Anime for Bible Study?

Anime for Bible Study?

I lead a Bible Study for Teenagers and am always looking for interesting stuff to discuss with my class. Lately we have been using Ephesians 6:10-18 to discuss spiritual war and we have been watching Star Wars Episode IV as an illustration. Before that we discussed all the religious symbols in Lord of the Rings and compared them to scriptures in the Bible. But now we are about to finish up our series on the Armor of God and I was wondering if any of you could think of a good Anime I could use for class discussion?

God Bless. :thumb:

Ohh. . . that's really tought, because I wouldn't feel safe suggesting anything that had even a hint of fanservice as discussion material for a Bible study. The only squeaky clean anime that I can think of was Millenium Actress. It was a great movie, but I'm not really thinking of any analogies that could be drawn at the moment.

Dunno though. You could check it out and see if anything jumps out at you. It really is an interesting movie, and, if it were just a movie discussion group, I'd recommend it strongly. On the spiritual parallel side, I'm sure many of our more seasoned anime fans can help you more than I, a mere novice, can. ;)

Hope you find something that will work for your group!
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. Yeah, you might wanna check the "Biblical themes in Trigun" threads that are floating around. I haven't gotten to see it, but there seems to be alot of food for thought in it.

We probably have a review for that one. . . I'll go check. *leaves*

i would also recommend rurouni kenshin, specifically the series 'cus the movies would prolly be too bloody to keep the focus on where it needs to be, but the series as a whole has a deep emphasis on repentance and turning away from the old nature and always being in a perpetual state of turning from the old, wicked ways, to the new, and more righteous ways of living, i will warn you though that in some parts towards the end of the series there are some buddhist things that pop up here and there, and the last bad guy in the series is very evil, but to give you an example of what i'm talking about,
the main character, named kenshin himura, was once an assassin on the side of those bringing about revolution in japan, well, he ended up killing someone that he didn't want to kill, and everafter he has repented from fighting others in such a way so that he would kill them, so instead he now uses a sword in which the blade is reversed so that no matter what technique he uses, he cannot kill unless he makes the conscious decision to kill and flips the sword around so that the blade faces the right way again
that is just an example of the kind of stuff is found in that series, hope this helps, later

Rurouni Kenshin and Paul the apostle?

Postby holysoldier5000 » Wed Jan 12, 2005 5:38 am

I have seen Rurouni Kenshin and I do agree that it would make an excellent example of repentance. Could it be put in comparison to Saul becoming Paul? Acts 9 and Galatians 1:10-24. What do you think?

I am dreadfully curious of how I could use Trigun for a bible study. I have never seen Trigun, so I know very little about it, but I am dreadful curious now. So what is the show about and what biblical context could I compare or contrast it to?

As for Sakura Wars and Millenium Actress, I have never seen them, so I am going to need a little more information on the series. Plus, what biblical context I could compare or contrast them to?

Thanks for all the help.

you read my mind, since kenshin was so good at his sword fighting it made sense for him to use his sword for the better of others as well as to save lives, in the same way, saul was a rabbi and because of this was very familiar with the law, and the prophets, so he knew exactly how to explain how Jesus is the Messiah using the law, and the prophets, and he also knew the significance of the Messiah's arrival according to scripture

Kenshin is also a man of strong moral character. Besides the obvious sword reference, references to the breast plate of righteousness and shield of faith are also naturals for Kenshin. If you haven't seen the series (first season at least, it's probably best for this) I'm not sure how you demonstrate that in a short class setting, so I guess I'm really no help at all.

I would highly recommend checking out Haibane Renmei for a future bible study. It is just 13 episodes, no fanservice, very thought-provoking. It could be useful in discussing sin, redemption, forgiveness, works vs. faith....

I don't want to go into much detail because of spoilers, but if you get a chance to watch the series, do so. I know of one other person who was so impressed by the series she put together a syllabus for several bible study sessions based on it.

I think Kenshin is a wonderful choice too, as already mentioned, is the strong themes of repentance, and Kenshin's Moral character. There are a couple of episodes which contain v. mild nudity or indicate so... (Karaou in the bath, or this one episode when Sanosuke is looking at some pictures, and someone makes a suggestion he's looking for something erotic)

In the late episodes, they actually adapt a story from the mid 1600s, an insurgence of "Christians" who wanted land for themselves by military takeover. Generally speaking it's an interesting piece of history too... Westerners were starting to arrive in Japan, and Christians and Catholics were welcome.

