what do you object to the most in anime?

Postby Tenshi no Ai » Wed Nov 24, 2004 4:13 pm

I keep getting de ja vu on this topic... I know that I did a similar one on another board... but whatever close it if it's been done before (and/or it gets out of hand).

Anyhow, poll time again! What do you find in anime that would repel you? For me it's the sexual content, which in many series is quite unecessary really. Fan service can be quite annoying! Of course you can say the same thing about "fan service for girls" which is usually either a shounen-ai couple, or whatever and yeah.

With everything else: violence, swearing, other religions, usually don't bother me too much... unless the religion is "Christian" related and goes all weird :/

I attend a public high school, so language doesn't bother me much. Violence doesn't get to me either, and I have relatives who are Buhddist, so the other religions stuff doesn't but me. Sexual content/fanservice, though....ugh. >>; And I'm a bit emotionally unstable, so I stay away from anime that seem like they could emotionally scar me (sounds silly, but it's something I have to keep in check for my own wellbeing)

Me I'd have to say violence. Yeah I know most people think that sexual content is worse... but in reality which is better? Somthing natural that procreates the human race (although it is overcrowded already :eh: ) or somthing that involves people getting hurt. I personally don't object to either of them being shown, as both of them are innate in human nature but if I had to choose...

None of the above. What I object to the most is the sameness of many of the plots (including shameless ripoffs), and the lack of diversity in artistic style. Having to continually guess at a character's gender gets pretty old too.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

AMEN.

Anyway, the only thing that really bothers me isn't on the poll. Nothing bothers me worse than watching a decent series, and all of a sudden there's two dudes with a romantic interest in each other.

Makes me wanna puke. Fortunately, I can't remember any series I've seen that had any of that...but I'm sure there's been...oh yeah. El-Hazard. That was the only thing I found repulsive about the series. Fortunately, it didn't go too in depth regarding it...

This applies to ANY form of entertainment. Sexual content.

The only reason I object it in anime/manga is because I just happen to be more interested in anime/manga anyway and therefore, it greatly affects me.

Second to this, would be misrepresentation of Christianity.

For me, the most objectionable is either sexual stuff or the occult. Unfortunately, most anime is loaded with that stuff...

I object most to sexual stuff. Nothing can slam a good anime like nudety. Fanservice is pretty bad to. :mutter:

The problem is that 99% of sexual activity in anime is outside marriage. (Not to mention the fact that it isn't for procration...)

Anything that relates to Shoujo-ai, Shonen-ai, Yaoi, or Yuri. I really don't like such elements that show homosexuality in a positive light (ie. Gravitation and Fake.)

Fanservice. Fanservice is one of the major reasons I have no anime or manga.

I think the thing is that a lot of violence is kinda slapstick, or the characters don't get so badly hurt, or it's not as graphically depicted, or such things. I can't stand gore in real life, though.

Language...I don't use it, and it irritates me, but I hear it all over campus, so I guess I've kind of gotten inured.

I also like fantasy, so that's usually how I view the magic and stuff in anime. I'd just prefer it be full out fantasy-style magic, or maybe a skewed view of some religion besides Christianity. It upsets me when that happens.

Fanservice and other sexual content, especially if it's unecessary, I think just irritates me the most. Generally, it's just gratuitous and doesn't help along the storyline at all. Things like violence may be vital to the storyline, but blantant, explicit content rarely does that at all.

Of course, none of these things are specific to anime. Plenty of movies/books/tv shows have the same kind of material.

I don't mind violence if it isn't extremely gory. I think that it is pretty much ok for me as long as it shows the negative side affects. If it is to gory and needless it bothers me. But I've never been affected my it much.

Sexual content is the main negative in anime for me. It is a big struggle for most of us guys. We should remember to keep purity for us CAA guys in our prayers...

Bad language doesn't affect me to much. It does get me really annoyed though. I gotta be careful when I watch stuff with bad language because it finds ways to creep into your mind.

Bad religions doesn't bother me to much. It is pretty much all they know. There is very very little evangilism out there. And I just chalk most of the bad christianity up to ignorance...Not all mind you, but most. I don't like it when it gets into to much uccult though.

All the above: Most disturbing would have to be the occult, and sexual content.

Great storytelling requires it not.

Kudos to thatdude. The sexual content in anime added to how susceptible alot of us guys are to sexual content robs us of enjoying some great stories. Ugh. How sad it is. Just wait till Heaven, then we won't have any bad stuff to deal with and we will be basking in the love of our Lord. :-)

It's difficult for me to answer because nothing really offends me in anime. If the violence is totally pointless and just there for the sake of having gratious violence that's not good. Same with the cursing. You could say the same for all of these things. If it's pointless and doesn't add anything to the story it's bad.

The real reason everyone has voted for what they have is because that is the one that is used without purpose most of all. A violent rape can be horrifying and if it's used well in the anime then I'd have no problems with it. What repels me the most in anime? Nothing. I think everything has it's place and unfortunutly erotic content is used pointlessly more than the other things.
Absence is to love as wind is to a flame. It extinguishes the little, it ignites the great.

Life is a test. It is only a test. Had this been real life you would have have been instructed where to go and what to do.

Sexual content bugs me the most I haven't run into it yet but I have come across some yaoi/yuri fans. Language I can deal with and I really don't mind violence. I almost picked the other religions thing tho.

Sexual content is mostly the reason that some anime repels me. For example: unaturally oversized breasts :P

Nudity or Yaoi/Yuri *runs away screaming*
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I agree to a point.

Actually, for me it really depends of the degree of the explicit content. Like how much is too much?

Violence vs. sexual content
ex: Nija Scroll (violent) vs. Ceres (pre-marital sex)
~I would perfer Ceres

Ex 2: Akira vs any hentai title
~I would choose Akira well... because of obvious reason.

Ex 3: Love hina vs. Ceres
~I would perfer Ceres b/c it has less explicit content. Also the story is so much better :P

It really depends on how much of that specific content is in it.

If i could i would pick all of those except for violence, unless its really gory...i don't mind mild language.....i picked sexual content though because its really pointless. They don't need to depict that kind of thing for ANY reason, i don't care what kind of justification they give it, its wrong...and for me if i even see that kind of thing it tears me up inside...thats why i usually stick to mecha like the Gundam series...usually you have nothing to worry about...
