Stupid Silly People

Customer: "Do you sell Mac OS X for Windows?"



Tech Support: "May I ask what operating system you are running today?"
Customer: "A computer."



Once I overheard the guy in the tech support cubicle next to mine patiently explain:
Tech Support: "No, sir...clicking on 'Remember Password' will NOT help you remember your password."



Customer: "One of my friends gave me an ImageWriter printer and this keyboard. He said he gave me all the cables, but I can't figure out how to connect them. Am I missing something?"
Tech Support: "Well, a computer would help."
Customer: "You mean this keyboard isn't a word processor?"
Tech Support: "No ma'am, its just an input device."
Customer: "Then I need to buy a computer, right?"
Tech Support: "Yes."
Customer: "Do you think I'll need a monitor, too?"


Tech Support: "Ok, ma'am, I need you to do a ctrl-alt-del."
Customer: "How do I do that?"
Tech Support: "Push and hold 'ctrl' and 'alt' at the same time, and then hit 'delete'."
Customer: "Where are those?"
Tech Support: (explains the location of the keys)
Customer: "Nothing happened."
Tech Support: "Try again."
Customer: "Still nothing."

A minute or two later....

Customer: "Should I turn my computer on? Would that help?"
Tech Support: "Yeah, it might."

Man... I think I know practically nothing about computers but this makes me feel smart. :grin:
Euuuhh... tech support. I have immense respect for those guys (well, in theory. I've never really spoken to or met many other than when my Dad yells questions down the hall to me when he's on the phone to them).
Trying to explain things to computer-illiterate people over the phone without seeing the computer, or the person, or so many things... that sounds frustrating to say the least.
<Edit>Customer: "Do I need a computer to use your software?"

Once a customer called my bro and asked whether you should hook up the keyboard and mouse into the computer or the monitor.

You know, after reading about ~1% of this website's contents, I start to feel really sorry for computer technical support ppl. It's quite funny at first, but eventually, I start to feel the frustration kicking in. :sweat:

I understand that. My grandma calls me everytime she has a problem. Its really frustrating. I son't really know a lot about computers. Did hook up some DVD and CD-RW drives with a friend. and my cousin and I put the memory card in my grandmas computer. My grandma thinks I know more then I do. -_-

Same here. I used to TA a linear algebra course to first-year undergrads, and came across a lot of the same sort of basic stupidity.

True story:
a fellow TA once got so frustrated with his section not listening to his explanations and generally not paying attention in class, that before he handed out the day's quizzes, he wrote out the full solutions on the black board and left them there. The class average did not change.
