Revelations 22:18-19

Talk about anything in here.

Revelations 22:18-19

Postby Hitokiri » Wed Mar 09, 2005 4:30 pm

"For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book." Revelations 22:18-19

When you think about that...that's kinda freaky. Sucks to be a cult starter.

It reminds me that God's law is absolute and his Word is the Law. i find it strangley comforting.

this verse is the reason why I don't put much stock in all this stuff about the bible being changed around and mistranslated on purpose.

Exactly. Who would want to rewrite even the smallest portion of the Bible when you have those words glaring up at you? I LOVE that book. You can get lost in it if you're not careful! and that verse particularly just sends shivers up my spine. Awesome! ^_^

That is new international version. THe funny thing: I just read that yesterday and felt the same way. God pointed it out ot me to bring me up about this Mormon dude in my class. It just makes me know that that was the last: no more books should be added. *Sigh of relief*

Sounds to me like a hopeless textual abuse; he elaborates on what he is saying by stating; "this prophecy". Has it occured to you because of the fact that the Book of Revelation is such a tapestry of interconnected symbolism, that an interpolator's hand at work in the Book could change a vast deal and cause a great deal of Christian doctrine for centuries, even millenia, simply by changing details. I never once throughout every reading of the Book of Revelation I had ever done found a compelling reason to apply this threat to any more than the vision itself.

So basically you're saying Revelations is not God breathed book" The books of the Bible were chosen by God for a reason. It's either believe in the whole book or not in t at all. Th ebible is God breathed, every book.

I think what he's saying is that you shouldn't take Revellation lightly. I had trouble reading the last sentence's structure though.

Quite the opposite, that because the Book of Revelation is YHWH breathed, and because quite more than others, Revelation can be totally screwed up by tampering with its symbolism or deleting passages, the Book issues a most harsh warning against tampering with it. What I am complaining about is that I think applying this most harsh threat in the way you do is an abuse of the Book of Revelation's intention for the passage.

New International Version wrote:I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
New Living Translation wrote:And I solemnly declare to everyone who hears the prophetic words of this book: If anyone adds anything to what is written here, God will add to that person the plagues described in this book. And if anyone removes any of the words of this prophetic book, God will remove that person's share in the tree of life and in the holy city that are described in this book.
[quote="The Message"]I give fair warning to all who hear the words of the prophecy of this book: If you add to the words of this prophecy, God will add to your life the disasters written in this book]
Indeed, it does sound like it's talking about Revelation rather than the entire Bible. Of course, don't go around changing the Bible either.

I think this thread is outliving its usefulness, and we strongly discourage theological debates in any case because of their historical problems.
