MS Gundam Wing...Good/Bad versions

Postby olorc » Sat Feb 05, 2005 4:18 pm

So I was on ebay hoping to get MS Gundam Wing Complete Operations today (that would be the complete series if you didn't know what "Complete Operations" meant :brow: ) and I found the complete series from a price range of about $20-$70. There were tons of different covers and titles of these things too. Does anyone out there own the MS Gundam Wing series? If so, are you happy with what you have could you please describe it. (By this I mean how many discs it is, what the cover looks like, if the subs/dubbs are up to snuff...stuff like that). :)
Thanks a lot this would really help me out. :thumb:

This is what each dvd's look like.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/series/-/251/dvd/ref=pd_serl_dvd/104-6625317-8173502

What the box looks like the box looks like for Complete Operations

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001BMMG8/qid=1107651612/br=1-1/ref=br_lf_d_1//104-6625317-8173502?v=glance&s=dvd&n=497656

I have mostly have watch the Gundam Wing in dub and think its a good cast that they used, but I did switch over one time and listen to the sub and was done very well.

The box set only has the ten disk from the Gundam Wing TV. You will have to buy the Gundam Wing OVA/Movie by its self and I don't think the box has room for the that dvd.

Ebay has a ton of anime bootlegs on it. What you're looking at is most likely bootlegs and there are several ways to tell.

Different looking covers and look cheap
If it's coming from Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan, etc.
If it's under $100 for a complete boxset and not used it's probably a bootleg.
Has 3 to 4 discs
If it doesn't have an official anime distributor logo on it in your case it should have Bandai Entertainment on it.
If it has Chinese subtitles on it
An FX logo, they're the biggest anime bootleg company

I would not recommend looking for anime on ebay unless you know exactly what you're looking for. Most people who buy bootlegs have no idea they're doing so. Go to an official store and look at what the actual legit boxset/volumes look like. Here's two I'll leave you with two sites that have the cheapest legit anime I've been able to find http://www.overstock.com and http://www.bestprices.com

This may be too late, but I purchased this copy(for $20, I think):

7-discs: 6 show discs + EW.
No region.
Cover pic of the Zero and the Epyon dueling.

It's bootleg, yes, but it's of extremely high caliber...one of the best pirates I've seen. The official version can be bought off Amazon for over $100, I think.

Doesn't negate the fact that the money is not getting to the people who created the show.

I've got the whole series, but they're bootlegged. You can tell, 'cause the subtitles are kinda funny, they're not consistent, and this webpage or email address pops up on the bottom of the screen every now and then.

Hmm, I hated the series, but I got the boxed set legit which I think was about $199 when I got it (new).

It *is* "The Complete Operations" and it has 10 DVDs in individual cases (the one's you'd buy individually at the store). The set I have can be found here.

Buying used from Amazon though should require some caution. I've heard of some people being sold bootleg sets passed off as the real thing.

Oh, and Endless Waltz is not included in the set.

What does the cover look like? I'ld like to know what to avoid.

Orlorc what they're talking about is a bootleg. I told you any complete anime series running in the $20-$40 are bootlegs, no doubt about it. I said boxes with the FX logo are bootlegs and the one they're talking about is the FX version. There is one legit version and this is what it looks like.

If it doesn't look exactly like this it is a bootleg.

I got mine off Ebay for around $30. Again, though, it was a pirate. (by FX) If you're wanting to support the makers of Gundam, then you'll want to check out the Amazon one Yojimbo put up above me.

For one why would you not want to support the creators of the show? Comeon now...don't buy a bootleg just because you don't want to spend the cash. Save up and buy the legit version you're only giving money to thieves. There's no justification to buy a bootleg, these people spend years and countless hours to make these series. Then some thief in a country where copyright lawas are lax, i.e. Taiwan or Hong Kong, makes a cheap copy and sells it on ebay for $25, then either ignorant people or people who don't care buy them up. That's low and someone buying a bootleg so they can save $80 is not helping the situation. Heck you might as well just give money to a guy so he can go steal a video from a store for ya. And it's only hurting the anime industry in the end.

None taken.

Please don't take this the wrong way...I'm simply trying to provide you with information as to the quality and price of the bootleg version so you can make your own decision. I applaud your choice to save up and get the official DVDs. I only wish I had been able to scratch together enough $$$ to buy the legit version.

Everything Yojimbo has been saying in this thread is 100% accurate, so you won't go wrong following his advice. Hope you get a bunch of fun out of the greatest anime series of all time. :thumb:

I also want to point out that I didn't know the FX set was bootleg until I did some research after I had purchased it. I've learned alot about pirated anime since then, and I would do things differently I could turn back time. But...

Thanks and I apologize if I seemed testy there it just seemed like nobody cared that they were bootlegs. I also fell into the trap about a year ago when I bought Cowboy Bebop The Perfect Sessions bootleg. I like most people thought it was just a good deal but after I had already paid for it I started checking into it and found out they were fake. Now I didn't go and destroy it or anything, heck they already got my money, but I have bought half of the legit volumes and plan to buy the rest.

I mean not only do bootlegs steal from the creators of our beloved anime, but they also when it comes down to it probably fund illicit organizations (i.e. Asian mafia rings) activities like extortion and prostitution. The practice is really disgusting when you think about it.
