The Christmas Shoes

Postby Mr. SmartyPants » Tue Dec 21, 2004 5:52 pm

has anybody heard this song? The guy is talking about a young poor boy, trying to buy his mother shoes for christmas.

it's incredibly touching, listen to the radio sometime, it is incredibly awesome ^^ It's by Newsong

lyrics if you want to read them
It was almost Christmas time, there I stood in another line
Tryin' to buy that last gift or two, not really in the Christmas mood
Standing right in front of me was a little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing 'round like little boys do
And in his hands he held a pair of shoes

His clothes were worn and old, he was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn't believe what I heard him say

Chorus:
Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight

He counted pennies for what seemed like years
Then the cashier said, "Son, there's not enough here"
He searched his pockets frantically
Then he turned and he looked at me
He said Mama made Christmas good at our house
Though most years she just did without
Tell me Sir, what am I going to do,
Somehow I've got to buy her these Christmas shoes

So I laid the money down, I just had to help him out
I'll never forget the look on his face when he said
Mama's gonna look so great

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight

Bridge:
I knew I'd caught a glimpse of heaven's love
As he thanked me and ran out
I knew that God had sent that little boy
To remind me just what Christmas is all about

edit: should this be in jam session?

The lyrics are nice...it has a good message...

But I just don't like the song. It's not my type of music, y'know?

In fact, it drives me NUTS when I hear it on the radio, because I can't stand it. Again, I just don't like the music. The message is good.

He wants them to learn to walk and must therefore take away His hand; and if only the will to walk is really there, He is pleased even with their stumbles.

A splitting brow forced by the thorns
His face is writhing with the pain yet it's comforting to me

Oooh... man, I have heard this song and it has a beautiful message. But I have to agree with Kae - the style kills it. Maybe Autio A or somebody like that should do a remix of it. ^^ (have you heard their remix of The Little Drummer Boy? That's freakin awesome!)

What sort of music is it? Reading the lyrics it has a great message. But I've never heard the song.

Um, they're a really popular worship group in Australia.
Amazon has some song samples, just scroll down:

That is such a sad song! I cry every single time, however what's good bout it is that it is played on secular radio stations during this time.

I don't know. I think I'm too cynical, but parts of this song nag at me.

How does this kid know his mother’s shoe size?
How did he get to the store?
How much money did he have? Was it even close to the cost of the shoes?
Did the kid pay what he could and the guy pay the rest, or did he front the whole cost of the shoes?

It just sounds suspicious to me – like a scam.

However, even if it was a scam, I think I’d rather be cheated then to refuse to help someone who genuinely needed it. That’s still a good point to take away from the song.

I about cried first time I heard this song. And I would have if my dad hasn't been there. He would have laughed at me.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I heard that they made a movie called The Christmas Shoes and it was on TV last year. I didn't watch it but I think my mom did and I believe she told me that it made her cry. I'm surprised no one mentioned that they made a movie based on that song.
