I attend, as a few of us do, a very small private school having only 150 highschoolers. Until very recently, the only Japanese animation or manga they had heard of was Pokemon. It was a very sad time for me- my only source of anime/manga was my older brother. 
But times have changed. I am on a crusade- a crusade to bring my anime/manga to the masses (if you could call them that) of my high school! I proudly bring my W-Juliet and Inuyasha mangas to school, and those who stare get a wonderfully informative explanation about manga (after being beaten over the head for staring, of course). Now, there are at least five people in my high school who actually follow an anime/manga series. I'm so proud!

Wow! You seem to be pretty like me! Live in Florida (though I'm in the northern part), go to a small private school (mine's Christian though ^^)with about 150 high-schoolers, barely anybody knows about manga or anime (except for pokemon-I think most everybody in my area at least knows of that).... But thankfully my main group of friends that I hang out with like manga (there's four of us together).
This year is a bit different than the others because I know of two other people who like manga/anime-one 6th grader and an 8th grader. When we had our scholastic book fair, they announced over the intercom that they had the 'long awaited learn to draw manga book', and it was funny because the a) book wasn't that great b) I personally knew that the person announcing it probably has no idea about manga other than it has pictures and c) no one (other than the 5 people I knew of at least) liked manga or knew of it. When it was announced, my class kind of was like 'what the heck?'.
It was funny, to me at least.
Unlike you, VioletEyedCat, I'm pretty low key about manga. I don't bring it to school, and it feels weird to talk about it there even with my friends sometimes. I encourage you for your efforts and courage though

Well...considering my school has roughly 44,000 students enrolled so I'm gussing thier are a few who like manga and anime.
(iin my high school, we had around 400 students in my senior class so I'm used to a large amount of students)
There used to be a anime/manga club but this year, it's the Japanese Club but all they basically do is sit around, watch anime and sadly, hentai. So that's why I don't join. My friends and I are trying to get a Christian Anime/manga group going bu tthat's slow starting.
I will bring manga time to time since I have at times, 3 hours to kill before some classes. :l

I do know a few people in my school who like manga and anime, but not many. Sheesh, am I supposed to know all 1400 of us?(or is it them?) I do bring manga pretty regularly to school, especially Rurouni Kenshin. I have seen some bringing in SHonen Jump or having an anime blanket when it's cold. So, it's not comepletely dead here, I jsut think too many people go for the WRONG anime. :sigh:

I'm a demon worshipper to the Christians at my school for reading manga.
I know someone who came up to me and said, very confidently, "Anime's a sin."
I told her, "It's the same as movies. There are bad movies, but that doesn't make all movies bad. There are bad anime, but that doesn't make all anime bad."
That pretty much made her stop.

They take for granted that the general impression that people pass around as the undeniable truth is correct. So. darn. sad. I have a few of these people in my extended family. I love them. I just wish I could make them see how silly it makes you look and how hurtful you can be (I was told by a relative that I should burn Fruits Basket. It made me want to cry too, Koko-chan.)

I don't know how many people at my school are into manga - we have almost 2k students - but I'm not very optimistic. Manga is still just beginning to come to NZ.
However - at least we have 'Amargeddon' - an expo which contains video games, manga, movies, Star Wars... all that sort of stuff - and it has a cosplay and anime, possibly manga, so at least it's something. I'm hoping to go this year and enter in the art comp.
A lot of Christians have different views on things - e.g. alchohol. Some totally disagree, others believe it's good in moderation, etc. There's some vital things we all agree on *points upward*. So I know for myself I have to work on patience toward my family regarding things they don't agree with but I have no problem about (for example, CSI and anime) .
Still, I hope as manga and anime get more popular people will, as HoS pointed out, look at it like any other media - able to be used for good and bad.
Back on topic - we're actually doing a study of different 'Sci-Fi' examples in Multimedia Studies class this year - and one of the topics is manga/anime. So manga might be starting to get more popular at my school.

