Attachments, Registration, Email online!

Postby Mithrandir » Sun Apr 17, 2005 11:04 pm

OK. After much smacking of the Database, it appears I have some good news to report. I'll combine everthing into one post here, so if someone asks, "Why isn't nnn working?" be sure to point them here. I'll make updates to this thread.

Now Online:
1. The annoying "slight problem" errors are off now. Let me know if you see any error from here out.
2. (I'm sure the most exciting for many of you) - ATTACHMENTS ARE WORKING AGAIN! I'm still not certain why vb relies on certain php functions, but whatever.
3. Email notification for Private Messages, Subscriptions and new user Reg are back online.
4. New user registration is on again.
5. CSS moved to filesystem for optimum performance. This should result in up to a 50% increase in speed for some of you. (Dial up users will notice this more, probably).

Still offline:
1. Signatures. This is actually due to bandwidth concerns, more than anything else.
2. DNS issues are not resolved. If all goes as planned, we'll have the name servers updated, so everything will function better.
3. Video Game reviews system. (Bet you forgot I was working on that one, didn't you? )

And just like that, the mighty become the mite. You know, with a bit of spell correction, that could be taken totally wrong!

OK. I'm going to need everyone's help figuring out what else is messed up, OK? Post something in the comments folder if you find a bug.

Thanks!

Glad to hear more good news. Excepting the reviews database, I think the majority of important things have been taken care of, actually (from a strictly user perspective, of course).

I noticed when I returned that people were using some extremely humoungous sigs..... this wasn't much of an issue to me, just slightly annoying having to scroll down through all that. Maybe should be some way of limiting sig size when they are running again?

Well, there's a motion on the floor to bring them back, but without graphics and limited to a few lines or so.

I don't really understand this. Why is it undesirable to have signatures? Is it sucking bandwidth? I doubt this since I host my own signatures. Is it slowing down the download time or is it messing up the database system somehow?

I would imagine that large signatures (regardless of source) do slow loading times for members with slow connections; I doubt they are too much of a drain on bandwidth.

Some people like the lack of signatures because it makes the forums look generally cleaner and streamlines discussion, I doubt many people strongly dislike the signatures themselves. However, many people (myself included) do not like massive signatures that take up numerous times more space than the posts themselves. This is not so much an issue of signatures being bad as them being used unresponsibly.

 As long as people cut down on the file size for their sigs and make sure things don't take up too much room, I don't see any reason to eliminate graphics from a signature - and the users with a slower connection can turn off signatures already, right?

I'd kinda miss having my little buttons in my sig...^_^; are you staffers still considering a line length to limit sigs to, though? Pictures aren't a problem for me, but I agree that bulky sigs are a bit of a pain.

Yeah... But there are THOUSANDS of you people. Do you have any idea how much time it would take us to police that...? We would tell people, "Don't upload a sig that's 256K or we'll break your knees." That didn't work. People just don't read the rules. If (as mave does) everyone hosted their sigs elsewhere, then we wouldn't have an issue - but not everyone will/does. At the moment, however, I haven't thrown much research time into this one, honestly. I'll see if I can set it up so that users can host but not upload graphics. I'll let you know what I come up with.

I keep forgetting how big CAA is. It's true that some ignore the rules about signatures (I might have been guilty of that before coz my signature grows sometimes  )

Eh, with that confession out of the way, can we at least request for text signatures? Pretty please? (*U*) hehe

I don't think it's possible for us to police that, either. Images are really just text, merely special text that recalls other data.

<.< >.>;; Seriously, was anyone being sarcastic here? I can't detect sarcasm very well and sometimes prefer not to. (T__T)

Anyway, I sincerely didn't really view text and images as the same thing but thanks for the explanation and consideration. *nods nods* ^_^

Oh yeah, OldPhil, I forgot to mention how grateful I am that you've got most of the things up and running! I will use the attachments for smaller files while loading the huge files at Imageshack and Photobucket. Hope that's fine with everyone.

Today around 9pm PST I had the system slow way down like it used to in the days of DB errors. Didn't get the white screen, but I did have to restart IE.

Also am still having the problems with not being able to get the rest of the internet (page not Found is all that comes up) after being on here (requires a reboot). Am I wrong in thinking it's a problem with this site?

I'm not sure how being on CAA could concevably require you to reboot your computer. You may want to try using firefox ( http://mozilla.org/firefox/ ) for a couple of days and see if that helps.
