Texan members, I am disappointed

Not a single one of you (us?) posted about today being Texas Independence Day! If we were still a country, this would be a national holiday. For shame on all you all.

Seriously though, today is indeed Texas Indy Day; to celebrate we sang "Deep in the Heart of Texas" at church. XD

Now I'm curious, does anyone know what happened today? Is it:
A- the alamo fell
B- we marched on mexico
C- the texas declaration of independence was signed
D- Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna at San Jacinto (aka, buffalo bayou here in Houston)

The answer is:

a-the alamo fell- Well the alamo fell in the winter, so it can't be it.
B- we marched on mexico- I don't remember any march on Mexico. Texas was part of Mexico, so the people of Texas was already in Mexico at the time.

D- Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna at San Jacinto (aka, buffalo bayou here in Houston)- hmmm, not remember what the day or the date was for when Santa Anna was defeated.

So, I go with C- the texas declaration of independence was signed.

I hope you didn't mind having someone trying to answer the question that doesn't live in Texas.

But how many of us have the time or the calendar to look at the calendar and see what Holiday it is being acknowledged today?

Well, CAA does have a calendar. However, our head Texiconian forgot to put this very important date on there.

Kind of strange that many (most, all?) of Texas heroes are foreigners. Sam Houston was born in Virginia, Davey Crockett was born in Tennessee, Jim Bowie was born in Kentucky, William Travis born in South Carolina, and even Stephen Austin (Father of Texas) was born in Virginia. The only true hero born there that I can think of right off hand is our very own Ashley. Or was she???

Texas MythBusters:

1. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Socrates were not born in Texas. Nor did they sleep in all those beds in all those different hotels.

2. Texas is not as large as it appears on maps. Texas border security are instructed to tear down other state border signs. So if it appears you have been driving all day, remember, there is no such town as Los Angeles, Texas.

3. Texas population is not as large as claimed. My wife received a lifetime teaching certificate for Texas schools. Therefore, we are being forced to remain Texas citizens for life even though we reside in South Carolina. We and millions of others are being held hostage. Because of this fact, the population of Texas is not really 893 Billion.

4. Buffalo Wings are not a product of the Texas State bird. Nor are tumbleweeds an endangered species.

5. The bluebonnet is actually yellow. The Texas Highway Department sends crews out to paint the flowers each year. This State flower was named by Rosco P. Crenshaw who was colorblind. Rather than admit a mistake, Texas will keep painting.

Texas originally extended through Oklahoma, New Mexico, and parts of Arizona. They chopped us down when we joined. Why? Who knows.

Texas is so big, some cities in the west (El Paso, Laredo, etc.) are closer to at least 3 other state capitols than Austin.

No building in Austin is permitted to block the view of the capitol buildings.

There's pretty much a holiday every day of the year. It'd be irritating to open Windows and have a box pop up that says, "Today is National Jump In a Puddle Day!" Yes, it IS a real holiday. I think it was like three weeks ago or something.

I have relatives in Texas. Maybe I should go there someday. But that would require free time and money, both of which are being consumed by another, more important thing.

College? Yes, that answer will suffice. ^^;;

I consider that more of a sad statement of local gov't interference...

Texas originally extended through Oklahoma, New Mexico, and parts of Arizona. They chopped us down when we joined. Why? Who knows.

Oklahoma was Indian Territory, and actually AZ/NM were a combined territory. Indeed, in 1837 Mexico still owned it and accused the US govt of promoting rebellion there. The US acquired the land after the War with Mexico.

A few more (real) facts:
When Texas broke away from Mexico, it wanted to join the US, but was denied over the issue of slavery (forbidden by Mexico, but the law was ignored by the American settlers). It was not allowed into the US until 1845 (Independence in 1836 IIRC). The reolution annexing Texas was of questionable Constitutionality and signed by a lame duck president shortly before leaving office (March-- about 9 months passed between the annexation signing.

Texas was given the option of joining as one or up to 5 seperate states (which also had to do with the issue of slavery).

Prior to the war with Mexico, the borders were still in dispute over whether the Rio Grande or the Nueces River.


Of course, before you call for my head, remember I'm a bit cynical coming from a state that was probably an example of the most flagrant theft of land ever
