ya it's to bad about him. But he has been in there a while. Eventually there willl be another pope. I hope that day is farther offf than it looks to be though.

Yesterday Fox News reported that he was so badl off that they gave him the last rites.

Considering his condition I wonder if they have started the process of selecting his successor.Also I wonder considering the length of his Pontificate if he had not already named his successor in his will.
Personally I doubt that he will live out the next couple weeks.

Heaven may well be the best place for him now. He has lived and served long in this life, but his earthly shell is failing. I will pray that God's will be done and that all those involved with the succession process are graced with wisdom and foresight.

He has done a lot and been a truly great pope. Indded for most of us, he is the only one we have known. Whatever happens, I pray that it will be for the best.

PS. The business of selecting the new pope will not occur until the conclave that will be called after his death. It is the cardinals, not the current pope who will decide upon his successor.

According to CNN.com, Italian media sources are reporting that the Pope has died.

EDIT: I guess the reports were unsubstantiated. They took down the Breaking News banner. So that's good.

They haven't on Yahoo, however. As of 1:43 PM Eastern time (four minutes ago), the news media is reporting the Pope has died, but it also says the Vatican will not confirm it one way or another.

well have to pray for him and for wisdom to choose the next pope. last i saw, they guy who wants to be pope next doesnt seem to be a very good choice.

The bells in rome will begin to toll when the pope dies, that's how we will know, as will the bells here at the seminary, which I haven't heard yet. I should also point out that there's a difference between last rites and the anointing of the sick, but the media tends to lump them together. I know the pope has recieved the latter, but I don't know if he has recieved the former.

I have to correct myself. The pope had indeed recieved viaticum. An earlier news story had made the mistake of confusing last rites and anointing, and I thought it was a reference to the same thing. I have no doubt that he will soon pass on into Jesus' waiting arms. Let us pray for him, and for the cardinals who will soon select his successor.

Yes, from what I understand, he could be called to heaven tonight. It all feels so unreal. The press has been predicting his imminent death for years.

The speculation is always unreliable. There's an old saying in the Church: "The one who enters the conclave the pope, leaves it a cardinal." Prayer is certainly needed that the cardinals are guided by God in their selection.

The Pope is alive now. Yesterday in an italian talk show "Porta a Porta"(door to door) was said that in USA and in other nations the tv-news told that he's already died, but is not true.
They also said that unfortunately id could be he's last night. But he's here with us now.
It's a difficult situations, I've prey for him a lot, the problem is that we prefare that he could live more years, cause he's a great man, he's a saint on the earth, but he's soffering, and if God call back to him, he should go. Maybe he's mission is complete and he'll watching us from the heaven.

The pope died at 9:37 PM.
I'm really regretful for this. I was watching tv and then the news arrive. In the studio of "porta a porta" most of people started cry.
I didn't cry, but my heart cry.

They'll convene right after the Holy Father's funeral in nine days I believe. So ends the life of the greatest pope of our time. He's done his duty, he died with grace and dignity, he's with God now so I don't feel any grief for him.

The New York Times says that the conclave usually takes place on the 10th day after the death is announced. If you're interested, this is the document that sets out the rules for how the conclave is to be run:

On the news they have a priest discussing the conclave process. Its pretty intresting. I pray that they pick a good Pope. I've been watching FOX news most of today. THey showed people around the world praying for him. It was touching. He is the only pope i've ever known.

While I myself am not Catholic, I do mourn with everyone at the passing of this great man. He spent his life helping others. I just hope he was not in much pain as he went. I heard somthing awesome tonight. I guess according to foxnews...one of his closest aides was with him at the end, he looked out a window and said Amen. His last word.
