I got to go snowboarding

Postby Saint Kevin » Mon Feb 21, 2005 1:29 pm

I finally went for my first trip of the season (pathetic that it was in February, I know). I went to Copper Mountain. It was a blast. I went with the International Friends Club (a Christian organization). We had people there representing many countries, like Russia, Taiwan, Tanzania, Mexico, Eritrea, Venezuela, and the Philippines.

It was awesome. I only boarded blues, and 1 black that was way too steep for me. Bumps are fun, but I still suck at them. Also, even though the group you see was very large, I didn't see a whole lot of them on the slopes (they were almost all beginners, and couldn't keep up with me, heh).

For the curious, I'm the third from the right in the back row, with the yellow collar of my Michigan jacket showing.

So, does anyone else ski or ride?

Yeah, you should try snowboarding if you get the chance. It's really hard the first time or two because you fall a lot, but you learn pretty quickly. At least, I did, but I was transitioning from skiing, and the principles are the same, so that probably helped.

Sorry to hear that. Honestly, the 'snow plow' aka 'pizza wedge' technique is only for those just starting out, so that they have an easy, sure-fire way to stop. The 'parallel ski' aka 'hockey stop' technique should be used as soon as possible, as it is much more effective, and lets you ski even the toughest terrain (after much practice). Still, if you are willing to fall a lot, you can become a great skier.

Wait...they have hills in Kansas?
Seriously though, that would be pretty cool. I had a great time with the group from the other day, but if you get a group too large, people lose one another easily, and you can waste your day waiting at the bottom for slower people to finish. That's the reason I only got 6 runs in (I'm usually good for about 10, maybe more).

Still, we got to share our testimonies, talk about God, and discover that 'Silent Night' can be sung together in at least 6 languages without difficulty, among other things.

It would be great to have some CAAers to ski/board with, but I hope they are a little bit better than Shoo, or I might have to leave them in the dust.

I wanted to go snowboarding with my friend Ryan this past January but unfortunately it didn't work out. The snow is leaving most places by now...so I'll have to wait until next winter.

It sure did sound like you had some fun and fantastic picture by the way.

I just went skiing yesterday myself. Quite the addict.

Yeah! I just love skiing. ^_^

We brought our Youth Group out to Ski this past weekend.
Every one had fun, but there is this one German foreign exchange student who comes now and then and Boy could he ski!!!

Him and I had a blast carving up the mountain. I think he was glad that I could ski, because most every one else in our group is at an intermediate level.

*sigh*

Skiing is just great. If only I had the cash to do it more often.

Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
- J. Hudson Taylor
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

I hear you Kaji, it is pretty expensive to ski. I recently made friends with somebody on the volunteer ski patrol however, and she loves her job (even though it pays absolutely nothing). She works on the weekends, earns herself lots of free comp. tickets to give away (hopefully a few to me here soon if all goes well :p), and she's gotten to be a lot better skier.

I know what you mean about having a group that can't really ski. My group was entirely beginners, so I didn't see a whole lot of them. Still, it was fun, and maybe next season I'll get a season pass around Christmas or something and go snowboarding a lot.

Still can't really do the terrain parks or anything, but I admire those that can, even if they are a bit crazy. I did get better at boarding through trees though, although it's really hard to control your speed on narrow paths like that. I'm working on both though, and maybe someday I'll catch up to John and Kaji ;).

BTW...how's the skiing up where you are John?
