English the worst subject to man. It is a hard course for me. that is why I said "English the worst subject to man". How many on this site hate English I know I do. I try to do my best in it but alwes seem to get a C- in the course. I don't like the course because there is no fun in it or hands on projects. It alwes has to be wrighting and reading which I am not good at. so lets here your story on the subject of English. I be glad that I not the ownly on who struggles in English. well talk to you soon. Math is precise...solid. It doesn't waver or change, it is forever the same.

Numbers are definite. 2 is 2, no matter what. But "row" can mean multiple things depending on context. English is stupid.

As an engineer, I fail to see the need to take English. I grew up speaking the language, I use very little slang, and I can write meaningful sentences. I cannot fathom how I will EVER need the ability to write an exhaustive research paper on the works of Henry David Thoreau in order to run a nuclear reactor. I can see how I would need how to use math, though.

The difference between math and English is, English states, "What do you think?" and there could be fifty different answers, all correct. Math states, "What is the correct answer?" and there is only ONE answer, everything else is wrong.

Speaking of which, if the question states, "What do you think..." then how can there be an incorrect answer? If I put down what I think, even if the teacher does not agree with it, isn't it by definition correct since it is what I think? That is PRECISELY why I hate English. It's too abstract.

Ya math is one of my faverit subjects same with chemistry. woodwork is another I like it is like I am in my own world when I am doing math, chemistry, or woodwork. I can see why I need English for chemistry and woodwork. but I don't know why we all have to study a dead guy named Shakespeare. LOL, true enough. What we speak is a highly Americanized version of the original language. Anyway, I love English and hate Math. Don't feel bad about not doing well in English, but don't hate it either. God gave differant people differant ablities so we all wouldn't be exactly the same. ^^

I hate math. my brain just doesn't do math. I do writing and other Englishy things well. err...when I felt like doing the work, that is. writing is something that's hard for me to force. like, I failed English III the first time because I didn't write a sonnet that was worth a huge chunk of the grade. -___-;

I will side with the pro english people, since I haven't managed a grade above a C in math in years, reguardless of tutoring or studying, while I have made all Bs and As in English for all time.

well I see that we all have a problem in a subject. for instance I love math and hands on work but hate English. and there are pepole who hate math. very interesting. well I see that God gave all of us a uneek skill in some form or another. For me it is math for another person it could be English. Well I am happy for the skill that God gave me. It is like my skill can be used to help other people, and thir skills to help me or some one easl. It is like we are all here to help some one.

This may come as a shock to those that know my major, but I'm not good at math. I'm not bad, but there is definite room for improvement. I just like it.

I also like English, for the very reason that Kae dislikes it. The ways that words can be twisted and played with is a thing of beauty. I sometimes feel like screaming at the atrocities done it in the name of quickness and ease. There are sometimes when phonetics are a disservice, and other words are spelled counter-intuitively, but language is lovely. I was in high-school before the possiblity of someone not wanting to read occured to me, and then only because I was confronted with the reality.

To sum, infinite series rock, and bomb the ghetto.

I didn't say that 2+2 was always four. I said that the quantity two was always two, regardless of anything. 2 is always 2, unless you're talking about computer code in which it doesn't exist. However, letters can be multiple things. There are long and short vowels, and "y" has its own rules too. Not so with numbers.

Yes, there is. It's called breaking the rules of mathematics. See? You can only do strange things with math if you break the rules. I've seen that problem, and the trick to make 2=1 is to divide by zero, which you cannot do since dividing by zero is undefined. Well, technically, dividing by zero is infinity, since zero goes into anything an infinite number of times.

Sorry, I have a logical brain, and English does not work well with the logical mind, not to mention that it has ZERO application in the engineering field, which is why engineers should not be required to take it. I wish I knew who came up with the model for higher education in America, because they should be beaten to a pulp.

This is true. I've never seen an engineer able to, or bother to, communicate with someone outside of the engineering field, ever.

You know, I've never had a problem with either subject really. Obviously I'm comfortable with advanced mathematics, but am also widely read. I enjoy Shakespeare as well as more contemporary literature and have never had a problem with it. And I have never had any use for the idea that the maintaining of 'Two Cultures' as C.P. Snow put it is a good
thing.

For obvious reasons good English is essential to any professional, engineers included. If you can't effectively communicate with your colleagues, your ideas will never be heard. Likewise, you will be interacting with people from other backgrounds (some may be your boss!) and you will have to ensure that your ideas can be understood by the non-specialist. This means being good at both oral and written communications. I don't know if an English literature course is the best vehicle for developing such skills, but it serves its own purposes too. The fact is, the best way of learning how to write is to read and read widely.

As far as applications go, who cares. Life is not all about numbers and figures; we need to inject some humanity into it too. I'm going to stop now before I start singing "Closer to the Heart" or something. However, you might want to consider reading Samuel Floorman' books "The Existential Pleasures of Engineering" and "The Civilized Engineer".

I'm an aspiring writer, so English is a fun class to me. I can see where your frustration stems from though, as a lot of the literature covered in a standard English class is analyzed to death and English's grammar rules are, as a FACT, the most irregular in the world. =O

Hmm... All these debates on which subject is best make me think. (*danger:Chase-thinking ahead) To tell you the truth, it's hard for me to choose a favorite and harder to say which one's more important.

I'm a bio-chemistry Major, so I have to know a load of science and a bunch of math. Math and Chemistry are appealing to me because of their concreteness and diversity of application; AND (believe it or not) I can actually find them fun sometimes-- kind of like solving puzzles. Math and Science are undoubtedly applicable and absolutely important to how we live! The more we know of how things work and why, the more we can help out humanity with medicines and better ways of making life easier. Math and Science are chief in knowledge and they will never fail to aid us in our ENDLESS PERSUIT FOR TRUTH!! :: thunder and lightning!::

But English is great, too! It's creative, subjective, and you can make it your own! Grammar’s isn't so fun sometimes, but it's a lot like math, if you think about it. Most of all, I love English because it's a great mode of expression and hand-in-hand with art. I love art (check under the avatar)! Great literature is just as colorful and provocative as any Da Vinchi or Monet! It's our chief mode of recording history and stories, so it's invaluable to our ENDLESS PERSUTE FOR TRUTH!!

Really, that's just a fancy way of saying I'm indecisive. But I do love them all for their own reasons. Sometimes I wish I would have majored in English or art or something (I wish art a lot), but the grass is always greener. Life is too short to know it all, eh? Certainly too short to love it all.
