I don't know if this' in the right section, but here it goes... >_>

I'm graduating from HS this year, and I'm really considering a Computer science/engineering major. What sort of jobs are out there these days for people who want computers in their future?

I really havent done much with computers. The most I do is work in Photoshop, but it doesnt take you very far in graphics. My mom told me that she took a programming class when she was in college, and she said I'd really enjoy it. I might be doing that.

be careful. Don't be so quick to entering a major. If you want to go into comuters, go into something you already have knowledge on. Like you said you know a big about graphic design. College courses will help you learn more about photoshop.

Well, the problem there would be graphic design in general isn't as thick on the old resume as computer science is. I'd say go full bore into one major. Be sure to take other clases though, and don't be afraid to change majors (said the man who crammed four years of college into 6). Do you like math? If so, comp sci is likely a good fit. There's lots of good jobs available if you can focus on 3D rendering engines.

If you don't like math, do you like "running the show?" If so, you might want to check out MIS. It's mostly business with an emphasis on running technology. It's a pretty lucrative job oppertunity.

Let me know if you have specific questions, OK?

Yeah computers can actually go pretty deep since you can go strictly into computer engineering (Although you BETTER love a lot of math). Or you can go into programming (There is maintence and object-oriented), databases, networking, security and systems administration. Like oldphilosopher said, it can even be intertwined with business, which is what I am doing.

Or you can go with multimedia like commercial art or computer graphics. Just a word of advice, if you want to make money(Which is not the goal of all), then don't go strictly into web designing, it is fun, but trust me, web designers are a dime a dozen. Heck, many of us here on CAA do it just for kicks.

There are many, many jobs available although they will depend on what you want to study and at what level. The focus for example is quite different if you go to a community college or a university. One will be more applied, the other will offer more theory although you can explore more advanced topics. I studied electrical engineering, and my younger brother is finishing his computer science degree (which I'd once considered as well).

For those who are curious I'm a student member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.
