which was going along very nicely. So now I'm going to say it in a not-so-nice way: either say something positive or worth hearing, or stay out. No irreverent or offensive attachments in the name of "humor", no immature responses like "I'm not going to respond" that you KNOW stir up trouble. Just stop it, and leave this thread for those that wish to discuss the new pope.

I read this morning that pope Benedict XVI stated that Church unity is one of the top things on his agenda, as is interreligious dialogue. I'm so very glad to hear this. JPII did a lot for unity between East and West, and with the Jews. Unity among Christians is something very close to my heart, and I hope to live to see the day when divisions among us will cease. I was so happy I could cry when I read about him seeking Christian unity.

It's forgiven and forgotten. Back to topic:

CDLViking, that's cool. I consider myself a pretty big advocate of unity among Christians so this is good news to me. :D

Stop it Sundou and let them talk about their Pope. If your trying to be a smarty pants, it's not working.
It would be a shame to see a new member get in trouble.

Especially since he knows all the main issues of division-- he was on many of the Catholic-Protestant and Catholic-Orthodox meetings. In one of his books he reminds us that Christ himself prayed "That they may be one" and that indicates ecumenism and seeking to bring about unity is important for the Church to seek out.

The Los Angeles Times gave him most of the newspaper dedicated to him.

No. I believe it is a two thirds majority to decide on the pope. There's no campaigning involved, so once they're in the conclave the cardinals spend most of their time in prayer.

You can go to the Vatican website and read the documents. I once posted the link for the document on Papal elections, but my internet gets twitchy when I'm on CAA so I can't look for it now. I believe it was on the thread we had when John Paul II died.

2/3 was always the preferred way. The others were eliminated. I think God guided the Pope to update the system to keep things from falling apart.

I don't know what name Mercurius took though.
I think Benedict XVI will make a great Pope from what little I have read
or heard about him. :thumb:
Then again I'm Protestant and so it doesn't effect me as much as it would
our Catholic members.
My sister in Alaska, who's Baptist, thinks that the more liberal Catholics especially here in the States aren't exactly going to be too happy though.

Mercurius changed his name to John II(if I remember what I read correctly) because he thought his name sounded like the pagan god Mercury.

I am glad to have read this. I read about his desire to work towards Christian unity, but I was unsure how to take that. Sometimes, when a Catholic person says "Christian," he does not mean to include the Protestants. The converse is also true, I'm afraid.

Working toward unity is one of the noblest goals with in Christianity today.

They had a special on the History Channel on how the Pope is selected. When I turned it on they were starting on about Pius XII and then went from him to the
newly elected Benedict XVI.
One myth they did manage to squash was the myth that John Paul I had been
murdered.
Turned out the poor man simply had had a bad heart condition.
