I'm kind of ticked off right now, so I'll probably really feel stupid for writting this in about and hou (I get over things fast lol), but I think it makes for a good discusion so here goes...

Dude, okay, I'm not as into animes I was in middle school and the only manga I still read is Fruits Basket. But for SOME REASON people more this year than ever have been giving me alot of crap for it and its starting to makie me mad.

I posted this is my xanga a couple days ago, but a couple of days ago [color=Black]we had this new art project to do after we were done with the one we were currently working on. While I was still working I my project, she explained to the class that we were supposed to find a picture of a person. It had to be a real person, not a cartoon. I smiled and began to think of all the cute guys I could get a picture of. Since she had said it had to be a head-shot, I immeditally thought of one of Trevor McNevan on my computer at home. I quickly finished up my crappy art project and rushed up and handed it to my teacher and picked up the assignment sheet. Right after I picked it up, my teacher tapped me on the shoulder and said, "You like anime, currect?"
And I was like, "Uhm... kinda of."
"You draw it?"
"Yeah."
she patted me on the back like I was a little kid and said, "Well don't do any of those anime characters, okay?"
Whether or not she meant it that way, it made me feel so mad. Like she thought I was some kind of out of touch with reality anime freak. I'm sorry, I didn't know just because I drew anime characters that I was automatically a retard. I used to like anime and that's all I really know how to draw well, I can't help that.

And then today I my dad drove me to the only store in town that sells manga to get the 6th issue of FB. While I was looking for it, my dad had to comment on all the covers of the weird looking mangas and be like "Ooooh, don't you wanna read that? Haha..." and "Well THAT definitely looks like something a Christian would read!". I was laughing with him, but I told him to cut it out. He said, "I don't understand why you're into this weird anime stuff." I explained to him that not all of it was perverted and weird, there was some good stuff if you knew were to look just like anything else. He just laughed like I was telling a joke and continued to tease me. Like just because I read one manga that means I read all of them! I don't get it. ><;;;

I'm sorry that happened to you, hun. I get alot of that crap from my parents too. Just suck it up and remember they're the ignorant ones! You like what you like, who are they to tell you it's "bad" just because it's not "American". I mean FB isn't bad in any way so what's the big deal? I'm sorry. My parents are rather awkward when it comes to series like Evangelion, Hellsing, and Love Hina. At least they do let you read and watch anime/manga. I have a friend who gets grounded for renting it from the library or going on a anime site at home or at the library.

As for the Library teacher, most people don't understand it is art. During my Intro to Drawing class, I drew anime-style pictures of the people we drew (save for the nudey drawings we had to do for a grade o_0 ) . She told me to stop but I said "That's how I draw and I view anime as a actual art style".

I'm not sure I would encourage that line of think in regards to parents. It lacks the respect I hope all our members would have towards their parents, regerdless of their behavior.

What I would say:

Your teacher's comments were silly considering she ALREADY said it had to be a REAL person.

But concerning your dad: If he hurts you feelings, as he obviously has, tell him that you were offended by his comments. Tell him that you respect him, but you just wanted him to know that you were upset by his remarks. Explain what you told us! In anime, manga, TV, and movies, there's the good the bad and the ugly. You only read the good manga, just as he only watches good movie. Also, tell him that you don't demand he understand you hobbies, you just ask that he please respect them. Afterall, your dad probably has hobbies that you could pick on. (I, being a girly-girl, CANNOT understand my dad's obsessions with golf. I mean, playing it-- perhaps. But WATCHING IT!? I just don't get it.) Dropping some very subtle biblical reference about fathers not provoking their children, if done in the right tone, might not be out of line, either.

gah, i get stuff like that too. im not into sports, and the idea of watching teams run up and down the field passing a ball does not really excite me like i should. so, i really dont click with my dad much, since hes a sports nut. thank God there is the medium of computers we can at least converse on.

kids at my college are like, anime? what the heck. somebody said, ooh, your beltbuckles pretty neat. what is it? i explained it was the NERV logo from EVA, and anime i like and got the whole, "your 20 and you like cartoons?!" look. simular instances in random classes, since i like to intragrate anime into my design works in school. then when they get ready to knock it, you notice that the stuff they're interested and made designs for just plain sucks. yah, make your design the camel cigarettes logo. thats reeeeal cool.

they most likely knock it cause they've never seen it or dont have the brainpower to comprehend the awesome storylines. but i totally understand the frustration towards people when they knock something you like and dont even give you a chance to say why you like it. suckage.

You might not need to cry, but tell him that you're dead serious. Him teasing you that way causes you to stumble (if it causes you to disrespect him then it IS a stumbling block, imho.)

yeah, teachers are pretty random. sometimes they come and kick some faces, othertimes they just dont pay attention to anything. in my case, my proffessor already didnt like the kid, so she made an example of the kid for about 3 minutes. he'll think twice before he gets on his cellphone in class, and also rethink before being a big tool. to this day, that professor is still my favorite ^_^

I hate art classes in general due to my experience in my younger years. The art teachers I met were close-minded as opposed to being creative as they proclaimed themselves to be. Everytime I drew something anime-related, some classmates would snicker at it or teachers would frown. Ironic as it sounds, I don't necessarily get a good grade in art classes. I found myself forced to only doing portraits (real human faces), painting sceneries, or whatever they deemed as art. To tell the truth, I regard such classical artstyles as snobbish (no offence, art majors). Just my personal opinion, which would most likely change as I get to know more open-minded and respectful art students.


A little OT: Get this. There was once I decided to do something different with the default pattern my teacher told us to use in my sewing class. Did you know what my teacher did when she saw the slightly modified pattern which I worked my butt off the whole night before? "Oh, shame on you! You must have asked your mother to do this for you. I won't accept this." I was SUPER peeved. So much for creativity, bah.

Point is, you're not alone. I got teased very badly for liking animation or comics as well. I was told to "Grow up. Cartoons are for kids." I don't care what ppl say anymore. I'll be drawing comics until I'm on my deathbed. So there.

LOL! Yeah, that's a good idea... doesn't work with my dad though. When I cry he acts like I'm a baby and tells me to grow up. So I avoid that haha. I don't think he can grasp the consept that he only had TWO BOYS and the other kid was a GIRL.

Dude ikr. Like other people on this thread have been saying, its like they don't consider anime a form of "art". Sort of like my english teacher last year and the year before that wouldn't let me or any of my friends read graphic novels. I think its because they don't want to let their world of "art" and "literature" to change with the changing of our culture.

wow I would HATE it if my art teacher did that >.< But I'm lucky b/c theres a rather big group of anime people at my school, many of them who are upperclassmen who have been in her class before. My friend Natalia draws both anime and realistic style very well, and my art teacher commented to me once about how she loved how well Natalia can do character development in her comic pages. I just got off really lucky with an open-minded teacher. Like.. when I wasn't in her class I saw her and showed her one of my anime drawings to get her opinion on the folds and she was like "Oh you like anime too?" But she didn't say it like she was looking down on the style.

On another note, our class visited a graphic arts studio one girl's dad ran called Illustrated Alaskan Moose. They did alot of cartoon designs, like for board games like candy land and leapfrog books and stuff. That's all cartoons, but they do this stuff for a job and no one looks down on them for it. And *gasp* they're all adults too. I don't think cartoons are any less of an art style than anything else. Thats like saying abstract isn't art b/c sometimes its just a bunch of lines or something.
