Female avatar for boys

Postby Steve Racer » Wed Feb 02, 2005 5:58 pm

So, why so many boys use girl anime characters for avatars here? Me confused.

(note: Speed Racer is a boy. :P )

Uh...I dunno.

Because I want to?

Please note, that wasn't supposed to be a demeaning tone. I really don't have any particular reason for it.

I'm guessing that they just want to put up the character they like best. That's the case for me, at least; I'm a girl, but I love Asakura Hao, so he ended up as my avatar. ^__^

Rei's been there for a long time, and she shall stay for a while yet.

That and I'd rather stare at her than some guy.

Because girls are cool.

. . . No, actually, like everybody said, you pretty much choose your favorite character to use as your avatar. Often that character may not be of the same sex as you (and perhaps the reason you like them has something to do with that, actually ;) ). I had Takuto in my avatar for a while. Mitsuki was there too, but so was Takuto.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Peronaly It buggs me a little, because I will liook at the avatar and say "oh look, its some girl." and then i realize that the person is a guy and I say "wha!?" I just like things to look like they are. Of course, I can't speak because I have an avatar of an old relativly ugly guy, and I am quite young and (I hope) not too ugly.

To be honest I never really understood this phenomena until now. I guess it makes sense...but honestly, I guess I usually like to keep my female persona. I don't mind RP'ing as guys (cause that's fun too) but I'm a girl...so I usually pick female avs. At least no one's ever confused me for a boy.

As for staring at my favorite bishies, that's what my sig is for!

I use to use female avatars but for some reason....I have problems uploading avys even smaller than 90x90 or 14kb. Besides, we all know girls are cooler and no, I am not trying earn brownie points. In anime, they generally are, except Kenshin.

I personaly prefer when guys use guy avatars simply because somtimes I assume. I recently found out a member here was a girl..after about 2 months thinking they were a dude. *embarrassed* As far as mine goes...its Vincent...and Vincent kicks butt. He has long hair, is moody, and can turn into a horrifying beast when he gets mad...in other words, its me. ;)

I find it a little confusing myself but I've also experienced kind of a reverse effect. Like assuming Sam*ron's avatar is a girl becuse she's a girl. Some anime guys are kind of easy to confuse.

Anyway, I have to admit, if I didn't have an RPG alter-ego that I spent a couple of decades developing, I'd probably have choosen a female anime character for my avatar as well. At least until I saw how confusing it was.

Wasn't there a Megatokyo strip about this? Largo was pestering Piro as to why he used a girl in Endgames and Piro basically told him that Largo was the weird one because he obsessed over his bulked out manly man rather than a cute girl. I'll go see if I can find the strip somewhere.

Personally, I don't care either way. I tend to use females as my avatars ... well, right now I'm using the 1up Mushroom on AIM and I'm pretty sure that mushrooms don't have genders.

*EDIT* I can't seem to find it. I'm pretty sure it was a Nazi Nagi strip. (You know, the ones inspired from Ruri and Akito's lectures from Nadesico.)

When people see an avatar, they expect it to represent its owner. However, representation can take many forms, many of them having little to do with the physical appearance of the user. In general, an avatar says more about what a person likes, wants to be seen as, or wants to become, which can be very different from their actual current state.

Lol, i like using both, i just usually usa an avatar of one of my favourite chars, (sometimes from the most recent anime i'm watching, but not always), sometines a char is so cool i HAVE to put em in my avatar, and as mentioned by lotsa people, i like staring at anime girls alot more than anime guys

i usually look for the gender symbols beside peoples names anyway, so i don't mistake people, prob because i'm used to gettind mistaken for a girl ocassionaly by people... (its my long hair...)

I agree with that, I know when I've been online for hours at a time rather it be playing games or going on messageboards...I tend to start thinking the members of a messageboard look like their avatars, especially when you've been on for hours posting and lose sense of reality.....now that's scary! :eh:
