Danger Filled new Year

Postby Locke » Fri Dec 31, 2004 9:51 pm

I hate this time of the year..... when people shoot guns to "ring in" the New Year.
I live in a very dangerous part of LA so im familiar with shootings but what kind of idiot shoots a gun in the air ?

waste of ammo i say, and dangerous to aswell.

I just dont see the point of this madness, last year a little girl was killed by her dad from accidental discharge. HER DAD.

Not to rain on anybodys parade, but just be carefull and if you see someone doing something stupid like that, be a nice human and stop em please?

God Bless you all and have a safe night everyone

Well, just to let you guys know... just don't do a Neo. You're not in the Matrix and neither is that person holding the gun.

My mother was an ER nurse for several years, and she almost always worked New Year's Eve; every year she had at least 10 people if not more come in for gunshot wounds on their heads/shoulders because of someone shooting off at midnight. It's really sad, and especially since many of them were children. Bullets have to come down somewhere, you know.

Yes, sadly guns are not illegal. My cousin was shot when his home robbed, and another cousin was shot to death on his birthday. I live in the same city as Locke, and these things are as real to us as they are for many victims of guns.

Yes, sadly guns are not illegal.

I don't want to start a debate here (especially since they aren't allowed at this site) but making guns illegal wouldn't really solve things. Like my grandfather would say, locks only keep out honest people. People will still be shot, murdered and harmed due to gun violence whether they are legal or not. Unfortunately, it's not guns that are a problem to us, but ignorant humans. *kicks away soapbox*

Anyway, let's try not to make this into a gun-anti-gun debate, ok? If you want to talk further about it PM me.

Texas boy here... wonder what his stance is... :) kidding, kidding...
<.< II >.>

ANyways, be safe and don't do anything too stupid, a good idea indeed. Life is too short to cut it short by a really bad move.

Anyways, I remember a story about a guy who was hit by a drunk driver and had a metal pole go through the middle of his head. This guy survived and everything. Quite a remarkable story. Like Ashley's mom, my mother worked in the ER for a bit as well as in an ambulance. I've heard some really interesting stories and accidents that happen around the holidays. Though sadly, sometimes it unpreventable-- things happen. Anyways, y'all keep safe.

I feel sorry for the Dad who killed his daughter. He will take that guilt and sorrow to his grave. One moment of stupidity will translate to a lifetime of regret and anguish...

We opted from using guns and shot off fireworks.

Man, I'm so glad guns aren't as readily available over here! We had fireworks... Thats a much better alternative!

That's really sad...

Instead of banning guns, it might make more sense to restrict ammo to rubber bullets,
I know that they're used for riots, so they would definitely not be as lethal.

Yes, but the problem is that rubber bullets are just as lethal as normal ones unless you know how to use them correctly.

Personally, I don't think banning guns will do anything but hurt. Thugs will have guns whether you ban them or not, so you're only hurting citizens by preventing them from protecting themselves.

Enough of the gun debate. The idea of trashing constitutional rights because of fear is silly. Please, do not banter the point further, as this thread will just end up locked. Thanks.

Sorry to hear that Locke. But it *could* be worse.

When I lived in the Philippines, New Years' was an especially dangerous holiday. Guns (as far as I know) aren't as available to the general public as they are in the US, but nevertheless, there were many holiday-related fatalities due to fireworks. It wasn't unusual to hear of scores of people killed or mutilated due to firecrackers and the like (and they'd often show the bloody results on the TV). I'm not sure what the laws are about fireworks, but whatever they are, they're not seriously enforced.

You mean here or there?
I know here, the laws are community based. I live in a "no fireworks" county, just north of a "fireworks OK" county. There is some tension between the two law-enforcement communities during the 4th of July period.

The county I live in does allow fireworks, which makes for some friction on July 4th (old upstairs neighbours got drunk a couple years ago and were setting bottle rockets off in the parking lot *near parked cars* ... dummies).
