eBay Fraud WARNING

Postby Bobtheduck » Sat Jan 15, 2005 2:46 am

There are a series of emails that all have similar ideas... Your Ebay account has been cancelled or will be cancelled if you don't go to a link on the site and update your info...

DO NOT FOLLOW THAT LINK!

Dear eBay customer ,

During our regular update and verification of the accounts, we couldn't verify your current information. Either your information has changed or it is incomplete. If the account information is not updated to current information within 3 days then, your access to bid or buy on eBay will be restricted .

Note : Ignoring this message will cause the Suspension of your account . To reactivate it you will have to pay a fee of 350 $ .

Please update and verify your information by signing in your account using the link below :
http://signin.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?userupdate&Secure;ssPageName=h:h:sin:US

eBay will NOT request personal data (password; credit card/bank numbers, and so on) in email. Do NOT give your information to anyone via email .To protect you against cybercriminals eBay now has encrypted 128 - bit ssl connection.
As outlined in our User Agreement , eBay will periodically send you information about site changes and enhancements

Since I just copied the text, this leftout the actual link... The words that show as "Signin.ebay.com..." actually lead to http://mail.sehwa.biz/safeharbor.verify ... index.html

EDIT: Do not follow that link, by the way... Besides being a spoof site to gather info, it may have something less dangerous but still worth avoiding, such as a virus... Sorry for not clarifying that...

These sorts of sites are VERY convincing. They are made to appear like eBay so people will think that's where they are.

Notice that the actual site is mail.sehwa.biz and not an actual ebay domain. This is one of HUNDREDS of spoof sites set up to gather credit card numbers and ebay passwords and paypal accounts... This is a major problem. If you get an email saying your account is going to be cancelled, don't listen to it and don't follow the links. Instead, go to the site itself by entering the URL in the URL bar. http://www.ebay.com for ebay, http://www.paypal.com for paypal. Don't fall for these traps.

Thanks for the heads up. I've heard a lot about that stuff. I never open email from people I don't know, including ebay and paypal... well, because I know 99% they are spoofed sites trying to get my infromation. Plus, I get like a hundred emails saying both my ebay and paypal accounts will be closed... one year later both are still up an running :P

It's kind of sad people have nothing better to do but try and make an easy dollar. It'll catch up to them one day...

I should remove the "url" tags, I suppose... Sorry... It's just that darn autoformatting that I have taken for granted.
