Who here still roots for the good guys!

Postby heero yuy 95 » Thu Jan 06, 2005 7:59 pm

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person left who still roots for the good guys. I mean, don't get me wrong, there are some awsome villains out there
like Darth Vader, Seifer(FFVIII), Ramirez(skies of arcadia), and Khyron(robotech), but I have always had a soft spot for the noble, yet human heroes who still have there flaws but are fighting for a noble cause. Part of this may have to do with the fact that I have always had a thing for the good ole' "good-vs.-evil' type storylines. I don't really know why, this has just always appealled to me(guess that explains why I have been such a die-hard Star Wars fan all these years.) Another reason I find the hereos so appealing is that not only are they usually pretty cool, they still have their flaws and are easy to relate to. I am also a big Skies of arcadia fan and it is on my top list of favorites because I just dig it's Star Wars-esqu "noble heroes vs. big evil empire"-type storyline.
This is just my personal opinion and if you root for the bad guys that's cool.
'nuf said, so who's with me :P

You remind me of the Houston Astros commercial they play a lot down here.
"Root for the good guys! Biggio! Bagwell! Beltran! Clemens! The good guys are back in town!" etc.

Anyway, yeah I have a soft spot for the heroes. I tend to like the rough-edged guys over straight-up villains, but give me a naive, goody-two shoes hero any day.

I rarely support the villians and even if I did, they're either 1) anti heroes (Saitou Hajime) or 2) not really -bad- per se, just confused or hurting individiuals, who really didn't wanna do what they did in the first place (i.e. Soujirou, Nagi Naoe). ^__^

xD; I'm a fan of villains...Ramirez was freakin' AWESOME. I need to play more Skies of Arcadia to see more of him~

But there's nothing wrong with rooting for the good guys, too. ^.~ I'm actually a fan of those, too. I'll root for whoever has the more interesting personalities. xD Mwaha.

People who write below their abilities in order to crank out tons of books and make a buck. Especially Christian authors who do that. Outsiders judge us for it, and make fun of us for it, and it makes Jesus look bad. We of all artists on earth should be the most concerned with doing our best possible work at all times. We of all people should write with all our hearts, as if writing for the Lord and not for men.

Well, in some animes they make some of the bad guys have better morals than the good guys. >.> (Those are usaully the ones that I stop watching after the first couple eps, lol) But when people like bad guys better because they're 'stronger' or 'cooler'... I dunno... good personalities are what make characters appeal to me. ^^

Wow! Rock on! I'm glad there are those of us who still root for the good guys. But I have to admit, I have made a FEW exceptions. Villains have their moments, too. I mean, every great hero needs a totally awesome villain to face off with. But good guys all the way.

I never root for bad guys, it's just a shame that the bad guys are bad. *has confused herself*
In other words, I'm so with you!
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone
And so hold on when there is nothing left in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!' ...you'll be a Man, my son!

It is ironic to say this given my avatar, but I nearly always support the heros of a story over the villains. Those villains I do support I generally do so only in one aspect: character design, abilities, the good within them, etc. Unless the protagonists of the series are themselves villains, I always "root" for them, whatever good it does.

The rise of the anti-hero in our society is a sad thing, I believe. I do not refer to realistic protagonists with flaws, but of characters that are essentially as bad as or worse than those they conflict with. This was the motivation for a story I wrote some time ago, actually.

I tend to look at character and their development - I also think it takes a good villian to make a hero. If you truly hate the villian, you are desperate for the hero to win. I have always preferred the heroes, except for maybe a few lone holdouts, but I agree with most of you guys.

I usually root for the heroes... I root for villains when there is legitimate "stuff" to empathise with (The Boss or later Big Boss from Metal Gear, or perhaps Grey Fox, or Olga... Ok, MGS3 is still fresh in my mind)

I tend to prefer stories where the role of "hero" and "villain" are blurred... This is reflected in my own writing, or rather, I am trying to... I think I've been too obvious and 1 dimensional with my primary villain so far... And given him a really cheesy villainy line... I may rewrite that portion...

I generally root for the hero, but there are times I can't root for either the hero or the villain... That's when you hold out for the side characters (such as in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)

The villain I rooted for the most was the maverick replicant from Blade Runner. For the most part, however, I either root for the hero or pay more attention to the side characters.

I like the heroes to win, but I like stories where they have to fight hard to make it. Stories where they win easily make me root for the villains (I guess I like the underdog). Of course, heroes with values I don't support make me root for the villains. In Gundam Wing, the "heroes" were so vile, that I had pretty much started rooting for Lady Une until they *finally* had her start doing evil things [The Gundam Boys could be condemned as instigating it all though]. In Princess Mononoke, I had pretty much started rooting for Lady Eboshi after having the environmental propaganda shoved down my throat.

I really hate it when values I care about are made out to be villainous. I think one of the reasons I was so mad at the ending of the Grandia II game was that it made the people I felt should be heroic out to be villains (felt the same way about the novel "Shogun.") When this happens, I start rooting for the villains.

I perfer it when the hero has some sort of edge to him or her that makes
them more interesting.I also like villians who are sympathetic and do things
not because they're evil but because they have their own underlying reasons to do them.
Also the type of hero I perfer is one like Elektra or Xena that has a dark
past and used to be a villian but is now looking for some sort of Redemption.