Well, I wouldn't say manga at my school is 'popular' But if you venture around the school around 4:00pm, you see kids reading manga behind science and math textbooks...There are people who read manga at my school...but I guess they don't want others seeing them reading it...I don't blame em, since a lot of the kids think manga=p0rn...-_-
But you know, I'm totally oblivious to the low status manga have and carry them and read them everywhere (not during class of course)
But a good thing about anime/manga not being popular is that you won't have to worry about your anime/manga being stolen...^^;

Heh...my school is a fairly small catholic elementary school. We have like 400 students. Out of all those people I only know about 2-3 others who like anime. Ot makes me very sad...I mean, no one watches it, but they make fun of us for reading anime or watching manga. If I get a new manga, I`ll read it in school or during library. People bug me so much, and start reading from the middle of say Naruto #5 and they wonder why they don`t understand it...and not only do they read from the middle of the book...they read it really slow and outloud...and sometimes backwards (or should i say forwards?).

I`m glad about next year though, I`ll be in 9th grade. I`ll be going to this huge high school with lotsa people, and I`ve already seen 2 people there with anime things on (one girl has an Inu Yasha hoodie, the other a hat of Kyo in his cat form).

Hi everyone! Great to see some of you pioneering anime/manga at your schools. And now for the newest sightings at Tennessee High:
I've already said anime/manga is fairly popular at my school. Basically, there are those who like it, and those who think it's those"stupid Japanese cartoons" but don't know anything about it. I've never actually met anyone who said it's a sin or satanic or anything.
Anyway. A couple months ago I saw a girl with an anime shirt. I've seen kids reading manga at school before but not recently. There's a group of girls who read manga in the hallway sometimes. In my art class, they have a thing called "senior legacies" where the best Art 4 seniors get to paint a ceiling tile for the classroom. There are a couple in anime-style, and one of them is of the anime Akira. My art teacher talks a lot about anime and manga (though he doesn't know much about it... he's not like some art teachers who hate it; he doesn't care if we draw anime-style) There's also a girl in my art class who brings How To Draw Manga books a lot.
Unfortunately there are some bad manga choices at my school too. Personally I don't bring manga to school because it just brings up akward conversation. I enjoy it at home but at school I just talk with friends and focus on... school... I have gotten some of my friends to like the Azumanga Daioh anime though.

Me and my friends kinda of started the whole manga thing at our school...we have even infiltrated the library-media class and now have manga in our school library!

We have a nice little circle of people, and most of us are into art too. Sadly, one of us is leaving next year T^T
Anyway, we have this little system where we pass manga throughout us. Like, whenever I get a new furuba, I read it the night I get it, then it starts getting circulated around. Same with my Hellsing and all the other books I get XD I read most of Akira like this (my friend's dad had collected the old comic books up until like volume 10 or something and I haven't read past there..) I also read Dragon Knights this way and saw the first three dvds of Angelic layer. People know kinda what manga and anime is, and to the best of my knowledge no one really makes fun of it... then again, I can be kinda dense. I don't really care what people say outside my little friends groups.
I'm very blessed with an art teacher who doesn't discourage our anime/manga liking either. She encourages it, even if she teaches realistic art. So we don't draw anime in her class, but she does recognize it as an art form, and thats very nice. I'm lucky to have upperclassmen that introduced her to it before before me XD

Exactly. My teacher doesn't care what we do or even if we follow the assignments... as long as he has something to grade when it's all said and done.
I hope my art 2 teacher gives us as much freedom...-

I'd actually rather have less freedom in class - meaning that she is teaching us the drawing techniques we need - but still have an art teacher who is open-minded to other art forms like manga. Luckily, thats what I have ^^

We have an anime club (i couldnt get in because i couldnt get a ride to the meetings!!! ack) at my school with a pretty fair amount of people in it too. I know the people in the club. They're nice and they bring tons of manga for the rest of the group to borrow but I find that a lot of it is...questionable so that pretty much put me off borrowing much from them. Maybe the tone of it will change next year. People know what you're talking about if you bring up anime but heaven forbid you bring manga around some of them. They'll declare it's all porn and sick and wrong. *sigh* most won't though. It's known well enough.

At my school. It's basically me, and my friend Yeito who are hard-core otaku o_o [ When I say that I mean, read and watch Naruto and buy anime all the time and stuff. ]We have converted a couple of people, but one of them reads manga only whenever she feels like it and the other is a newbie XD! There were two others but they just moved away o_o; Mostly the people at our school ignore us XD!

Also, since the point Osaka made the original post, we have had a fifty percent increase in the number of manga buffs at our school. 100 percent of the student body now purchase and read manga. That's right. All four of us.
