I looked in the newspaper that some mother that was a Chirstian was saying that spongebob was tolerant with homosexuality...I was like "Oh please!" Sponge bob is so cool. Thats so dumb because it gives Christains a bad name when sterotypical ones say stuff like that! :shady:

SNL's Weekend report poked fun at this one... I should e-mail my one friend, he's a big Spongebob fan.

Did the article (or specifically the person) specify why they believe such a thing?

From what episode(s) did this group draw that conclusion?
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

EDIT: Read Techno's post 'cuz Crack didn't get his facts straight. Also, see this article for details.

Incidentally, it was revealed in 2002 that Spongebob was popular with the gay community, but the creator insists that his characters are for the most part asexual. He is a sponge, after all.

Sponge Bob is just a kid like cartoon character. If he is guy then we can assume that Burt and Ernie are guy because they live together. NOT!
I think the guy that says that has a sick mind.

The objections seem to have been based on FoF's not doing their homework. The Spongebob video 'We Are Family' has nothing to do with homosexuality, nor does it depict in any way. Dobson's group seems to have confused the project with another, pro-gay organization also called 'We Are Family'.

Sheesh, what's next Teletubbies? ;)
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

Out of curiousity, is this the first time this has been brought up? I mean, this cartoon has been out since '99 and they're just now bringing this up? I find that weird.

EDIT:Just thought of something else. Would there be this much attention if the characters were thought to be female? Especially in ILoveArt's case about Bert and Ernie.

Number one...he's a freakin' CARTOON.

Number two...sponges do not have genders anyway, therefore, it would be kind of impossible for him to be gay.

Agreed, some people just have WAY too much time on their hands. :shady:

If you have lisp, walk funny, are different, aren't a pervert for women or if you're just a non-sexual person, freindly and happy. People label you "Gay"

I never had a lisp or any of those and I use to be gay.

Society is so rude, always labeling, If you look-good, dress-good, smell-good they call you a "MetroSexual". since when did hygeine have anything to do with sexuality.

The only way one can be considered "straight" now-a-days is if one is a slob who loves cars and sleeps with a random woman every night.

I say all these Judgers and Labelers can shove a pine cone up theirs.... Pathetic Mortals.

This is the type of thing that I see it and don't pay any attention to it. I do not find Spongebob or any of the Bikini Bottom (hint hint) citizens gay.

I'm kinda surprised FoF doesn't praise it for actually not being perverted or having audlt humor and the such.

*shakes head* =/ I read this. Some people just have WAY too much time on their hands. This is somewhat reminiscent of the "Pokemon are demons" days. And personally, that thing on it 'being morally wrong to respect people's sexual orientation'. It isn't wrong. It's wrong to say the Bible doesn't condemn homosexuality, however without respect we'd miss the opportunity to witness to people who do have problems with being homosexual.

All I can say is: GET A LIFE!!!!!! What's the point in chewing out something perfectly harmless? People just like to stir up trouble and doubts. How can you pick on a show that kids of all ages are watching when there are some movies out there that clearly promote homosexuality, and WORSE!!! Ahh -_- when will they learn?

The video which caused this whole fiasco was encouraging tolerance and diversity. "Different" families were among the topics covered, from what the news articles said. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but it is possible to both tolarate and morally disagree with homosexuality, making those news articles completely ridiculous.)

...Oh, man. I know I'm going to be chased by all of you with many pointy and unpleasant objects, and I'll probably lose a lot of respect from you...but I must get this out. A few episodes from Spongebob Squarepants make me uneasy. It's not the lisp or the wacky way he behaves that makes me think this. That would be ridiculous. It's the times where Spongebob and Patrick act as almost more than friends.

As an example, do you know the episode where Patrick and Spongebob are blowing bubble notes to each other and the messages get mixed up and they get offended and become enemies? That episode only made me very slightly uneasy, becauseat the end, they made it seem that they were making up...like they were a couple. Patrick says, "Spongebob and I are friends again!" they give each other that side hug thing. I just couldn't get a disgusted feeling out of my stomach.

I know that was a really weak one, but it's not the one that really bothers me. The one that I really felt uncomfortable with was the one where SB and Patrick become the parents of a baby clam. Spongebob plays the role of the mommy, and Patrick is the dad. It was full of all kinds of slightly suggestively gay things. No, they didn't just take care of the baby, Spongeob actually acted like a woman, and Patrick acted like his husband. One of the most disturbing things was when, at the end, Patrick turned to SB and said, "Let's have another." Yes, I know, gay couples can't have babies, but I don't like seeing them turn males into crossdressing mothers.

Does this mean that I think Spongebob and Patrick are gay? No. But I do think the writers of the show are trying to satisfy the gay crowd by putting in suggestively gay moments. Just enough so that the majority of the population isn't offended.

Please don't kill me. Believe me, I'm not trying to look for nitpicky things. I like watching Spongebob Squarepants occasionally. I just can't help but think of what things sound like to me when I watch these scenes. :lickbash: :bootout: ...Ow. :sniffle:

I don't know if I'd say all of that, Lunis. I don't think they're trying to please a gay crowd, I think it's more for comedy relief. I mean, Bugs Bunny was crossdressing and kissing men back in the '50s.

As for this thing about Dobson, Dobson said no such thing about Spongebob being gay. Spongebob, Barney, and several other characters were going to be used in a school textbook about tolerance, and one of the topics in the book is the tolerance of one's sexual preference. Dobson never said that Spongebob was gay, or that the show supported homosexuality and slamming the guy unjustly before knowing the facts is fruitless.

Here's an article about it, and as for Technomancer's comment about tellitubbies... well, just look at the bottom of the article!

I for one am with Lunis all the way. As I was reading through these posts, I was planning on posting someting about the "Baby Clam" episode and another episode in which spongebob dresses up like a woman. I am not sure wheather Spongebob's creaters intended him to seem gay but I can see how he could be interpedid as being that way.

I know I am in the minority here, but there is something fishy about that Sponge.

I hug alot of my guy friends just cause they're my good friends (that and we're Christians) but I se enothing wrong with a guy hugging another guy whom is friends with. Heck, some of the non-christian guy friends I have...if I havn't seen for a while, we hug. Actually, a couple of my friends leaps into my arms.... :eh:

But I did wonder about that Baby Claim episode however I found it rather funny. I didn't take it to personal.

Though one episode in particular was when Patrick and Spongebod were in a "Fry Cook-Off" I believe and they were wrestling and they both ripped their pants.

Patrick was wearing yellow whitey-tighties while spongebob wore....pink...then they went off arm in arm (or hand in hand). That kinda made me wonder. However, I don't think it's something to be up in arms about unless Spongebob starts sporting a rainbow t-shirt with a upside down purple triangle and Patrick ends up rooming with Spongebob. For th etime being, I find it a rather innocent show.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if Nickelodeon pulled an under-handed trick like making one of their most beloved characters gay, that doesn't seem to be the case. And even if whoever wrote that article is in error or blew the whole thing out of proportion, they are just trying to alert other Christians of ungodly things being placed in front of innocent children.

Actually, I remember reading an excerpt from the Wall Street Journal a few years ago in my journalism class suggesting the same thing--that the show insinuated Patrick and Spongebob were lovers. So this is not a new theory at all.

Whether it's true or not I can't really say--my siblings are a little old for spongebob now and even if I had the time to watch TV, I certainly wouldn't watch an annoying sponge. (just my feelings on the show, btw, no offense meant to anyone).
