What do you do when you need a break?

Postby Sparrowhawk » Sat Feb 05, 2005 12:04 pm

Everyone has times when they just feel the need to crash, whether it be problems at work or school, a tragedy, stress with friends, or life seems like its just a whirlwind going way too fast. What do you all do when you just need a break from it all? I tend to take some time out to just sit and think things out while maybe doing some reading, then remember what my destination is at the end of it all. So what do you all do when you just need a break?

"The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."

I tend to sit back, listen to soothing music, and either talk to friends or watch some silly episodes of my favorite anime series. If that fails, I whip out the Bible and have some extra quiet time. ^_^

I put on music that will calm me, then go driving around Austin. I mean, Austin is a very diverse city in the sense of natural scenery or whatever- the atmosphere is not like many cities. Very calming aside from the rush hour traffic .

I listen to my "homework music" which is mostly acoustic folk type Christian Contemporary, lie back, and do my math or physics homework. Honest to goodness, I find it very soothing.

I do one of four things:

1. Go to sleep
2. Put on some AWESOME dance music and just pretend like I'm a dance star and dance around my apartment (I can't believe I posted that for however many hundreds of people to see)
3. Pop in my DDRMax 2 game and play
4. Take a road trip and disappear for a day or two
5. Go to the local park and just walk and talk with God, actually listening with my HEART.

Rot my brain out by either creating my own anime/other series on dvd marathons or losing myself in an rpg.

I usually play video games. Games like Tetris, or, oddly enough, violent shooters like Halo 2 are relaxing, and help ease tension. Nothing to beat stress like being mesmerized by falling blocks, or killing Nazis or aliens. Strangely enough, watching cooking shows (or actually cooking) has the same effect, as long as the clean up waits until later.

If I really, really need a break from everything, I'll take a nap. That almost sounds like a plan...

I used to just sleep whenever I was depressed or stressed out. It offered some mental relief and it usually allowed my body to calm down too. I wake up with a clear mind most of the time.

But that's when I was constantly sleep-deprived. Falling asleep is more difficult now.

I usually just deal with it until night when I can get to sleep. I'll try to get my mind off of it or do some task like drawing or journal-writing, but that still allows me to think/dwell. Prayer isn't usually my first response to feeling depressed, unfortunately. But eventually I do pray.

I prefer to talk with friends when I'm upset, but phone and internet limits make that very difficult and it usually isn't an option (I don't know anyone here my age, so face-to-face friendships are non-existant).

Yeah, I just deal with it most of the time... DDR, listening to music, video games and other things are distractions, but not very good ones. Mostly, I wait it out until I feel better.

Heart of Sword's Rhapsody

Money, get away
Get a good job with good pay and you're okay
And all and all you're just another brick in the wall
Shoutin’ in the street gonna take on the world some day
But Bismallah will not let me go
Because I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union's been on strike
Bright eyes burning like fire
And exposing every weakness
However carefully hidden by the kids

Who will love a little Sparrow
Who's traveled far and cries for rest
Spare him his life from this monstrosity

I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all
And if the band youre in starts playing different tunes
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you!

I take a walk around my campus. Of course, since i have nowhere to place my books (as I have no car), I end up walking everywhere with an extremely disproportionally heavy backpack which aggravates my scoliosis and consequently have a hurt back later on. But for the moment it helps.

I go to my piano and pound the living daylights out of it. After a few minutes of random keys being hit I slow down and start playing real music. If that doesn't work I go into my own little world and stay there untill I relize that it will all be over soon and I will hopefully not have to see it till a long time later.

Yes, I do that too. Talking to other, happier people really calms me down.

I also write poetry (see in writing section), or I play Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, which is a fantastic game.

Or watch TV, preferably my fav. anime, but it don't come on too often.
I am unique, just like everyone else.

Although I wouldn't exactly call it relaxing, I find that practicing [music] is often helpful in relieving tension. Unfortunately, when I am particularly busy, the amount of time I spend practicing usually decreases.

it depends on the phase I'm going through I have about 3 of them

Art Phase: I usually make my own manga or create about 15,000 characters by the end of the day XD

Writing Phase: I'll either read about 5 books in 3 days or continue writing one of my storys that'll most likely never get finished

Music stage: this is the one I'm usually in, I'll practice alot on my guitar or my drums, or my piano and my singing and write a bunch of songs and listen to alot of worship music and talk to my dad about differant stuff realting to music

*looks at what she just wrote* . . . . yeah I'm verry right brained XD;;

If I happen to get too stressed I usually take some time to talk to God about it, Get a big hug from my wife, and keep on.

I find that I have learned some of the best lessons of my life from tough situations, and though getting away from it feels nice for a little while, taking the problem head on with God and finally bringing it to a conclusions is far more rewarding…

Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
- J. Hudson Taylor
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.
