Who is your LEAST favorite, and Favorite Anime company?

Postby The Doctor » Wed Jan 26, 2005 1:08 pm

This can include the original production companies in Japan and the dubbers we have here in the U.S.

Personally, right now my LEAST favorite anime company is A.D.V. Films, because I don't think they do a good job in casting voice actors (now mind you, this is based on ONE anime other than Robotech that I've seen from them, and in this anime the voice acting was VERY VERY poor.)

My favorites, I have two, would have to be Anime Works and Bandai. I used to think of Bandai as just a cheap toymaker, but in retrospect of their other works, Bandai actually makes some pretty nice quality work, in terms of animation and story telling.

I, at one point, had respect for ADV. --; I kinda lost it when I saw the treatment they gave the Tactics manga...ah well, ignorance is bliss I suppose. I like Geneon as a company on this side of the Pacific, and Bandai is okay, though I think the number of crappy series Bandai licenses far outnumbers the good series they license. Just my two cents, though.

Gee, I really don't just as long as I enjoy the anime. I have stuff from Pioneer, Bandai, A.D.V, and even the less known ones such as Viz and Manga.

I seem to have more Pioneer (geneon) and Bandai is good too.... I don't really look at the company unless it is a title I want....

Well, let's see:
AnimEigo: "We don't need no stinking product."
ADV: If you're a sub fan, they're not bad. Manga translations are bad.
CPM: Balky DVDs
Geneon: Still haven't forgiven them from when they were Pioneer
Bandai: Bowdlerized subs
AnimeWorks: Mediocre-- which is good in this business.
VIZ: Ripoff central. Have to start putting more than 3eps per disc

Hmm, probably I have the fewest issues with ADV.

LOL. Actually AnimeHeretic, you should be thankful because Viz is giving you a taste of life in Japan.

In Japan, they only put 3 anime eps. per disc. You can imagine how much money folks lose buying anime.

in Japan the X TV DVDs had two episodes per disc, and episode 0 was on a DVD all by itself. We have it good.

Most are two/disc-- and can run $40 to 50 per disc. Older series can get you more for less though.

(Found out about it when looking into buying Kanon, which took 7 discs for 13 episodes (ep 1 on first disc and 2ep/disc for the rest) at $50/disc.)

the only two releases I like from ADV would be Noir and the Robotech:Remastered sets, other than that I absolutely despise them. I really cant say for sure why, but it's probably the actors they have; namely Tiffany Grant, who conveniently married the co-founder and now she can be in anything she wants.
If I hadnt already declared Richard Cox as my nemesis, she would be it.

Nani Sore? Please elaborate? I worked in an animation studio before and I can't understand your question. Is it the studio the produces the animation, the distributor, the sponsor for as I read the thread there is a mish mash of companies from different spectrums of the industry. EX: ADV is not an animation company that produces, but is just an international distributor while Toei, Ghibli, Tatsunuko, AKOM, are animation studios, Bandai, Tomy Corp. and King Records are sponsors who put up the money for the animation project to be realized in return that they would use the characters for their maketing purposes like those toys all of you fanboys and fangirls are buying (what am I saying! I'm one of them!!!!!)

Okay. I really don't care about stateside distribution (although when it comes to manga, I like Tokyopop and Dark Horse). But I like Sunrise Studios best.

Well, if that's the case. I'd say all and none. Reason for saying that is a lot of the anime studio brought out great titles since WWII, but at the same time they also brought out bombs as well. I have Tatsunuko's production files and there we're some titles that are just hillariously silly. However they brought out animation milestones such as Gatchaman (G-Force), Macross and Evangelion. I worked for Nelvana Studio, the guys who distributed Card Captor Sukura in N. America. All I could say that I was appalled on how they treated the series when they got their hands on it. But at the very least they managed to release an "uncut" edition, after a flood of hatemail came to them from fans of the show. Nelvana also owns the distributing rights to Baylade (Bayblade) and Medabots (Metabots).

That said, Geneon/Pioneer is my fav Company for dub. ADV, Media Works, and uh... Dub wise? I don't know...

Hate : Viz

I hate Viz with an unholy passion. They rip you off badly and their dvd's are pathetic. Inu Yasha, which im not a fan of but it makes a good example, has only THREE EPISODES PER DISC. They are up to like 33 dvd's. By the time they are done, there will probably be like 45 dvd's (or somewhere around there). That is sad. They should have released it 5 eps per dvd. Personally, I'm afraid this is what will happen to Naruto when it's released in the states.

Love:

I like TokyoPop for pretty good translations, nice box art, nice prices, good deals. I also like Pioneer somewhat too.

Least favorite, 4kids and their incessant dubbing/editing.. One Piece for example.. Badly dubbed it, changed names, and removed all signs of guns from the entire show.

Favorite, Pioneer/Geneon (same company now) Their DVDs have a good amount of extra content, plus their boxsets usually have some goodies. They do a good job with their subs, and seem to actually care about who they cast as a voice actor.

I believe 4Kids also edited Sanji's cigarette from One Piece into a lollypop (quite lame in my humble opnion).

I'm not a big thing when it comes to companies, but I'm probably anti-4Kids, and support Pioneer and Bandai....as for Japanese companies, I definitely like Gainax.
