About That One Song

Postby Mizumi-Kun » Mon Dec 13, 2004 7:52 pm

I've heard it argued that Linkin Park's Breaking the Habit is a suicide song. I don't think that's the case. What do the rest of you think?

My only reason for putting this up is because I know that Chester Bennington, the lyric writer of Linkin Park, is a Christian, and I doubt writing a song about suicide was his true intent.

For those of you not familiar with the song, I'll post the lyrics.

Memories consume like opening the wound
I'm picking me apart again
You all assume, I'm safe here in my room
Unless I try to start again

I don't want to be the one the battles always choose
'Cause inside I realize that I'm the one confused

I don't know what's worth fighting for
Or why I have to scream
I don't know why I instigate
And say what I don't mean
I don't know how I got this way
I know it's not alright
So I'm breaking the habit
I'm breaking the habit
Tonight...

Clutching my cure, I tightly lock the door
I try to catch my breath again
I hurt much more, than any time before
I have no options left again

I don't want to be the one the battles always choose
'Cause inside I realize that I'm the one confused

I don't know what's worth fighting for
Or why I have to scream
I don't know why I instigate
And say what I don't mean
I don't know how I got this way
I'll never be alright
So I'm breaking the habit
I'm breaking the habit
Tonight…

I'll paint it on the walls
'Cause I'm the one at fault
I'll never fight again
And this is how it ends

I don't know what's worth fighting for
Or why I have to scream
But now I have some clarity
To show you what I mean
I don't know how I got this way
I'll never be alright
So I'm breaking the habit
I'm breaking the habit
I'm breaking the habit
Tonight...

I really don't understand why everyone says LPs music is depressing. I have never found that to be the case at all. And no, I don't feel this song is about suicide...if anything its about letting go of destructive habbits in our lives...

I haven't heard that Chester is a Christian, but I don't think this song is about suicide. I agree with Shatterheart's interpretation. It just seems to be able letting go of bad habits, whatever they may be.

That's exactly what I thought it was about, but my sister is always screaming about it being a suicide song...

not every song that talks about wounds has to be about suicide...and not all wounds are physical. I agree with the others about it being a song about changing.

In total agreement. Hey, I've never gotten to tell you, but your "Gackt Still Can't Dance" siggy is the best!

I think the song is about breaking a habit, Or making money.

I think it's the latter of the two.
"Relax, turn around, and take my hand." Tool
"Heir Kommt Die Sonne." Rammestein
"Now the world is gone, I'm just one. Oh please God help me." Metallica
"Are You Ready?!?" KoRn
"All and all your just another brick in the wall." Pink Floyd.
The downfall of society will be society itself.
Rap is the malignant tumor of the music industry.

I'm going to have to agree with the people who said that it's a song about changing things in our lives. I think that's what most of their songs are about really. Sort of off topic, but the video for "Breaking the Habit" is really cool.

Me too! I think it's about breaking habbits... Not killing yourself in order to stop doing them. I think most of Linkin Park's songs are good. (with a few exceptions) I haven't yet bothered to listen to their collaboration with Jay Z though. :bang:

Is Chester really a Christian? That would be awesome, but I'm not too quick to believe that. Where did you get this from?

I agree as well. When I first heard this song, I was like, "Wow, a secular song with some value!" I never thought of it as suicide. And even stranger, I heard on tv on some christian channel (I have Skyangel) that LP was christian. Not just Chester. Though I don't think this is the case at all. But it could be possible about Chester being christian. Though somehow I don't think so.
