Japanese restaurants

I finally get to go to a Japanese resturuant!!

My dad and I looked at some and they looked...ok. But I found one online that got some great reviews! Plus I heard from some people in the Japanese Club at school that this resturant (Yoko's Japananese Restuarant) is to die for.

The only thing is that it's a bit pricy (depending what yo get) and my mother and sister doesn't what to.

My mom just doesn't want to. No reason there, she doesn't want to try it. My sister loves hamburgers and if it doesn't sell hamburgers, she hates it.

there's a Japanese restaurant here that's pretty awesome. it is kinda pricey, but it's SO GOOD. and you get a lot of food. yay hibachi chicken. sometime I'll get the guts to try sushi/sashimi (no pun intended).

I like the ones in the States where they have the big hibachi and cook stuff on it right in front of you. The chef tells funny jokes and is really talented at spinning knives and stuff. It's really worth the price because you get a great show/time with a super meal which you usually can't finish.

yep ^_^ it's a good time. something you need to bear in mind though, if there's a grill table with only a couple of people sitting at it, and you come in, they'll seat you with the other people, not at your own table. ^_^; that sort of unnerved me at first but now I think it's kinda neat.

I'm always akward in those kind of restaurants because it makes me feel like I'm being lazy and I should cook the food myself, but then I remind myself that the cook is being paid and probably doesn't care if we're too lazy to cook for ourselves, so I kinda get over it...

Past couple of times I have gone to Animazement in Durham, N.C., members of my anime club(Before it fell apart) have gone to a Japanese restaurant in Raleigh, N.C. ( Can't remember the name of the place) on Thursday night after we ride down from Wash. D.C. area. First time I have used chop sticks to eat with and also Japanese styled food. Very enjoyable place and food.

Places like Benihama are Japanese in origin but make just about any food you ask for ( Cheeseburgers , RiceBowls, AND KOREAN BBQ)

Never eaten Japanese food...I went to a sushi place once, but I didn't have the guts to try anything. However, [name deleted] insists that she will take me to a sushi place in the near future.

I do, however, enjoy Mongolian BBQ a LOT. Too bad there aren't any good places for it here...there was an AWESOME one in SC and another awesome one in Norfolk...

I find that a lot of Japanese places are a tad on the expensive side. Luckily, I've found a place that's pretty cheap. Someday, I plan to do the teppanyaki thing. But yeah, Korean BBQ is awesome and so is Pho. Tasty meat.

Anyone have hot pot before? Also tasty.

We have a Smokey Bones, but I think it's considered to be more of a steakhouse than a burger place. But you suffered a sever let down, so I will not nitpick. Poor Hitokiri. Let me know how it is when you do go, and I might work up the courage to try out my local Japanese place. I'll have to try it alone, because no one from work dares to venture beyond Wendys.

Japanese food is pretty good, and definately not limited to sushi. If you're nervous about the fish, I'd recommend either the faux sushi (not raw fish) or another Japanese dish like yakisoba, teriyaki or tempura. There's really a fair bit of variety for the faint-hearted.

Most of the Japanese restaurants around here are actually Korean-owned (who make some pretty good food too) rather than Japanese. If you go to Vancouver or Whistler though you'll really find the genuine article. Vancouver's Japanese population (tourist and resident) is such that most of the signage downtown is bilingual. Of course, when I went I was on a per diem and wasn't paying for most of my meals (yay conferences!).

PS. don't waste money on sake, it's pretty awful stuff.

Japanese food is great! I love tempura, okanomiyaki is great, miso soup is too salty and sushi is alright. The Japanese restraunt we went to with our Japanese exchange teacher required us to cook the food at our own table (still expensive) but there was definetly a lot of food and it takes more courses to get full than Western food does.
And Mongolian BBQ is delicious!

One word, buffet.
Although buffet places lack quality-- cheap. But hey, gotta love those fried bananas. Actually, if you see me in a buffet place it's mostly for the fried bananas...

sushi is alirght too... Not the greatest, but sometimes it's a nice change.

We have several tempenyaki style restaurants in my area. I love to eat there, although it's not much different from western cuisine. There are certainly "more Japanese" ways to eat.

We have no Japanese restaurants of any kind anywhere around where I am! Then again, I live in kind of an outpost type place, so I really shouldn't expect any.

All we have is Chinese takeout. i've only had Chinese food twice in my life. I found out I like egg rolls.

Bay Area Japanese food is good. The ones out here in the great IE aren't so stellar, although Joe's Sushi (yes, that's really what it's called) in Riverside isn't bad. There's another one which is "eh, okay" by my apartment.

Thing is, Japanese food does not mean strictly sushi/sashimi. Sushi was most likely invented by someone extremely wealthy who was depressed by the fact that even though he had all the money in the world, he could still only eat so much. So he devised a dish which would give you the least amount of filling food for the most amount of money, and thus sushi was born. That guy probably invented the concept of the deadly French tiny food+huge plate+tiny table combo as well.

Hmm...we have quite a number of Japanese restaurants in my area (Midori, Sansu, Murasaki, Omi, Sushi-Ya). I'm not particularly too picky about the food quality between these restaurants because honestly, I can't really tell the difference. But some places have the Japanese room setting...you know, where everyone sits on the floor. That's cool.

Some people have the perception that eating Japanese food always mean eating raw fish. If I look at the menu at the restaurants I've been to, I would say maybe only 10% of the choices involve raw stuff and I rarely eat anything raw (for food safety reasons hehe). My fav. picks are shrimp tempura, unagi/eel (cooked of course ) and spider roll.

My fav. restaurant is Ichi-ban, somewhere in Las Vegas. The spider roll was really good and that was one of most memorable experiences in LV hehe

I've also been to Todai somewhere North Chicago (a sushi buffet) and didn't like it at all since ppl were very wasteful with the food and in general, when you mass-produce something, the quality deteriorates significantly.