Catholics started establishing schools and medical buildings, and it seemed just hunky dory. They even helped the Japanese Shintoists fight the Buddhists. They overstepped religion and got very political, causing the Japanese Catholics to swear alegience to the Pope (Whom, is in his own way, a King fyi). They started obtaining special rights and pushing their political power, they started becoming destructive, Destroying Buddhist Temples, slaughtering innocents. It was repent or die. (Which I don't see endorsed Biblically),

Christians were branded in the same boat with Catholics (there is a separate name for Catholics and Christians, and great reason for it.) This Catholic rebellion had occcurred before in a regular repeating pattern in other countries. Eventually, the insurgence was cracked down on and all the Catholics and Christians were slaughtered, or deported, with the help of the Dutch. Because of that, the Dutch were allowed the right to visit Japan, under very strict regulations. Only 7 ships were allowed to Dock per year, on a specific Island, they were not allowed to Prech or have anything Christian with them. THeir bibles were to be locked up while in Japanese soil.

The regulations became tighter and tighter, the major turning point being the beginning of the Meijii Era. The revolution the Battousai Manslayer was in. He is actually a historical figure. This was when Western trade was atarting to be encouraged again, Samurai had begun losing their status and power, etc. The Capitol of Japan before the revolution was Kyoto, after, it became Tokyo

While watching the saga with the Christians' plight, I had mixed feelings over it, because of the Christian themes, mixed with something else I correctly identified as Catholic. There is an Evil man in it who is one of the Clergy, and I see him as an example of pure hippocracy.

I'm also familiar with Trigun. Wolfwood is definitely Catholic, heh, he has a "Portable Confessional". I find it funny, though Vash has the more Christian attitude, and is always yelling at Wolfwood over it.

Hope that helps!

that sounds about right to me, although wolfwood almost strikes me sometimes during the more comical parts as being almost like one of those televangelists trying to get your money, while on the other hand, here's vash who has his own cross to bear, and bears it as best he can, this would prolly be a good example of the difference between someone who preaches all the time, but doesn't live it, and someone who let's his/her actions do the talking

Thanks for all the help. It is really appreciated. Thanks SonicRose for the history on Japan. That was really cool. I didn’t know that.

I want to explain why I appreciate all your help, and maybe help someone else. I have been an assistant teen-bible-study leader for a couple years now, and it has been depressing. I have watched class after class drop in attendance from few to nothing. The teaching wasn’t working. We weren’t getting the kids fired up for the Lord and reading their bibles. (Which was our goal.) I watch one failed attempt after the other. I began to think that a successful bible study could not be done with teenagers. :bang:

But then I took a history class with the best history professor in the world. He used a method of devoting half of the class time to teaching and the other half to illustrating with movies. And I am not talking about the boring documentaries; I am talking about The Gladiator with Russell Crow, The Patriot with Mel Gibson, El Sid with Charlton Hesston, and many others. It was the funest class I had ever taken…but more importantly it was the one class I remember the most stuff from. See, this Professor had a way of not only making history fun; he could also give his class unforgettable examples. This gave me an idea. :brow:

Last year when I started as teacher of the teenage class (not the assistant) I was given a class that was suffering from its own boredom and on the verge of dissolving. The only reason the kids were there (the few of them) was because their parents made them come. That drastically changed. I began teaching the class using the same method my History Professor used but with Christian teaching, and attendance has gone through the roof! The kids are telling me that they hate to miss my class because it is so much fun! In fact they like to bring their friends to the class whenever they can! This class has become alive with excitement, but most importantly, God is using me to teach the truth of His word to these kids and they are learning. God is helping them become stronger Christians and I am blessed that God has used me in His work.

So Thanks for all the help, and if you guys have any questions or comments please keep’em coming. :thumb:

Concerning Millenium Actress-- I'd say the only "lesson" one could draw from it is that there are some things in our lives that are worth sacrificing everything else to go after. If you want a picture of total devotion, Millenium Actress is your movie.

It's the life story of an actress. An interesting twist to the story is that it's told through clips from her movies which range in setting from Medieval Japan to the Space age. The primary plot is the main character's desire to find this man who she met when she was young. This man gave her a key to "something special", and, if nothing else, she is determined to return it to him.

The only set back any such analogy: In the end, it sort of felt as if she was more chasing after the illusion of a thing and not the thing it's self. (She makes a statement to the effect of "Maybe it's just the chasing him that I really like.) Either way, I'm not sure how strong of a parallel could be drawn. IRent it and see what you think. I just thought I'd throw it in because it's one of the cleanest and most interesting movies I've seen in a while.

Millennium Actress could be a very good choice... while I agree with Mangafanatic about the main character's devotion to her quest, I think the movie asks the question of where "reality" truly lies -- there is a blurring of reality and the fantasy of cinema, yet the two are inextricably linked.

I'm reminded of a couple quotes -- Augustine's "Reality is that which abideth unchanged", and C.S. Lewis devil Screwtape, who advises a young demon to cloud a human's mind by saying, 'Keep him focused on Real Life -- and never let him ask what he means by Real.'

Millennium Actress plays a lot with reality, and in the end (especially the closing line), you have to ask, Was her quest real? Did she know it was real all along? Yet she devoted her entire life to finding the man who gave her "the most important thing in the world". It is, in a way, the retelling of the parable of the Pearl of Great Price -- the man who found it sold everything to obtain it.

Life is much about straining that which is Real (eternal) from that which is unreal (temporal), yet God wants us to work with the temporal without losing sight of the eternal. I think you could plumb the depths of this anime and come up with some interesting discussion topics.

Hum hum... (Translation: AngelSakura's Bishie Detectors (tm) picked up the word "Wolfwood" in this thread, determined it not a threat to her...ah, protection, and has but one thing to add... Nicholas Wolfwood's Japanese tile, "bokushi", indicates that he is, in fact, Protestant. There's a different title for Catholics. Yes, that's a lot for "hum hum" to mean, but that's how Angel is.)

Millennium Actress, The Great Divorce, Kenshin, and Paul!

Postby holysoldier5000 » Thu Jan 13, 2005 7:54 pm

I have not seen Millennium Actress but I have been doing some checking up on it…And I must say that it sounds very interesting. This concept of blurring the lines between reality and unreality reminds me of the book The Great Divorce by C.S.Lewis. If any of you haven’t read it, I would greatly recommend that you do. It is a fictional story about a man that travels to the edge of heaven and hell. It is a most thought provoking book that ask the question: [I]“If we were given a second chance in Eternity to choose between heaven and hell what would be our choice?â€

I'm probably coming in late for this topic, but I think X TV would be a good choice for this kind of thing. It has similar themes as the Matrix, and one of the main characters is a christian and I thought the episodes that show her past were pretty cool. It does have some violence and blood but not NEARLY as much as the movie or manga. Having seen the whole series, I'd say there isn't really anything worse than a PG-13 rating in it.

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00006D28L.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg (cover art of X tv volume 1)

X is a 25 episode TV series based on the CLAMP manga X/1999. Two teams of young adults with special powers are fighting over the fate of the earth. The six Dragons of Heaven, led by the dream seer Hinoto, fight to save the world, while the six Dragons of Earth, led by Hinoto's dream walking sister Kanoe, fight to destroy the world. Kamui is a young boy caught in the middle of the fight and must make a difficult choice, to become the 7th dragon of Heaven or Earth, to save the world or destroy it. X is the story of how he makes his decision and what that decision causes. It's pretty angsty and depressing most of the time, but te main characters are all really interesting. Even most of the Dragons of Earth get character development, and most of them aren't really villians at all. The show is 8 DVDs long but I think they just recently released a box set with all the discs for a low price.

there are some buddhist things that pop up here and there

It's very very sparse, and anyway it's based on Japan, especially Historical Japan, so to have buddhism never mentioned wouldn't be right because RK is historical fiction.

Wolf's Rain might be good...if it wasn't for homina (sp?) and the soap-needing mouths/jaws of Tsume and Hige.

According to some, Trigun might be good, but Rurouni Kenshin is very much recommended...there was a little tiny bit of fanservice in the first one *kaoru in the bath* but nothing explicit, and it wasn't shown to be fanservice-y...(Kenshin got locked up in a shack because he ran into the bathroom, thinking that Kaoru was commiting suicide... Poor Kenshin.)

OH OH OH, SAINT TAIL!!!!

The characters are Christians. ^_^ This is probably one of the tamest anime/manga out there.

And Hamtaro is also quite safe. Save the fortune-telling episode...but I doubt you can get much out of the adventures of hamsters.
