Well, since we will very most likely be moving to Albany, NY, what do you not do? I think they're called Faux Pas. I heard that you don't look people in the face, for instance. I especially would appericiate any advice about New York City. You may not now, but I would hate to look like a clueless tourist.

-don't walk through the city looking up at the buildings... that's a dead give-away that you're unfamiliar with the city. (^^ plus it makes you look like a hungry baby bird, lol) and don't carry around city maps/info books/brochures. lol - and any other typical anti-tourist stuff.
other than that, i haven't ever been there, so don't have any specific advice other than don't keep your wallet in a highly visible/obvious place.

Stay on your toes, be very alert and aware, but not go paranoid. You need to keep your wits about you. I've never been to New York City, but I've been in Chicago for a spell once, and it helped to be aware. Also if you meet any beggars, don't look at them in the eye, or they'll follow you until you give money to them (keep in mind that they may not be beggars after all!)

Albany's not that big of a city ~100,000 people if I remember correctly, and it's a fair distance from New York City itself. I'd be surprised if the city was at all as crabby as the Big Apple is reputed to be. Much of the state is actually pretty friendly- my parents regulary vacation in the Alleghanys (usually hanging around Ellicotville or in the state park).

Don't take sweets from strangers and try to not to be naive. The moment they realize that you are new they will try to fool you with some made up stories etc..
Also, don't put your finger into a power socket!

Alright, let's see. Don't walk around alone in NYC near alleys. If you're afraid of rats, stay away from alleys even when with friends. (I like rats but know some who don't.) Don't look up at buildings not just because of pigeon candy (they've good aim, you know) and that you'll look silly, but you might get dizzy.
Not much else. I've been to parts of it and it's pretty nice.
