Me, not really. In fact, I'm not even into manga that much myself (I don't know why I'm here anymore). A lot of older comics fans believe that there has been nothing good after the Silver Age (60's).

the only western comics i like are comic strips. Like calvin and hobbes, the farside, dilbert, etc

Not Really but Devil May Cry is going to have it's own Comic Book if it's not already out.

It's out, but I haven't got it yet(I plan too eventually). Sadly, Dreamwave(the company behind the comics) is no longer in business. They also produced Mega Man and Transformers comics.

I love the Xmen comics and The Spiderman.

I'm subcribed to Spectacular Spider-Man(which is ending for good soon), Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel Age/Adventures Spider-Man, and New Avengers(which now has Spider-Man in it). I'm a bit of a Spider-Man nut.

I believe they're only partially right. The writing wasn't too good back then, and neither was the art(IMO). However, today's comics are alot less suitable for younger readers. They also seem to have an extremely liberal bent(Captain America doesn't say much good about America anymore). There have also been some pretty bad stories as of late. The "Sins Past" story arc in Amazing Spider-Man is one much talked about bad one. In it, Spidey finds that his old girlfriend, Gwen Stacy, had a one-night stand and fathered kids with Norman Osborn(the Green Goblin). This utterly enraged fans(including me). Gwen was always meant to be the pure and decent type(as stated bt Stan Lee). Currently, Marvel is trying to get rid of the story as fast as it can with a new story arc called "Sins Remembered" in Spectacular Spider-Man.

On the flip-side, New Avengers has some good stuff going for it.

I used to for time, but I can't afford to go out an buy comic books these days. In other words I'm pretty much restricted to free web comics (some of which are very good).

However, in general I've found western comics to be more creative and innovative in both their artistic styles and story-telling. This is particularly true of the more "non-mainstream" titles that are out there. DC's Vertigo house did publish some pretty good ones too though.

As for myself, I never got into comics to where I read them as a kid, but when it comes down to it I like Batman (hero without superhero powers; I always thought that was way better) and Spiderman (for his wit, even if I'm terribly arachnaphobic).

No, they are far too lacking story content and overall structure for my liking. Except Batman comics, some of them were good. But I feel they are the mass drivel of the comic world- good, sometimes great art, but lacking in originality and just about everything else.

My western comics tastes are more Dilbert, Tintin, Calvin and Hobbes, the Far Side and others. They seem to have more thought put into each frame, than most DC and Marvel comics have in a complete book.

I've been a huge lover of western comics, even before I was introduced to anime. So there's a whole bunch that I like, most notably Sandman, WAtchmen, Batman, Spiderman (John Romita Jr.! Woo!) and (enough with the "man"s) Nightwing and Anarky. And yes, I adore the blessed comic strips suc as Calvin and Hobbes, Dilbert, Boondocks, Bloom County and more.

W4J, I think it's a little too simplistic to shove all of western comics into the "lacking originality" category. There are intelligent and well plotted western comics out there along with the horribly stupid ones. The same goes for anime--there's the incredibly terrific, the incredibly mediocre, and the incredibly lame all coming out of the same country. Please don't let your experience with poorly written westerns judge the whole spectrum of comics. And besides, Marvel and DC arent the only white people who write comics, so chill.

How's that going? I have a little over a hundred from the 80s and early 90s, and I'm wondering how much they go for(not that I'll ever sell them....I'm a bit of a pack rat).

Neither am I. They seem more geared toward the Dawson's Creek crowd.

Same thing over and over, either it's robots, or demons, or magic, or high school love stories, or chasing down criminals.

I wonder if the Japanese have the equivalent of superhero comics(flashy costume, secret identity, goes around stopping random crimes). I've seen alot of anime and glanced at a few manga, but I've never seen anything like that. The only thing that came close was a manga version of Spider-Man.

i haven't read other than newspaper strips any recent western comics (and by recent i mean by around 4 decades XD) my dad saved his comics from when he was a kid. so i grew up reading Archie and the gang, Josie and the Pussycats, a couple Superman comics, and my favorite... Tarzan comics that retold the Edgar Rice Burroughs story in comic form, and the fact that the Tarzan comics had pretty good artwork didn't hurt either.

personally, i like graphic novels and comic books, or at least the ones with good artwork and storylines. don't really know why, though, lol, must be because i grew up on them. but i can see where the dislike is coming from.

With movies like Spider-man and Spider-man 2,Elektra and Daredevil and
a proposed Fantastic Four it does look like Marvel is ahead of DC for the time being in popularity.Although that might change once the new Batman and Superman films hit the theatres.

I haven't read too many comics, but I really do like most of the graphic novels I've seen so far, apart from a few which I intensely disliked. Can't remember their names, though... mostly superman and batman stuff. Go team-ups! *Goofy smile*
Also, astrocity comics rock! I've only seen perhaps two of their stuff, but so far they seem really good.

I pretty much read most any comic that I can get a hold of (manga included.) I don't buy any comics but mangas but I still read lots of graphic novels and comic books when I can. As for some of my favs, Spiderman, Tintin (rawks!), Far Side, Close To Home, Batman has some really good ones. As for artists I'd say that Alex Ross is probably the best out there. He's AMAZING...One of the best artists I've ever seen (and I've seen many.) I read his stuff just for the art.

I've only just started reading comics and stuff, but then again, here in australia its rather slim pickings when it comes to comics/anime etc. Im into transformers, marvel, but have been trying to find others.

What are the best graphic novels (marvel etc?). I haven't the faintest idea where to look. Any suggestions?

Welcome to CAA Rysing Fury! The Batman, Hush graphic novels are good. Almost anything by Alex Ross is good. Also if your looking for christian comics look at Archangels. Most christian comics stink but Archangels is really awesome and on par with all the mainstream stuff.

I'm one of those comic book geeks, too. I collect mostly DC comics - Superman, Batman, Batgirl, Teen Titans, Outsiders, JLA, Birds of Prey, Flash, Robin, Nightwing, Catwoman, JSA, Doom Patrol, a few others.

Right now, I'd say Batman is one of the best written, most compelling titles out there.
