What do you guys prefer? Shoujo or shounen anime?

Postby Kura Ookami » Wed Jan 19, 2005 2:44 am

Shoujo anime is aimed at girls and includes such titles as sailor moon, Pretear and Fruits Basket. Shounen anime is aimed at boys and includes such titles as Dragonball Z, Cowboy Bebop and Rurouni Kenshin. So which general genre do you guys prefer? Shoujo or shounen?

Well...the experts classify Matantei Loki Ragnarok and Tactics as shounen so...x3; I'd have to say I'm more of a shounen girl (oh yes, lovely oxymoron), but I do have a liking for a good number of shoujo titles, too.

Shoujo for sure, although I have several shounen favorites, like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Gundam Wing (which, admittedly, is a little debatable). I won't write off a title simply because it's shounen, but shoujo is by far preferred.

I'm definitely a shonen person. Shoujo just doesn't appeal to me as much for some reason. I also prefer the bishies in shonen more than the ones in shoujo. Maybe it's because they do more then just flaunt their bishiness. *is beginning to sense angry vibes from female shoujo fans* *laughs nervously* Well, you know what I mean! Like the ones in shonen anime aren't looking for girls, and maybe that appeals to me. I dunno! XD

I tend to be shoojo myself.

I have somewhat of a mixture but my tastes lean more towards the romantic comedies. The titles at the top of my favorites list tend to be shoujo so I'll go with that.

It depends. Giant Robo isn't either... It's not robot action, and it's not a love story...

I never really thought of Bebop as shounen, to me it has always been a "genre within itself."

It just depends on the series. I liked Sailor Moon, I liked Dragonball... whatever, really, as long as it's good. ^_^

Hmm...let's see, what are some of my favorite series...

Ai Yori Aoshi...shoujo.
Fushigi Yugi...shoujo.
Full Moon wo Sagashite...shoujo.
Sailor Moon...shoujo.
Cardcaptor Sakura...shoujo.
Magic Knight Rayearth...shoujo.

Yeah, I'd have to say I'm a shoujo fan, personally. Though I do like shounen titles (Those Who Hunt Elves, Trigun, Ranma, and Mahoromatic come to mind), I like shoujo better by far.

I tend to like what I like. I am not afraid to watch a Shoujo title. In fact I do like those because they have good art and...pretty girls  I am also a sucker for the romantic comedies. I loved Fruits Basket. Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi was really good to, I watched Pretear and thought it was a fun little romp.

I absolutly love giant robots. Gundam, Full Metal Panic, Gasaraki, Nadesico. Rouruni Kenshin is probobly my fav right now, and I am finding I tend to like samurai animes. I like the cool stories and action of Shounon and the rockin good guys. Vash, Wolfwood etc.

So I can safly say I like ether one. As long as the stories good, the art is good, and Fanservice etc is not to abundant I can enjoy any series.

This shoujo/shonen thing is kind of weird now that so much anime aimed at guys is cute and fluffy and lots of action shows have some pretty boy with hordes of fangirls. I suppose this isn't particularly new but I would venture that the classification isn't nearly as rigid or useful as it might have been in the past.

Well, my favorate anime is Escaflowne at the moment I'd say. What broad genre would that be placed in? It has plenty of action, but also plenty of romance as well and pretty much no comedy. It therefore has elements of both Shoujo and Shounen animes.

Generally speaking though i prefer shounen anime to answer my own question. Lol!

I keep my preferences to myself. You guess will just never know.

Yeah-- everybody already knows I'm a complete shoujo freak. I love it. I rarely EVERY watch/read any shonen. Too much hitting and stuff.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

A good acid test for shoujo/shounen is to look at the target audience of the anthology in which the manga was originally published. Escaflowne is interesting in this case because it was originally published in Shounen Ace, but was reincarnated later as a shoujo series. However, the TV series more closely resembles the shoujo version, so as a matter of classification I think it can be put safely in the shoujo camp.

I tend to lean towards shonen. Most shojos are icky romantic animes. Sure, some shonen have romance, but shonen romance isn't as, well, icky. :P And I like shonen plots better.

Shounen all the way, baby!!!!!(particularly mecha) I am kinda' narrow-minded when it comes to anime, but still. I just love watching the Zentreadi lay waste to Macross City or Wing Zero blow away entire armies with it's insanely powerful beam cannon! Yeah! Now this is what anime is about  !!! Giant Robots   !!!!!!! I also enjoy action/adventure anime. Final Fantasy Unlimited is the best :thumb: !
Okay despite all this, I have ONE exception. Sailor Moon, I dunno why, it just appeals to me for some odd reason :eh: . But anyway 'nuf said.

My two favorite things about anime:
Giant robots and bishoujo    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have to say i like both so do most people i know but then agian both can be good and both can be really bad so anime should not be classified that way in my eyes

A little of both, but I probably like more shounen.

If Astro Boy, Last Exile, Gun Smith Cats and Noir are Shounen, then that's it for me. But I enjoy Spirited Away, Sailor Moon was alright (probably the first anime I ever saw), Bubblegum Crisis 2040 was pretty good too.
