Paranoia Agent

Region 1 DVD 1 for Paranoia Agent is now available. I watched the first four episodes of it, and wanted to post some spoiler-free warnings.

First, using MPAA standards, this is definitely an "R" rated series. It is not suitable for young children, and the recommended age category on the DVD itself is "16 and up". There is not much fanservice proper, but there is a lot of frank, street-wise talk and visuals, including nudity; the dub has strong language. There is violence (although less graphic than Texhnolyze or even Mononoke Hime... so far....).

The story itself is intriguing, and I can't say I've seen an Opening Title Sequence quite like this one before. But some of the subject matter will turn people off (especially parents); I would not let my 14-year-old daughter watch this.

I do not think this (yet) attains a "Do Not Discuss" CAA status, but it is definitely a "use caution before watching" series.

I try to go in to anime series cold, so I didn't want to show much of the plot. However, for those interested, here is a brief description of what I took away from the series so far:
Tsukiko Sagi is a young character designer who is trying to repeat her success with her previous design, Maromi. Under a great deal of pressure, she suddenly falls victim to an elementary school kid who violently assaults her. The police, her coworkers, and even the public at large at first doubt whether the attack was legitimate, thinking it a ruse to earn her sympathy (and buy her some time for her next design). This event triggers a series of other, increasingly bizarre and apparently interrelated events that have profound effects on the lives of many other people. It becomes even more bizarre as Maromi, the cute pink dog, appears to take on life and becomes Tsukiko's alter ego...
