Amazing Race Season 2 - Checkpoint 1

Postby Godly Paladin » Mon Nov 15, 2004 4:15 pm

All right! Welcome to the first checkpoint of the second Amazing Race!

To dissipate any confusion, I want to point out that you aren't just limited to the 6:00pm-7:00pm (central) hour block to put up your answer. This checkpoint will go on until all but one racer has checked in or it's clear that more than one will never check in. Take all the time you need, but just make sure you aren't the last one in!

And remember: you have to post one fact. Please keep this stuff academic, people. Acceptable facts include:

-Population
-Area
-Largest Cities
-Major Religion

Something geographical and relevant to modern times. (e.g. if the country is the USA, don't put up that the US fought a war against Britain. We don't want history - we want modern facts.) If you get your facts from an online source, (which is the easiest way considering the format of this race) put a link so we can all check it if needed.

Without further ado, let's get started!

*****************************

AND THE FIRST CHECKPOINT IS>>>

NORTH KOREA!!!

N. Korea borders the Yellow Sea.

Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. North Korea has had only two rulers. KIM Chong-il, the current president, has ruled North Korea since his father and the country's founder, president KIM Il-song, died in 1994.

I'm popping into this race just to do a few MC things.

Mangafanatic: That fact has already been listed. You need to pick another one... Better hurry.

Termyt: That fact is borderline as far as legality goes. That was more History related than geography. It's acceptable, but I just thought I'd put this out here again.

AHH!!! FIND A NEW FACT FAST ZiP!!! That's a history fact! It has to be geography!

I've consulted a neutral arbitrator (who has experience in these matters) and his determination is that ZiP's fact was close to meeting the criteria, but...close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

While it contains a geographical reference, the way it is written makes it primarily a historical fact.

I'm glad to see you people are on your toes here!

(Osaka, I guess you're really after revenge now, eh? Maybe you can challenge termyt to a Space Invaders duel or something...)
