I've been a lacto-vegetarian for more than 4 years.... But no, I don't try to pressure people into following my eating habits.

I don't know if I speak for everyone else, but I think the sentiment isn't against vegans in general, just against people who see you eating meat and go "OMG! You go to hell 'cause you killed poor baby cow! I better than you, I no kill baby cow! You be vegan too! I beat you!" and beat you over the head with the guilt stick. :shady: If you feel that following a vegan diet is the right thing for you, and you're still keeping yourself healthy then there's nothing wrong with that. :)

YEAH!

Madam, you have just become one of my favorite members. Vegetarians kill as many animals as meat eaters, so they may as well eat 'em if they're going to kill 'em. That's how I see it, anyway.

I had a vegetarian friend once who preached the "You murder babby cow" gospel (to borrow Koko-chan's terminology ;) ). Whenever he tried to give me a hard time, I'd just look at him firmly and say "You know, you're right. We shouldn't eat meat, but I have a little problem with vegetarianism too. You see, what happens to all those microscopic organism that live on your vegetables? You KILL them when you wash those plants! You know what-- they deserve rights too! So I propose a new diet. We all eat peace and happiness and then die a slow, agonizing death. After that, the earth will be over run by roddent because the nature balance of the earth will be thrown off and everyone will be happy."

. . . I don't think he thought it was as funny as I did, but I got a huge kick out of the whole thing. ;)
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Actually, studies have shown that by harvesting plants, the plants can feel a nervous impulse of pain, much like when a animal is slaughtered.

I was listening to Glenn Beck once (a concerative talk show host) and some lady came on and said she was a Vegetarian as well as a animal rights activists and supports violence against non-vegetarians as well as those who experiment on animals. Well...Glenn pretty much owned her to say the least. She had a very weak base on her ideals, pretty much it was "I'm going with what's popular and the fad in the Vegetarian communtiy" ideal. She didn't quite understand what she followed.

So when Glenn said that thier was the study that plants can feel pain...he asked her with that new found information, would you stop eating plants? (she said previously she won't eat anything that is caused pain), he said "yes", she would not eat vegetables or fruit. Well...me and my dad had a laugh.

Those type of people I can't stand.

Hey. I thought I'd give you my reasons for being an ovolactovegetarian. As my sister (SirThinks2Much) said, I'm doing it for health reasons, and yes, it is easier to maintain than say, Atkins. I am not pressuring any of my friends to follow in my footsteps, and no where have I grasped anything that sounds like a New Age philosophy. I can eat meat, in spite of my diet. Just right now I don't want to. Vegetarians can eat meat once in a while; they just stay on the leaner side. Most of my friends (not the ones from church) accept the fact that I don't eat meat.

I find it etremely strange that her pastor would believe such a thing. Skynes here has a point. There's nothing wrong with your sister wanting to go on such a diet. I'm pratically vegetarian, not because I'm on some diet, but because it's just the way I am. There's nothing wrong with what she's doing.

I think what's being discussed here is more along the lines of perception rather than reality. Saying your a "vegetarian" conjures up images of vegans spouting holier than though platitudes of how we meat eaters are eating our cousins and such nonsense. I can understand some people’s apprehension.

There is nothing wrong with eating meat, but there is also nothing wrong with choosing not to do so. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that all of the other things that are somewhat common among the vegetarian crowd (new age thought, animals being equal to humans, etc) are the things that people are having a problem with and not the absence of meat from your diet, even though you yourself do not subscribe to these things.

Also, having gone to a Seventh-Day Adventist institution (although I myself am not Adventist), there are many Christians who are vegetarians as well -- in that denomination as in many others.

I'm an Adventist, and I was actually a vegetarian before going to that church. The basic rationale behind it is that our bodies as well as our minds must be in the best shape possible in order to serve God. We cut out high-fat meats like beef as well as foods considered Biblically unclean -- basically anything unhealthy, including foods that contain caffiene, alcohol, and tobacco. The teachings of Ellen G. White began the movement, and Adventist scientists have always been actively involved in the fields of nutrition, medicine, and health. (My church for example, is about 80% comprised of nurses, doctors, physical therapists, and psychiatrists -- they take it really seriously ^^; )

Even though vegetarianism is espoused by the church as an ideal lifestyle, I've never seen anything saying one cannot be an Adventist and eat meat every once and a while. In fact, many that I know are demi-vegetarians who include white meat in their diet (and almost everyone eats dairy products). Very few are strict vegans by choice.

Quite a lot of my acquaintances in medical school fell into this category (that should give it away to all Adventists the institution I'm talking about ^_^). It was funny, though, that they were very strict and also kept pepper and mustard out of the cafeteria as well -- but there was an abundance of fried foods at the grill, so it was debatable how much healthy eating there was to be had. :)

On the other hand, I will admit that I did learn to appreciate a lot of the healthier substitutes -- and I can eat soy and tofu now without a problem.

No pepper and mustard? Weird. o.o;

I'll have to ask some of my church members if their med schools are anything like that. Our church's potluck always has really great healthy foods....followed by a nice fattening dessert of some kind. XD But they always make sure there's no lard shortening in the ingredients!

I am not anti-vegitarianism... What bugs me is militant, evangelistic vegitarianism... When people put animals in the same category as humans, I want to slap them... If they are christians, I point out Paul's words. If they aren't christians, I just don't bother listening...

I do like to remind them, however, that humans are built omnivorous (sp?) We have the physical capacity to eat both plants and animals, and as far as I know, when animals have the ability to eat both, they generally do. Besides that, there are dangers in an entirely vegitarian lifestyle, a vegan lifestyle being worse... There are some things that herbivorous animals produce in their body that humans don't, but things that we need... Things you don't find in plants. Protein isn't the only nutrient to worry about.

BTW, I put millitant vegitarianism in the same category as millitant health nuts...

Look at your teeth. There are sharp ones for eating meat. We're fully able to and can if we want, but we don't have to. If you want to abstain from animal products for health or moral reasons, more power to ya, but don't make me do it, as I enjoy meat.

Personally I find the pastor's reaction more than a bit silly.Diet is no cause
for alarm that someone is going to go over board and go into the New
Age movement. Now if she brought a mistletoe home and it wasn't Christmas and started to burn candles to it and bowing and praying to it THAT would
be the time to get concerned. :eh:

But since she's only decided to forgo meat...Hmm...has your pastor read
the first couple chapters of DANIEL lately?
Remember Daniel and the others decided to forgo eating meat and a
vegeterian diet didn't hurt them,in fact it helped them.

So if it's anyone being unBiblical and a bit unChristian I would say it would be the pastor. He should just lighten up and allow your sister to continue her
veggie diet without criticism.
